Delaware State Police Investigating Single Vehicle Fatal Crash- Bridgeville

Bridgeville- Delaware State Police are investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash on Seashore Highway (SR 18) east of Oak Road.

On September 5, 2020, at approximately 3:36 p.m., a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta operated by a 34-year-old male from Milford, was traveling eastbound on Seashore Highway (SR 18), attempting to pass a slower vehicle directly in front of him. As the operator changed into the westbound lane to start passing the vehicle, he observed another vehicle traveling westbound. To avoid colliding with the other vehicle in the westbound lane, the operator swerved back into the eastbound lane, nearly striking the vehicle he intended to pass. As a result, the operator failed to maintain his lane and exited the south edge of the roadway, where he rolled over multiple times before coming to rest, upright in a cornfield.

The operator of the vehicle was not properly restrained and was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased shortly after arriving. Identification is pending notification of next to kin.

Seashore Highway was closed for approximately 3 hours during the investigation and clean- up.

Laurel Man Arrested on Felony Criminal Charges Following Road Rage Incident- Laurel

Laurel- Delaware State Police have arrested 45-year-old Eric Bailey of Laurel on felony criminal charges following a road rage incident.

On September 4, 2020, at approximately 7:30 p.m., troopers responded to Tracy Circle and Hastings Drive in Laurel for a suspicious vehicle in the roadway with subjects fighting. Through investigative measures, troopers determined Bailey and the 31-year-old male victim from Salisbury, MD, were operating their vehicles through Laurel. When they arrived at Tracey Circle and Hastings Drive, Bailey and the victim exited their cars, and a physical altercation ensued. During the incident, Bailey stabbed the victim with a knife in his lower extremity. After the altercation, the victim and passenger not involved with the incident left the scene and responded to an area hospital for treatment.

Bailey responded to Troop 5 where he was arrested and charged with the following crimes:

  • Assault 1st Degree (Felony)
  • Possession of a Deadly Weapon during the Commission of a Felony (Felony)

Bailey was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court #3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $40,000 secured bond.

*UPDATE* Delaware State Police Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Crash- Laurel

Laurel- Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred on September 4, 2020, at approximately 7:44 p.m., northbound on Sussex Highway north of County Seat Highway, Laurel.

A 2013 Ford Flex operated by a 33-year-old female from Greenwood, was traveling northbound on Sussex Highway in the left travel lane north of County Seat Highway. A 63-year-old female from Cliffside Park, NJ, was on foot attempting to cross Sussex Highway in a westerly direction, directly in the path of the Ford Flex.  The operator was unable to avoid the pedestrian and the front right bumper struck her within the left travel lane. After the impact, the operator of the vehicle came to rest on the northbound shoulder of Sussex Highway.

The operator of the vehicle was not injured during the collision. The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The northbound lanes of Sussex Highway were closed for approximately three(3) hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

Identification is pending notification of next to kin.

Laurel – Delaware State Police are on the scene of a serious motor vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 7:45 p.m., Friday, September 4, 2020, on Sussex Highway in the area of County Seat Highway. 

As a result of the crash, Sussex Highway northbound in the area of County Seat Highway is closed. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes of travel. The road closure is anticipated to be lengthy, with no estimated time for a re-opening.

Delaware State Police Investigating Attempted Burglary-Dover

Dover- Delaware State Police are investigating an attempted burglary in progress that occurred on September 4, 2020.

At approximately 12:35 a.m., a 35-year-old Dover woman was in her residence in the 3000 block of Forest Avenue, Dover, when she observed an unknown suspect attempting to gain entry into the residence.  The suspect was armed with an unknown type of long gun and attempting to kick in the  door located on the east side of the residence.  The suspect fled on foot after being advised by the resident inside of the home that she was armed.

The suspect was described as a black male approximately 5’6″-5’8″, weighing approximately 160-170 lbs., wearing a face covering, dark colored shirt and pants.

No one was injured during this incident and there is no photograph available.

*UPDATE-Name Released* Troopers Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Accident- New Castle

New Castle– Delaware State Police have identified the name of the of the individual who died in a crash on September 2, 2020, on Christiana Road (Route 273) entering the right turn lane for the ramp to Delaware State Route 1 northbound, as 36-year-old Agustin Garcia Maldonado of New Castle, DE.  Maldonado was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.

Back to School Backpack Deployment

This week the Delaware State Police, with the support of the Delaware State Troopers Association (DSTA), and in conjunction with the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement (NOBLE), New Castle County Police Department, Delaware State Police Credit Union, Ballard’s Reading Buddies, and Keene Elementary School over 500 backpacks filled with school supplies were distributed to children in need.

Thank you to all who donated and the volunteers who gave their time to make this year’s Backpack Deployment such a huge success!

Troopers Investigating Shots Fired Incident-Smyrna

Smyrna- The Delaware State Police are investigating a shots fired incident that occurred last evening.

The incident occurred on September 3, 2020, at approximately 11:24 p.m., when Troopers responded to a residence on East Redbrook Place, Smyrna, in reference to a shots fired complaint.  Upon arrival, it was learned that two occupants were in the residence, a 70-year-old male and a 33 year-old male, who were seated in the living room when a loud noise was heard. Further discovery revealed that the first floor of the residence had been struck by multiple bullets. There were no injuries as a result of this incident.

There is no suspect information at this time.
