Troopers Investigate a Shots Fired Incident that Damaged a Commercial Business- Laurel

LAUREL, DE- Delaware State Police are investigating a shots fired incident that damaged a commercial business in Laurel.

On November 2, 2021, at approximately 7:36 a.m., employees of Todd’s Income Tax located at 11516 Commercial Lane arrived at work to discover the building had been damaged by gunshots. Troopers investigating the incident discovered several shell casings on Commercial Lane and three bullet holes in the building. The incident occurred after the business closed at approximately 5:00 p.m. on Monday and before employees returned to work Tuesday morning. There was no one in the building when the incident occurred.

This case remains an active investigation and is being investigated by the Delaware State Police Troop 4 Criminal Investigations Unit. *UPDATE #2- Victims Identified* State Troopers Investigating Fatal Crash- Elsmere

ELSMERE, DE- Delaware State Police have identified the individuals who died in a fatal motor vehicle collision on October 29, 2021, as Toni Waltman, 74, of Wilmington, and her husband, Hayes Waltman, 75, of Wilmington.

At approximately 10:19 a.m., a black 2020 Ford Edge operated by Toni Waltman was traveling northbound in the left lane on Centerville Road, just north of Liberty Road. A white 2011 Toyota Rav4 operated by a 60-year-old Wilmington man was traveling southbound on Centerville Road towards Liberty Road. In the area where the cars were traveling, a CSX railroad crossing had the lights activated to warn of a train approaching. The operator of the Rav4 was attempting to cross the railroad tracks before the train crossed over the tracks. At the same time, T. Waltman began making a U-Turn before the railroad crossing. As a result, the front of the Rav4 collided with the right side of the Ford Edge in the left lane of southbound Centerville Road.

T. Waltman was transported to an area hospital where she was pronounced deceased. Also in the Ford was her husband, Hayes Waltman who was seated in the front passenger seat. He was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The 60-year-old Toyota Rav4 driver was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

This collision remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit. Investigators ask anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has a dashcam/video of the incident to please contact Master Corporal John Forester by calling 302-365-8485. *Traffic Advisory* Troopers Investigating Serious Accident- Cheswold

Cheswold, DE – Delaware State Police are on scene of a serious motor vehicle crash that occurred on North DuPont Hwy. at Messina Hill Road.

As a result of the crash, both northbound and southbound North DuPont Hwy. is closed with emergency response vehicles on scene. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes of travel. The road closure is anticipated to be lengthy, with no estimated time for a re-opening.

Troopers Investigate Robbery of Delivery Truck Driver- Dover

Dover, DE- Delaware State Police investigate the robbery of a delivery truck driver that occurred early Monday morning.

On November 1, 2021, at approximately 3:37 a.m., troopers responded to Rodney Village Shopping Center located at 1632 S. Governors Avenue for a robbery. The investigation determined a 37-year-old Wilmington man pulled his delivery truck to the alley at the rear of the shopping center to complete a bread delivery to Porto Bella Pizzeria. As he parked by the rear door of the business, he was approached at the driver’s door by a male suspect holding a handgun. The male pointed the gun at the victim and motioned him to exit the truck. When the victim exited, the suspect entered the driver’s seat and rummaged through the delivery truck. He then exited the truck with the victim’s personal property and fled on foot northbound through the alleyway. The victim was not injured during the incident.

The suspect is described as a black male with a thin build. He was wearing dark-colored clothing and wearing a dark-colored mask.

 This incident is being investigated by the Delaware State Police Criminal Investigations Unit. Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact Det. Delaware State Police Investigate Shooting- Georgetown

Georgetown, DE- Delaware State Police are investigating a shooting incident that occurred Sunday night in the Georgetown area.

On October 31, 2021, at approximately 9:07 p.m., troopers responded to Dupont Blvd (US 113) and Hardscrabble Road for an individual with a gunshot wound in the leg. The investigation determined a 22-year-old Millsboro man and a 25-year-old Millsboro woman were driving in the area of the 20000 block of Asketum Branch Road when a confrontation ensued between the 22-year-old male and individuals in another vehicle. During the altercation, an unknown suspect shot multiple rounds, striking the male once in the leg. All individuals then fled the area. At US 113 and Hardscrabble Road, the victim contacted a paramedic unit stopped at the intersection. He was transported to an area hospital with a non-life-threatening injury. 

Troopers responded to the location of the shooting, and a search of the crime scene was conducted. Evidence was located in the roadway related to the shooting. 

There are no suspect photographs or information available.

Ocean ViewJason R. Meredith, 38 of Hebron, MD was extradited back to Delaware on Friday October 29, 2021. Meredith was arraigned on the charges of Murder 2nd, two counts of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, and Reckless Endangering 1st via videophone with JP2 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $226,000.00 cash only bond.

An autopsy of Cheryl Beckett-Brown was performed and determined the cause and manner of death as a homicide by gunshot wound.

Milford Man Arrested for Attempted Burglary- Milford

Milford, DE- Delaware State Police arrested Jonathan Bishop Richard Harvey, 18, of Milford, early Sunday morning for attempted burglary and related charges.

On October 31, 2021, at approximately 1:20 a.m., troopers were dispatched to the 7000 block of Union Church Road for reports of an individual attempting to break into a residence. The investigation determined a black male wearing UFC gloves was standing on the front porch and tried kicking in the front door. When the male was unsuccessful in gaining entry, he left the property and went to the residence next door, where he entered the back of a work van parked in the driveway. When troopers arrived, they located the individual, later identified as Jonathan Harvey, seated on the ground inside the van wearing UFC-style gloves. Harvey failed to comply with multiple commands to exit the van and resisted arrest. Once taken into custody, troopers located on Harvey a key to the victims’ shed and van. Harvey was transported to Delaware State Police Troop 5, where he was charged with the following crimes:

  • Attempted Burglary First Degree (Felony)
  • Criminal Trespass Second Degree
  • Criminal Mischief
  • Theft Under $1,500
  • Resisting Arrest

Harvey was arraigned in the Justice of the Peace Court and released on his own recognizance.

Delaware State Police Investigating Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision- New Castle

New Castle- Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred Sunday Night on South DuPont Highway (Route 13) at the intersection to Red Lion Road.

On Sunday, October 31, 2021, at approximately 6:22 p.m., a 2000 Peterbilt tractor trailer was stopped northbound Route 13 in the right lane at the intersection of Red Lion Road for a red traffic signal. At the time, a 1997 Jeep Wrangler was traveling northbound Route 13 in the right lane approaching the tractor trailer. When the traffic signal transitioned to green, the tractor trailer began to slowly move forward. For unknown reasons, the Jeep failed to reduce its speed and the front the Jeep struck the rear of the trailer. As a result of the collision, the Jeep traveled out of control off the right shoulder and into the grassy area. The Jeep overturned on its passenger side momentarily before returning to all four wheels.

The operator and sole occupant of the Jeep, a 53-year-old male of Middletown, DE, was not properly restrained and was partially ejected from his vehicle. The victim was pronounced deceased at the collision scene. Identification of the victim is pending notification to the next of kin.

The operator of the Peterbilt tractor trailer was not injured.

Northbound Route 13 was closed for approximately 4 hours while the crash was being investigated and the roadway cleared.
