New Castle (19720) – Delaware State Police continue to investigate a serious motor vehicle crash in which a pedestrian was struck.
The crash occurred at approximately 1:11 p.m. this afternoon, Friday, June 30, 2017, as a 30-old-male from Wilmington was on the southbound shoulder of South DuPont Highway (US13) just north of Old State Road. The pedestrian was in an apparent physical altercation with another unidentified male when the 30-year-old male reportedly stepped in the roadway in an attempt to gain position against the subject. A 2013 Buick LaCrosse being operated by a 39-year-old Wilmington woman was southbound on US13 and attempted to swerve to miss the pedestrian, but was unable, and stuck him with the front bumper. The LaCrosse came to a controlled stop on the right shoulder immediately after the impact.
After the collision, the subject that was fighting with the pedestrian fled the area on foot and was not located. The subject has only been described as a black male.
The 30-year-old pedestrian was airlifted from the scene by Delaware State Police Aviation to Christiana Medical Center (CMC) where he is listed in critical condition.
The 39-year-old female driver was transported by EMS to CMC with non-life-threatening injuries and released.
This crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit. Traffic in the area was impacted for approximately two and a half hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
