Update: Troopers Investigating Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash-East of Newport

Newport, De. – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into a fatal crash that occurred east of Newport earlier today.

The incident occurred around 2:56 p.m.Thursday, December 15, 2016, as Edward Kowalski, 80 of Wilmington, was operating a 2011 Ford Escape eastbound on East Newport Pike (Rt. 4) approaching Fallon Avenue. For unknown reasons the Ford Escape veered right onto the shoulder and struck the curb on the south side of Rt. 4 and then drove off the roadway. The vehicle continued in a southeast direction traveling across a sidewalk and struck a tree with the front end of the vehicle and came to rest at the point of impact.

Edward Kowalski, the operator of the vehicle and sole occupant, was properly restrained. He was transported to the Christiana Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the collision. It is unknown if the collision occurred was because of a medical event.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident. East Newport Road in the area of the crash was closed in both directions for approximately 45 minutes while the crash was investigated and cleared.

Troopers Investigate Single Vehicle Crash into Building, Hockessin

Hockessin, DE – Troopers are investigating a crash in which an operator drove his vehicle into a building this morning.

The incident occurred around 8:23 a.m., Tuesday, December 13, 2016 as Duane D. Werb, 66 of Hockessin, was operating a 2005 Porsche Boxster in the parking lot of Reynold’s Cleaners located at 7460 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin.  As the Porsche pulled into a parking space Werb accelerated over the sidewalk and struck the building with its front bumper. The Porche continued through the building and came to a stop with the vehicle halfway through the wall of the business.

Duane D. Werb, the driver of the Porsche Boxster, did not recognize he pushed his accelerator pedal instead of his brake. There were no injuries in the collision. He was cited for Careless driving.

Troopers Investigating a Subject Struck by a Train

Wilmington, DE – Troopers are currently on the scene of a crash involving a subject who was killed after being struck by an Amtrak train south east of Banning Park, Wilmington.

Preliminary investigation reveals the incident occurred around 8:04 p.m. this evening when a southbound Amtrak commuter train struck a subject that was on the tracks. The subject, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.  The conductor was able to bring the train to a stop after the collision.

The investigation into this incident is in the early stages and more information may be released as it becomes available.

Troopers Investigate Gas Station Robbery – New Castle

New Castle, DE- Delaware State Police are currently investigating the robbery of a New Castle area Shell gas station that occurred last night.

The initial investigation has determined that the incident occurred at approximately 9:03 p.m., Sunday, December 11, 2016, as a male suspect entered the Shell gas station/foot mart located at 299 Christiana Road, New Castle. The suspect confronted a male employee who was standing behind the sales counter. He then demanded money from the cash register. The employee complied with the suspect’s demands and turned over an undisclosed amount of cash to him. The suspect then exited the business and fled westbound. There were no injuries.

The suspect was described as a black male. He was 5’10”-6’00” tall, weighed 160-200 lbs., and was last seen wearing dark clothing and had a mask covering his face. There is no further physical or clothing description available. No video surveillance footage is available at this time.

**Update #1** State Police Investigating Fatal Crash Southeast of Laurel

Laurel – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash on Gordy Road near Wootten Road involving two vehicles that occurred earlier this morning.

The incident occurred around 7:50 a.m. Monday December 12, 2016 as a 35-year-old female from Willards, Maryland was operating a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck westbound on Gordy Road, west of the intersection of Wootten Road, negotiating a moderate left curve. A 64-year-old female from Delmar, Delaware was operating a 2005 Ford Explorer eastbound on Gordy Road, approaching the Silverado.  As the pick-up was traveling through the curve, the operator lost control and began to rotate counterclockwise, leaving the westbound travel lane and crossing into the eastbound lane. The operator of the Explorer, in an attempt to avoid a collision, swerved to the right, however the front center collided with the right side of the truck.  After the impact, the Chevrolet pick-up continued rotating counterclockwise and came to stop in a ditch. The Ford Explorer rotated slightly clockwise and came to a stop in the same ditch, just west of the truck.

The 35-year old female and her 36-year-old male passenger in the pick-up truck, were removed from the scene by EMS and transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital.  The female was admitted for non-life-threatening injuries.  The male was pronounced dead a short time later at the hospital.

The 64-year-old female operator of the SUV was transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital where she was treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries.

All names are being withheld at this time pending notification of next of kin.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident.  Charges may be forthcoming on the operator of the Chevrolet Silverado.  Gordy Road between Old Stage Road and Wootten Road was closed for approximately three and a half hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

Detectives Investigating a Home Invasion Just West of Milton

Milton – The Delaware State Police are investigating a home invasion that occurred just outside the limits of Milton.

The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. Friday December 9, 2016 when a 49-year-old female was sitting in the living room of her house located in the 14000 block of Russell Street with her one month old grandson.  The female heard some noise just outside her bedroom window and when she went to investigate, she observed a subject attempting to gain entry by tampering with the air conditioner unit. The female victim called 9-1-1 to report the incident and when she returned to the living room, two suspects forcefully entered through the front door and confronted her.  They demanded her money and when she informed them she didn’t know where any money was located, one of the suspects pulled out a gun and pointed it at her.  She then turned over an undisclosed amount of cash before the two fled the house and entered an unknown make and model passenger car.  The victim and her grandson were uninjured in the incident.

The first suspect was described as a male, 5’08” – 5’10” tall, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, and a black mask over his face (No further physical or clothing description available).  Armed with unknown type handgun.

The second suspect was described as a male, 6’00” – 6’02” tall, wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, and a black mask over his face (No further physical or clothing description available).
