Delaware – The Delaware State Police have recently released a new recruiting video and are continuing to accept applications for the 92nd Delaware State Police Recruit Class.  The closing date for the applications will be Friday, April 21, 2017 at 4:00 p.m.  Testing for this class, which is slated for an undetermined date in 2018, will occur in mid May.

Milford – The Delaware State Police are currently on the scene of a fatal crash north of Milford.

The incident occurred around 11:18 a.m. Thursday March 23, 2017 on southbound Bay Road (US113/SR1) and involves a tractor trailer and a motorcycle.  The motorcyclist has been pronounced dead at the scene.

Bay Road southbound is currently closed at exit 79 (Thompsonville Road).  Commuters are advised to seek alternate routes of travel.

Further details will be released upon the conclusion of the investigation.

Glasgow- The Delaware State Police and the Middletown Police Department have arrested a pair of men following a joint investigation into a series of armed robberies which had been occurring in both jurisdictions.

On Friday, March 17, 2017, Troopers arrested Brandon C. Dixon, 29, of Middletown, and Darius K. Johns, 26, of Wilmington, immediately after they committed the armed robbery of the Estectica Y Peluqueria Salon, located at 2105 W. Newport Pike, Wilmington. The robbery occurred at approximately 8:16 p.m. as both suspects entered the business while displaying firearms. They then confronted several employees and customers and demanded money from them. The victims complied with the suspect’s demands and turned over an undisclosed amount of money to them. There were no injuries. The suspects then exited the business and were seen entering a Saturn Ion which was parked in the area. The vehicle then fled in an eastbound direction on West Newport Pike. The Ion was subsequently stopped a short distance away by responding Troopers and both suspects were taken into custody. Evidence linking the two men to the robbery was located inside of the car.

Brandon Dixon and Darius Johns were both transported to Troop 2, where after further investigation, detectives from the Delaware State Police and the Middletown Police Department were able to link the pair to a string of robberies (listed below) which had been occurring in the Middletown and Wilmington area.

Brandon Dixon was arrested by the Delaware State Police and charged with five counts of Robbery 1st degree, four counts of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, four counts of Possession of a Firearm by a Person Convicted of a Previous Felony, four counts of Wearing a Disguise During the Commission of a Felony, two counts of Conspiracy 2nd Degree, two counts of Attempted Robbery 2nd Degree, and four counts of Aggravated Menacing. He was arraigned at JP Court 11 and committed to the Howard Young Correctional Institution in default of $382,000.00 cash bail.

Darius Johns was arrested by the Delaware State Police and charged with three counts of Robbery 1st Degree, two counts of Attempted Robbery 1st Degree, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, four counts of Aggravated Menacing, Wearing a Disguise During the Commission of a Felony, Possession of a Weapon by a Person Convicted of a Previous Violent Felony, and Conspiracy 2nd Degree. He was arraigned at JP Court 11 and committed to the Howard Young Correctional Institution in default of $180,000.00 cash bail.

Middletown- Delaware State Police are investigating a threat that was called into Everett Meredith Middle School this morning.

The incident occurred around 7:39 a.m. Wednesday, March 22, 2017, when a phone call was received at the main office of Everett Meredith Middle School located at 505 S. Broad Street. The male caller stated that there was a bomb in the school and that it would blow if it was not located. Students and staff were evacuated from the school as troopers and K9 units immediately responded and conducted a search. Nothing of a suspicious nature was located and students were allowed to return to the school at approximately 9:40 a.m. to resume normal activities.

This incident remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police at this time. If anyone has any information in reference to this  incident, they are asked to contact Troop 2 Youth Aid Division at 302-834-2620. Dover – The Delaware State Police have arrested two Dover residents after a brief pursuit led to the discovery of illegal drugs.

The incident occurred around 5:03 p.m. Tuesday March 21, 2017 as a trooper on patrol in the area of the Dover Toll Plaza observed a 2017 black Chevrolet Impala traveling southbound on Korean War Veteran’s Memorial Highway (SR1) in an erratic manner.  When the trooper pulled behind the Impala and attempted to perform a traffic stop, the car aggressively increased its speed and exited SR1 southbound onto westbound Puncheon Run.  The Chevrolet continued to pass other vehicles on the roadway and upon approaching South DuPont Highway (US13), failed to negotiate the right turn to travel southbound.  The vehicle exited the west side of the highway and crashed into three parked vehicles for sale in the parking lot of Hertrich Nissan of Dover, located at 1378 South DuPont Highway.

Once stopped, the operator, who was later identified as Adam D. Scott, 43 of Dover, attempted to flee the area on foot, but was quickly apprehended after being Tasered by the pursuing trooper.  A passenger, who was identified as Kiauna R. Collins, 37 of Dover, remained at the scene and was taken into custody without incident.  A search of the Chevy Impala revealed two plastic bags containing 126.07 grams of crack cocaine.

Adam Scott and Kiauna Collins were transported to Troop 3 in Camden where Scott was charged with Possession with Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance (Crack Cocaine), Possession of a Controlled Substance (Crack Cocaine), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Disregarding a Police Officer Signal, Conspiracy 2nd, Resisting Arrest, Driving While Suspended or Revoked, and other traffic related charges.  Scott was also wanted on eight capiases out of various courts in Kent County.  He was arraigned at JP2 and committed to James T. Vaughn Correctional Center on $43,504.00 secured bond.

Kiauna Collins was charged with Possession with Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance (Crack Cocaine), Possession of a Controlled Substance (Crack Cocaine), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Hindering Prosecution, and Conspiracy 2nd.  She also had two capiases out of Kent County courts.  She was arraigned at JP2 and committed to Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution on $42,500.00 secured bond.

Wilmington (19808)- Delaware State Police are currently investigating an armed robbery that occurred in the parking lot of a Wilmington area shopping center early yesterday afternoon.

The initial investigation has determined that the incident happened at approximately 12:37 p.m. on Sunday, March 19, 2017, as a male victim was walking through the parking lot of the Apollo Shopping Center, located at 3615 Kirkwood Highway. It was at this time that the victim was summoned by a male suspect who was standing on the side of the Colortyme Store. As the victim approached, the suspect displayed an unknown make and model gun and demanded money from him. The victim complied with the suspect’s demands and turned over an undisclosed amount of cash to him. The suspect then ran through the parking lot and was last seen entering a black unknown make and model  vehicle, which was occupied by two other male subjects. The vehicle then exited the parking lot and fled in a westbound direction on Kirkwood Highway and then northbound on Duncan Road. There were no injuries.

The suspect was described as a white male. He was 20-35 years of age, tall, had a large build, and was last seen wearing a light colored shirt. There is no further physical or clothing description available.

New Castle – Delaware State Police have arrested two Wilmington men and charged them in connection with a series of burglaries that have occurred over the course of the last month and a half.

On Friday, March 17, 2017, Delaware State Police Burglary Unit Detectives arrested Ferdell F. Harvey, 57, and Timothy M. Reason Jr., 32, both of Wilmington, without incident during a traffic stop following a burglary they were observed committing at the Speedway gas station, located at 506 N. Dupont Hwy, New Castle . Detectives had developed Harvey and Reason as suspects in a series of burglaries that had occurred at area businesses during the month of February and March of this year.  During the burglaries, Harvey and Reason would forcefully enter the establishments and remove cartons of cigarettes before fleeing the area. In all, more than $23,000.00 worth of cigarettes and tobacco products were stolen.

Young Correctional Institution in default of $105,800.00 cash bail (Harvey) and $87,700.00 cash bail (Reason).

Newark – Michael S. Berwick, 26 of New Castle, was taken into custody, Saturday March 18, 2017 during a traffic stop conducted by New Castle County Police Department.  Berwick was charged by state police with two counts of Robbery 1st and two counts of Wearing a Disguise During the Commission of a Felony.  He was arraigned at JP11 and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $70,000.00 cash bail.

Ocean View – The Delaware State Police are currently investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred late Saturday night near Ocean View.

Preliminary investigation reveals the incident occurred around 10:13 p.m. Saturday March 18, 2017 when an officer, employed with the Ocean View Police Department, became involved in a vehicle pursuit while assisting Worcester County Sheriff’s Office (Maryland).  The officer and Deputies were pursuing an Infinity SUV as it drove down Burbage Road and crossed over Windmill Drive onto Pine Grove Lane, which is a dead end road.  The operator of the SUV then came to a stop at the end of the road and accelerated backwards at a high speed directly into the front of the fully marked Ocean View Police Officer’s patrol vehicle, pushing it off the roadway.  The Infiniti continued backing at a high rate of speed almost striking a fully marked Deputy Sheriff’s vehicle and smashed into a mailbox where it momentarily stopped.  The SUV then drove forward and entered into an empty residential lot where it turned around and began driving toward a Sheriff Deputy that was standing outside of his vehicle in the driveway of the lot.  The Ocean View officer was able to exit his patrol vehicle and run up to where the Deputy was standing as the SUV accelerated toward the two law enforcement officers who were yelling commands to stop.  Both the officer and the Deputy fired multiple rounds at the Infinity before the operator came to a stop in a private driveway in the 36000 block of Pine Grove Lane.

The officer and Deputies removed the suspect, who is described as a 31-year-old Hurlock, Maryland man, from the SUV and rendered first aid until the arrival of EMS.  The suspect was then transported to an area hospital where he is currently admitted in serious condition.  His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The officer was also transported to an area hospital by EMS where he was treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries he sustained in the collision.

The Deputy Sheriff was uninjured in the incident.

The investigation into this incident is being conducted by the Delaware State Police Homicide Unit and is in its early stages. More information will be released as it becomes available.
