Lewes- The Delaware State Police are currently investigating a motor vehicle crash involving one vehicle that struck a tree on Camp Arrowhead Road and Yoshino Drive, Lewes that occurred around 12:02 p.m. this afternoon.  At this time it is unknown how many people are injured and the extent of their injuries.

The roads have currently closed in the area of the crash.  Commuters are advised to use caution in the area of the crash as crews are continuing to investigate the collision.

The Delaware State Police have joined other Delaware law enforcement agencies in carrying the overdose reversal drug, Naloxone, also known as Narcan.

Troopers will begin to carry nasally-administered Naloxone kits on patrol for use in treating subjects suspected of suffering from heroin or other opiate overdoses.

In conjunction with the Delaware Office of Emergency Medical Services, the Delaware State Police implemented a training curriculum and developed Divisional Policy authorizing and monitoring the administration of Naloxone by Troopers.

“As first responders on patrol, Troopers often are the first to arrive on the scene of medical emergencies.” said Sergeant Paul G. Shavack, Trooper Medic Commander and Delaware State Police Naloxone Program Coordinator. “Deployment of Naloxone kits in conjunction with EMS response has proven instrumental in saving the lives of those suffering from heroin or other opioid overdoses and increases the level of service that Troopers provide to our community.”

Bear- Delaware State Police have obtained a warrant charging a New Jersey man with murder in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred in a Bear area parking lot in March.

On Tuesday, May 23, 2017, Delaware State Police detectives obtained an arrest warrant charging Elder Saavedra, 24, of Swedesboro, NJ with Murder 1^st Degree in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred on Sunday, March 26, 2017 in the parking lot of 2000 Firedancer Lane, Bear. Saavedra is currently incarcerated in Pennsylvania due to a prior detainer issued by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Saavedra will be formerly arrested upon his extradition from Pennsylvania.

The investigation began after troopers were called in reference to a male pedestrian, later identified as Lester Mateo, 24, of Pennsville, NJ, who had been struck by a vehicle. During the investigation troopers learned that an altercation had occurred inside the El Nuevo Rodeo Restaurant involving several individuals. Following the altercation Lester Mateo responded to a vehicle in the parking lot of the business. He then drove the car a short distance in the parking lot before getting out of it. It was then that Elder Saavedra entered the car and proceeded to run into Mateo, pinning him against a second vehicle which was parked in the lot. Saavedra then exited the vehicle and fled the parking lot on foot.

Lester Mateo was removed from the scene and transported to the Christiana Medical Center where he was subsequently pronounced dead. His body was turned over to the Division of Forensic Sciences where his death was ruled a homicide. Through further investigation detectives were subsequently able to identify Elder Saavedra as the suspect.

Townsend- Delaware State Police are asking for the public’s assistance in locating an ATV that was stolen from a self storage facility earlier this month.

The investigation began on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 after troopers were called to the Storage Sense, located at 893 Noxontown Road, Townsend, for the report of the theft of a 2005 Yamaha 660 ATV (pictured) from one of the storage units. After reviewing surveillance footage, troopers were able to identify the vehicle believed to have been used in the theft (pictured).

Wilmington (19810)- The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating a three vehicle crash involving a Delaware State Trooper that occurred last night north of Wilmington.

The initial investigation has determined that the crash occurred at approximately 8:46 p.m. last night, Thursday, May 25, 2017, as a 46 year old Delaware State Trooper was operating a fully marked 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe and was traveling in a westbound direction on Silverside Road approaching the intersection of Benton Court. The trooper, who was not responding to a complaint and did not have the emergency equipment of his vehicle activated, failed to observe a 1996 Buick Lesabre stopped in the westbound lane of Silverside Road, just west of Benton Court, with its left turn signal activated. The front of the Tahoe then struck the rear of the Lesabre, which was being operated by a 16 year old Wilmington male. The force of the collision caused the Lesabre to travel into the eastbound lane of Silverside Road where its front then struck the front of a 2012 Infiniti G37, which was being operated by a 73 year old Wilmington female. All three vehicles came to rest in the roadway.

The operator of the Buick Lesabre, as well as a 53 year old female passenger, were trapped in the car until they could be extricated by responding emergency personnel. They were treated at the scene by New Castle County Paramedics before being transported by ambulance to the Christiana Medical Center, where they were treated for their non-life threatening injuries. There were no other injuries.

All operators and passengers were properly restrained at the time of the crash. Alcohol use is not being considered as a factor in the crash.

This crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit. Both the eastbound and westbound lanes of Silverside Road were closed for a period of time as the crash was investigated and cleared.

New Castle (19720) – The Delaware State Police, the National Transportation Safety Board, and the Federal Aviation Administration, continue to investigate a helicopter crash which has claimed the life of a New Jersey man that occured late this morning in New Castle.

The investigation thus far has determined that the crash occurred at approximately 11:55 a.m. this morning, Thursday, May 25, 2017, as a 2006 Airbus EC-135P2 helicopter, which was being operated by Michael R. Murphy, 37, of Franklinville, NJ, crashed into a drainage ditch located in the rear of the United States Post Office facility located at 147 Quigley Boulevard. Upon impact the helicopter, which is owned by Penn Star, the air transportation service for the University of Pennsylvania Health System, then became engulfed in flames. Responding fire services personnel from the Goodwill Volunteer Fire Company and neighboring volunteer fire companies arrived at the scene and were able to extinguish the flames. Michael Murphy, who was employed by Metro Aviation, was the sole occupant of the helicopter. He was declared dead at the scene. His body was turned over to the Delaware Division of Forensic Sciences where an autopsy will be performed. There were no other injuries. Damage to a shed and several parked vehicles on the property was sustained due to flying debris and flames.

Upon speaking to aviation officials, it was learned that Michael Murphy had flown from the Atlantic City Airport and was conducting “approach training” in the area of the New Castle County Airport.

The investigation into the cause of this crash is continuing at this time. Further Information will be released as the investigation dictates.

New Castle (19720)- Delaware State Police are currently at the scene of a helicopter crash that occurred late this morning in New Castle.

The preliminary investigation has determined that the incident occurred at approximately 11:55 a.m. this morning as a privately owned helicopter occupied by one individual, crashed in a grassy area located in the rear of the United Stated Post Office located in the 200 block of Quigley Boulevard. As a result of the crash, the occupant of the helicopter has been declared dead at the scene. There were no other injuries. A shed on the property as well as several vehicles sustained minor damage.

The Delaware State Police, The National Transportation Safety Board, and the Federal Aviation Administration are currently on scene conducting the investigation which is in its early stages.

More information will be released to the media at a press conference to be held later today. The location and time of the press conference have yet to be determined.

Millsboro – State Police are requesting assistance in locating Brian A. McCabe, 26 of Millsboro, who is wanted for three counts of Burglary, two counts of Possession of Burglar Tools, three counts of Theft, and two counts of Criminal Mischief.  He is also wanted by Millsboro Police Department, Georgetown Police Department, and Sussex County courts on warrants and capiases.

McCabe is wanted by troopers in connection with two separate incidents that occurred around the end of April and beginning of May for entering seasonal residences in the 26000 block of Autumn Road and removing various items including electronics.
