New Castle –  Delaware State Police are identifying the pedestrian who was struck and killed in a collision that occurred at approximately 5:37 a.m., Thursday, April 12, 2018, on U.S. Route 40 (Pulaski Highway) westbound, east of Appleby Road, New Castle, as Charles Walters, 37, of Bear.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Cpl/3 J. Forester at 302-365-8485.

Troopers Arrest Milton Man for 6th Offense DUI

Rehoboth Beach- The Delaware State Police have arrested a Milton man after he was found to be operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol for the 6th time.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:09 a.m. on Friday, April 13, 2018 as a Trooper observed a maroon Dodge Stratus traveling in the wrong lane of travel on Warrington Road.  A traffic stop was conducted and the Trooper made contact with the operator, 36-year-old Jermaine D. Willis.  Upon contact with Willis, an odor of alcohol was detected and a DUI investigation ensued.  Willis was taken into custody and transported back to Troop 7.  A computer check revealed that Willis had five previous DUI convictions, making this his 6th arrest.

Jermaine Willis was charged with 6th Offense Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, Driving While Suspended or Revoked, Driving on the Wrong Side of the Roadway, Failure to Remain Within a Single Lane, and Failure to Have Insurance Identification. He was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $7,502.00 cash bond.

*Update* Troopers Investigating Serious Pedestrian Hit and Run Crash-Seaford

The Delaware State Police are investigating a serious hit and run crash that has left a 9-year-old child in critical condition last evening.

Preliminary investigation indicates the crash occurred on Thursday, April 12, 2018 at approximately 5:05 p.m. as a white, 2002 Mazda Protégé was traveling northbound on German Road, approximately .7 miles south of Old Furnace Road. The 9-year-old child that resides on the east side of German Road had just finished checking the mailbox and was walking back to her residence when she was struck by the Mazda.  The Mazda continued northbound, fleeing the scene. 

The 9-year-old sustained major injuries and was removed from the scene by the Delaware State Police helicopter.  She was flown to A.I. Dupont Children’s Hospital where she is listed in critical conditions.

Through investigative measures, Troopers located the operator of the Mazda, a 21-year-old Seaford man.  Charges have not been filed at this time.

German Road between Concord Pond Road and Old Furnace Road was closed for approximately 4 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

*Update* Robbery Suspect Arrested Second Still At Large

Lewes- The Delaware State Police have arrested a suspect in connection with a robbery while the second suspect still remains at large.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at approximately 1:18 p.m. when Troopers were dispatched to the 20000 block of Wil King Road for a report of an assault.  Upon arrival, Troopers made contact with a 67-year-old resident who advised that he engaged in an argument with one of his tenants, 25-year-old John Schaefer of Georgetown.  The argument led to Schaefer physically assaulting the victim.  While the victim was on the ground, Schaefer took his wallet and removed cash.  He furthermore removed the victim’s cell phone, eye glasses and keys.  Also present during this incident was 27-year-old Amber Hoopes of Lewes.  Both Schaefer and Hoopes fled the residence in the victim’s black Cadillac Escalade bearing DE registration 22607. The victim was transported to a local area hospital where he is being treated for his injuries.

On Thursday, April 12, 2018 at approximately 12:03 p.m., Troopers saw Schaefer on Coastal Highway in the area of the Rehoboth Beach Canal Bridge and took him into custody without incident.  It was discovered that Schaefer had drug paraphernalia in his possession.  He was transported back to Troop 7 where he was charged with Robbery First Degree, Criminal Mischief, Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Malicious Interference with Emergency Communication, Conspiracy Second Degree, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.  Schaefer was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $64,300.00 secured bond.

*Update #2* Suspect Arrested After Filing a False Report

New Castle (19720)- The Delaware State Police have arrested a suspect in connection with filing a false report.

Koshaunna Mack, 28-year-old of Newark reported an incident to the police on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at approximately 6:38 p.m. Mack stated that she was at the Shell Gas Station, located at 299 Christiana Road, where she had just finished fueling her vehicle up at the gas pumps.  She indicated that as she proceeded to retrieve her wallet off the trunk of her vehicle where she had placed it, a subject was simultaneously reaching for it.  Mack stated that she was able to grab her wallet and enter her vehicle, locking the doors.  Mack reported that the subject then approached the drivers side door, displayed a handgun, and began banging on the window.

Through further investigations, it was determined that the information Mack reported to the police was false.

On Thursday, April 12, 2018, Mack turned herself in at Troop 2 and was charged with Filing a False Report.  She was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court 2 and released on $1,000.00 unsecured bond.

*Traffic Advisory* Pedestrian Struck Has Road Closed- Seaford

Capture

Seaford- Delaware State Police are currently on scene of a crash involving a pedestrian.  The crash occurred at approximately 5:05 p.m., Thursday, April 12, 2018, which has German Road between Old Furnace and Concord Pond Road closed.

Motorists should expect delays in the area and are asked to seek alternate routes of travel.

Troopers Arrest Suspect for Strong Armed Robbery-North Wilmington

Wilmington (19802) – Delaware State Police have arrested a Wilmington woman for a strong armed robbery, that took place at a North Wilmington grocery store, yesterday afternoon.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:44 p.m., Wednesday, April 11, 2018, at the Food Lion, located at 4401 Governor Printz Boulevard, Wilmington.

A 70 year old Wilmington woman, had just taken possession of an undisclosed amount of cash, after completing a wire transfer transaction at a teller window inside the Food Lion. Immediately after taking possession of the money, a suspect, later identified as Jessica M. Vandegrift, 32, of Wilmington, grabbed the money from the victim’s grasp and fled the store on foot.

Vandegrift was detained in the parking lot by bystanders before being taken in to custody by responding Troopers. The victim’s money was recovered and she was not injured as a result of the incident.

Vandegrift was transported to Troop 1 where she arrested and charged with one count of Robbery 1st Degree. She was then arraigned in the New Castle County Court of Common Pleas before being released on $20,000.00 unsecured bond.

*UPDATE* Troopers Investigating Fatal Crash Involving Pedestrian Rt. 40- New Castle

40 at Appleby

New Castle – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate a fatal motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian, that took place on U.S. Route 40 between Wilton Boulevard and Appleby Road, this morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 5:37 a.m., Thursday, April 12, 2018, on U.S. Route 40 (Pulaski Highway) westbound, east of Appleby Road, New Castle. A 37 year old Bear man, who was wearing all dark, non-reflective clothing and not carrying a flashlight, was walking in the right turn lane of westbound Rt. 40 just east of Appleby Road. A 2010 Nissan Maxima, being driven by a 32 year old New Castle man was traveling Rt. 40 westbound, and then changed into the right turn lane at which time he struck the male pedestrian, who he did not see. The victim was thrown on to the hood of the vehicle and then back to the ground before coming to rest in a grassy area off the roadway. The Nissan came to a controlled stop and remained at the scene.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by responding EMS, impairment on his behalf is unknown at this time. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The operator of the Nissan was properly restrained at the time of the collision and was not injured. Impairment is not a factor on his behalf. Two rear seat passengers in the Nissan, a 1 year old female and 4 year old female, were properly restrained in car seats and also were not injured.

Troopers Seek Public’s Assistance in Identifying Robbery Suspect-Lewes

Lewes–  The Delaware State Police are investigating the armed robbery of a motel that occurred Saturday evening, and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the above pictured suspect who is wanted in connection.

The incident occurred on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at approximately 10:26 p.m. when Troopers were dispatched to the Red Mill Inn located at 16218 Coastal Highway for a reported robbery.  Upon arrival, Troopers made contact with an employee who indicated that he was in the rear storage area located behind the front office when he was confronted by a subject.  The suspect displayed a handgun and a physical struggle ensued in which the victim was stuck with a blunt force object.  The Suspect then held the victim at gunpoint and ordered him to retrieve money from the cash register.  The victim complied with the demands and turned over an undisclosed amount of cash prior to the suspect fleeing the scene.  The victim sustained minor injuries and refused medical treatment at the time.

The suspect was described as black male, approximately 5’09”-5’10” tall, 160-180 lbs., wearing all dark colored clothing.
