Troopers Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Crash-Lincoln

Capture1

Lincoln-The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash that occurred last evening involving a pedestrian.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at approximately 11:17 p.m., as a 2009 Pontiac Vibe, operated by a 21-year-old female from Lincoln, was traveling southbound on Marshall Street (CR 225) just north of Johnson Road (CR 207). An 85-year-old male pedestrian from Lincoln was on foot walking in the roadway. As a result, the operator of the Vibe failed to see the pedestrian in the roadway causing the front bumper of her vehicle to impact the pedestrian within the southbound lane of travel.  The impact forced the pedestrian onto the hood and windshield of the vehicle before coming to rest in the southbound travel lane. The operator of the Vibe came to a controlled stop and remained on scene.

The 85-year-old pedestrian was wearing dark clothing none of which was reflective, and was not carrying a light.  He was removed from the scene by EMS and transported to the Milford Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.  His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.  Alcohol does not appear to be a factor on his behalf.

Troopers Safety Message for Memorial Day Weekend

IMG_2616

Dover- The Delaware State Police will be out in full force patrolling the roadways this weekend to ensure that everyone is driving with due care and offering assistance to motorists in need. The Delaware State Police Mounted Patrol Unit will also be assisting the Dewey Beach Police Department with proactive patrols, and the Delaware State Police Maritime Unit’s “Marine One” will be operating on Delaware’s waterways to ensure boater safety and security.

“As we take time this Memorial Day Weekend to celebrate the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, we must not forget the dangers that can arise from traveling on our roadways,” said Sergeant Richard Bratz, Director of Public Information for the Delaware State Police. “The Delaware State Police would like to wish everyone an enjoyable and safe Memorial Day Weekend!”

Troopers intend to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries on our highways during this “official” start of the summer season. Troopers will be focusing on distracted driving, motorists not wearing seat belts, unrestrained children in vehicles, and any aggressive driving behaviors such as speeding, following too close, and especially, driving under the influence.

By following these easy steps, a driver can enjoy a safe holiday weekend travel without jeopardizing their life or the lives of others who may be on the road:

  • Ensure all occupants are properly restrained
  • Plan a safe way home before the festivities begin
  • Before drinking, please designate a sober driver and give that person your keys
  • If you’re impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation so you are sure to get home safely
  • If you see a drunk or aggressive driver on the road, immediately contact 911 as soon as safely possible.
  • If you know someone who is about to drive while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely.

Troopers Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Crash-Dewey Beach

Dewey Beach – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian that has claimed the life of a Maryland man.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:31 a.m., Friday, May 25, 2018 on Coastal Highway (SR1) northbound at the intersection of Keybox Road south of Dewey Beach. A 2012 Hyundai Accent, operated by a 56 year old Lewes man was traveling northbound on Coastal Highway (SR 1) in the right lane approaching the intersection of Keybox Road. A pedestrian, 22 of Maryland, was walking southbound along the northbound shoulder of Coastal Highway in the area of the intersection. For unknown reasons, the pedestrian entered into the northbound travel lane of Coastal Highway directly into the path of the vehicle. The operator of the Hyundai Accent was unable to avoid the pedestrian and struck him with the right front bumper within the right travel lane. After the collision, the pedestrian came to rest on the northbound shoulder of Coastal Highway. The vehicle continued northbound for a short distance before coming to a controlled stop on the northbound shoulder of Coastal Highway north of the pedestrian.

The roadway was dark and the pedestrian was not in a marked crosswalk or carrying a light at the time of the collision. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by responding EMS. Alcohol and unsafe speed are not factors on behalf of the driver. Alcohol does appear to be a contributing factor on behalf of the pedestrian.

The operator of the Hyundai Accent was properly restrained and sustained no injuries as a result of the crash.

The northbound lanes of Coastal Highway were closed between Dewey Beach and the Inlet Bridge for approximately four hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Master Corporal K. Argo at 302-644-5020. Information may also be provided by calling Delaware crime stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333 or via the internet at http://www.delaware.crimestoppersweb.com
