Troopers Arrest Wilmington Man for Liquor Store Burglary Attempt

Wilmington (19804) – Delaware State Police have arrested Barry R. Cline, 30, of Wilmington on multiple charges, after the unsuccessful burglary attempt of a local liquor store.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:47 a.m., Tuesday, April 24, 2018, at Boxwood Liquors, located at 630 S. Maryland Avenue, Wilmington, when a Trooper, who was on routine patrol in the area, observed a suspicious subject standing in front of the business. When the subject, who was later identified as Cline, observed the Trooper approaching, he attempted to flee on foot, but was taken in to custody without incident.

Upon checking the area, the Trooper discovered a cinder block laying on the sidewalk in front of the business and also observed that the glass, front entrance door had been shattered. Through further investigative measures Cline was able to be positively linked to the burglary attempt.

Cline was transported to Delaware State Police Troop 6, where he was arrested and formally charged with Attempted Burglary 3rd Degree, Criminal Mischief Under $1000.00 and Possession of Burglary Tools. He was then arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court #11 and released on $6100.00 unsecured bail.

Troopers Arrest Smyrna Man on Multiple Drug Charges

Magnolia- The Delaware State Police assisted the Smyrna Police Department in executing a search warrant which led to the discovery of drugs.

The Delaware State Police were informed by the Smyrna Police Department that a suspect, identified as 19-year-old Kwamai Johnson of Smyrna was arrested in connection with a stolen firearm.  On Tuesday April 24, 2018, members of the Smyrna Police Department, Kent County Drug Unit (KDU), Kent County Property Crimes Unit, and the Delaware State Police Special Operations Response Team (S.O.R.T), executed a search warrant at a residence located in the 100 block of Woodville Drive, Magnolia.

During a search of the residence, a Smith and Wesson rifle, 3 loaded rifle magazines with numerous rifle ammunition, 4,147 blue wax bags of suspected Heroin (approximately 29.029 grams), approximately 276.4 grams of Marijuana, and numerous drug paraphernalia items were recovered.

The Delaware State Police charged Johnson with Possession of Heroin, Possession with Intent to Distribute Heroin, Possession of Marijuana, Possession with Intent to Distribute Marijuana, and two counts of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.  Johnson was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court 7 and committed to the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center $51,000.00 secured bond.

Traffic Stop Leads to Discovery of One Pot Meth Lab – Magnolia

Magnolia – Delaware State Police have arrested a Hartly woman for operating a one pot meth lab, after the vehicle she was a passenger in was stopped for a traffic violation.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:21 a.m., Sunday, April 22, 2018, when a Trooper stopped a silver, Volkswagen Jetta for a traffic violation on Fox Hollow Drive in Magnolia. Contact was made with the driver who was identified as Ashley N. Lane, 25, of Rehoboth, and the passenger who was identified as Sarah C. Bell, 30, of Hartly, both of whom were confirmed to be wanted on capiases out of the Kent County Court of Common Pleas.  Both subjects were taken into custody and a subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of materials commonly used to manufacture methamphetamine.

Through further investigation it was determined that all the materials belonged to Bell and that she was in fact actively manufacturing methamphetamine at the time the vehicle was stopped. Due to the hazardous and combustible nature of the materials used in this process, the Department of Natural Resources, along with the Delaware State Police Kent County Drug Unit responded to assist with the investigation. The one pot meth lab was subsequently rendered safe without incident.

Bell was charged with Unlawfully Operating a Clandestine Lab and then committed to the Dolores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution in lieu of $10,000.00 secured bail.

Lane was charged with Failure To Signal, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and released on $300.00 unsecured bail.

Troopers Arrest Two Suspects For Copper Wire Thefts

Camden Wyoming/Greenwood– The Delaware State Police have arrested two suspects in connection with multiple thefts of copper wire from commercial irrigation systems.

The investigation began in February 2018, when several thefts of copper wire from commercial irrigation systems spanning from Camden Wyoming to Greenwood were reported to the police.  Through investigative measures, Troopers were able to identify two suspects, 23-year-old Taylor Provanchie of Harrington and 30-year-old Thomas Bradley of HarringtonIt was determined that Provanchie and Bradley had stolen over 1,000 pounds of copper wire and received over $1,800.00 in proceeds from the scrap yard.

Taylor Provanchie was arrested on April 19, 2018 and charged with 8 counts of Theft (Felony), 7 counts of Criminal Trespass 3rd, 6 counts of Criminal Mischief, and 2 counts of Criminal Mischief (Felony).  Provanchie was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court 2 and released on $17,750.00 unsecured bond.

Thomas Bradley was arrested on April 23, 2018 and charged with 8 counts of Theft (Felony), 7 counts of Criminal Trespass 3rd, 4 counts of Criminal Mischief, and 2 counts of Criminal Mischief (Felony).  Bradley was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center on $28,207.00  secured bond.

Troopers Investigating Pharmacy Robbery- North Wilmington

Wilmington (19803) – Delaware State Police are investigating the robbery of a North Wilmington CVS pharmacy that took place early Friday morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:51 a.m., Friday April 20, 2018, at the CVS, located at 4020 Concord Pike, Wilmington, when two suspects, entered the business, confronted an employee as he worked behind the pharmacy counter and demanded drugs. As soon as the employee was confronted he alerted two other employees at which time all three fled the store on foot. As they exited the front doors, they were confronted by a third suspect who was waiting outside. The third suspect attempted to contain the three subjects within the store however they were able escape, but not before two of them were knocked to the ground by the suspect. All employees were able to get away without sustaining any injuries.

Further investigation determined that the two suspects who entered the business were able to obtain an undetermined quantity of drugs before exiting the store. Once outside all three suspects re-united and were last seen fleeing on foot, southbound on Concord Pike.

Descriptions of the suspects are as follows:

Suspect #1: Black male, 18-25 years of age, 5’8”-5’10”, 170-180 lbs., wearing all dark clothing. (Entered business)

Suspect #2: Black male, 18-25 years of age, 5’8”-5’10”, 170-180 lbs., wearing a black hoodie and jeans. (Entered business)

Suspect #3: Black male, 18-25 years of age, 6’0-6’2”, 200-230 lbs., large build, wearing a black hoodie and light colored pants. (Remained outside)

*UPDATE* Troopers Seek Public’s Assistance in Identifying Knifepoint Robbery Suspect

Bear – Delaware State Police detectives are continuing their investigation into an armed robbery involving a knife, that occurred at approximately 10:09 a.m., Monday, March 26, 2018, at the GameStop, located at 1015 Governors Place, Bear, in which a white male suspect approached the 29 year old female employee at the sales counter, displayed a knife, and demanded money from the register.

The suspect is described as white male, 40-45 years of age, and was wearing blue jeans, a black knit cap, tan latex gloves,  a gray over black parka style coat with red trim, gray hood and large collar that was pulled up to conceal his face.

Troopers Arrest Two for Operating Meth Lab – Seaford

Seaford – Delaware State police have arrested a pair of subjects for their involvement in a meth lab operation at a residence in Seaford.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:37 a.m., Saturday, April 21, 2018, when Troopers received information that two wanted suspects were currently occupying a residence in the 6000 block of Owls Nest Road, Seaford. Upon arrival Troopers made contact with Mary B. Fleetwood, 36, and Zachary C. Hufnell, 29, both of Seaford, who were both confirmed to have active court capiases.

Upon taking the pair in to custody, Troopers observed in plain view, materials commonly used to manufacture methamphetamine, at which time they secured the residence due to the hazardous and combustible nature of the process.

Members of the Delaware State Police Sussex County Drug Unit and the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) were then contacted to assist with the investigation.  A subsequent search of both the interior and exterior of the property confirmed that a methamphetamine manufacturing lab was present on the property. Components used to manufacture methamphetamine, along with key ingredients in making the drug were safely collected and seized, along with .021 grams of heroin and 1.03 grams of methamphetamine.

No evacuations were ordered as it was determined that there was no immediate hazard to nearby residents.

Hufnell and Fleetwood were transported to Delaware State Police Troop 4, where they were arrested and charged with one count each of Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Manufacturing a Controlled Substance, Unlawfully Operating a Clandestine Laboratory and Conspiracy 2nd Degree.

Both subjects were arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court #3, where secured bail was set at $74,000.00. Hufnell was then committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution, and Fleetwood to the Dolores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution.

*Update* Troopers Seek Public’s Assistance in Identifying Attempted Robbery Suspect

Wilmington (19803)- Delaware State Police are investigating the attempted robbery of a Wilmington man in a grocery store parking lot and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the above pictured suspect who is wanted in connection.

The incident occurred on Friday, April 6, 2018 at approximately 4:40 p.m. when Troopers were dispatched to the parking lot of the Acme, located at 1901 Concord Pike for a report of an attempted robbery.  Upon arrival, Troopers made contact with an 80-year-old victim who advised he had just walked out of the Acme and over to his vehicle, when he was approached by a subject asking for a helping hand.  The victim informed the subject that he did not have any money.  The suspect then proceeded to grab the victim’s pocket in an attempt to take his wallet.  The victim was able to pull away from the suspect, who then took off running without obtaining any personal belongings.  The victim was not harmed as a result of this incident.

The suspect was described as a white male, approximately 25-35 years of age, 5’07”-5’09” tall, 130-140 pounds, thin build, with brown hair, wearing a green and white Phillies jersey over a long sleeve gray t-shirt, blue jeans and black boots. The suspect was carrying a black cane, but did not appear to require the use of the device for mobility.  It is believed that the suspect had a light patch of skin on his right cheek.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information regarding this incident and the identity of the suspect is asked to please contact the Troop 2 Robbery Unit,  Detective C. Hevelow  at 302-365-8566.

Community CafeWilmington –  Delaware State Police Troop 1 will be holding a Community Café on Tuesday, May 1, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., at the Brew Ha Ha, located at 3838 Kennett Pike, Wilmington. Community members will have the opportunity to meet and interact with the commanding officers from Troop 1, as well as the Community Outreach Trooper. This Community Café is often referred to as “Coffee with a Cop” in other police agencies and is being held in an effort to build a stronger relationship between the Delaware State Police and the communities that we so proudly serve.

Delaware State Police Announce 2017 Trooper and Civilian Employee of the Year

Cheswold, DE- At a ceremony held  on Friday, April 20, 2018, Superintendent of the Delaware State Police, Colonel Nathaniel McQueen Jr., announced the winners of the annual Trooper of the Year and Civilian of the Year awards.

Trooper of the Year

Each year the Delaware State Police Executive Staff selects one trooper for the Trooper of the Year Award. To be nominated, a trooper must exceed performance standards and be recognized by his or her peers as one who epitomizes the Core Values of the Division, which are Honor, Integrity, Courage, Loyalty, Attitude, Discipline and Service.

This year, ten  Troopers were nominated for the award, and out of those worthy nominees, the Executive Staff selected Trooper First Class Andrew Shaub as the 2017 Trooper of the Year, for his outstanding efforts and contributions to the Division and the citizens of the State of Delaware.

Tfc. Andrew Shaub is a 3 and ½ year member of the division, currently assigned to Troop 1, Penny Hill.  Tfc. Shaub had a spectacular year in both over-all production and in handling exceptional cases. Tfc. Shaub was also one of the top producers at Troop 1 during 2017 in traffic arrests, DUI arrests, criminal arrests, and complaints handled.    Tfc. Shaub was also selected by the Headquarters Traffic Section to be a participant in the Division’s  DUI Mentoring Program and by the DSP Academy to be a Field Training Officer. Tfc. Shaub is a highly motivated Trooper, determined to make a positive impact in the community with his proactive style of police work.

Civilian of the Year

Each year the Delaware State Police Executive Staff selects one civilian employee for the Civilian of the Year Award. Civilian employees who are nominated for this award display outstanding performance and meet the following criteria:

  1. Exceptional service as identified by the employee’s performance evaluations
  2. A consistent record of such service through their years of employment
  3. Recognition by their peers for outstanding character and integrity.

This year, seven Delaware State Police civilian employees were nominated for the award. The Executive Staff of the Delaware State Police selected Senior Victim Services Specialist, Mrs. Veronica (Roni) Colombo as the 2017 Civilian of the Year.

Roni is assigned to the victim services section, with her office located at Troop 9 in Odessa. Roni has been employed by the Division for ten years; however, she was previously employed by The Ferris School for Boys for ten years giving her 20 years of overall state service.

The victim services section provides crisis intervention, information and referral services to crime victims, witnesses and family members for cases investigated by the Delaware State Police, as well as 35 other municipal police departments throughout the state. These cases are primarily related to suicides, homicides, fatal car crashes, robberies, sexual assaults and domestic violence incidents. Each year, Roni leads the way in the number of cases assigned to her, averaging over 800 cases per year. Roni has also been a key partner in planning Annual events such as Domestic Violence Awareness, the Crime Victim Memorial Tribute, and Day of Remembrance for murder victims, and others.
