*UPDATE-Arrest Made* Troopers Investigating a Rash of Burglaries- New Castle County

New Castle: The Delaware State Police have identified and charged two Maryland men in connection with an overnight burglary spree that took place in August, 2018.

On Sunday, August 19, 2018 between the hours of 3:07 a.m. and 3:26 a.m., Troopers handled a total of five burglaries to businesses on Naamans Road in Wilmington.  A sixth burglary occurred just over an hour later at approximately 4:44 a.m. in the Newark area. The businesses burglarized consisted of pharmacies and cellular phone stores.

Through a variety of investigative measures and leads, detectives were able to positively identify and link Anthony Smith, 32 of Bowie, MD and Stefon Janey, 26 of Upper Marlboro MD, to all six burglaries.

During the course of the burglary investigation detectives obtained evidence which also linked Smith and Janey to three incidents that occurred in May 2018 which were being investigated by the Delaware State Police Drug Diversion Unit. In these incidents Smith and Janey were able to make access to the pharmacies at three Acme grocery stores located in New Castle County, during normal business hours, and make off with prescription medications.

Based on the findings from both investigations warrants were obtained on November 11, 2018, charging Smith and Janey with the following:

  • Burglary 3rd Degree (6 counts)
  • Wearing a Disguise during the Commission of a Felony (6 counts)
  • Conspiracy 2nd Degree (9 counts)
  • Possession of Burglary Tools (5 counts)
  • Theft greater than $1500.00 (2 counts)
  • Theft less than$1500.00 (3 counts)
  • Criminal Mischief (6 counts)
  • Drug Theft (3 counts)

On Thursday, December 6, 2018 Smith was extradited from Virginia back to Delaware and while at Troop 2 he was formally charged and then arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 2. He was then committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $61,000.00 secured bail.

Janey is currently being detained in Prince Georges County MD, pending extradition back to Delaware at which time he will be formally charged.

Anyone with information regarding the related investigations are asked to contact Detective B. Harris of the Troop 2 Burglary Unit at 302-365-8410 or Detective A. McCloskey of the Drug Diversion Unit at 302-365-8392.
