Troopers Investigating Robbery of Gas Station- Wilmington

WilmingtonThe Delaware State Police are investigating the robbery of a Wilmington area gas station that occurred early Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:09 a.m., Tuesday, April 28, 2020, at the BP Gas Station, located at 3507 Miller Road, Wilmington. A male suspect confronted an employee at the sales counter and demanded money while implying he had a handgun in his waistband. The employee complied with the demand and turned over an undisclosed amount of cash to the suspect, who then fled on foot in an unknown direction. The employee was not injured as a result of the incident.

The suspect was described as a male wearing dark-colored clothing.

*Update* Death Investigation Ruled a Homicide-Harrington

Harrington-  The Delaware State Police Homicide Unit is continuing to investigate the death that has been ruled a homicide, of a male victim after he was found lying unresponsive in the roadway.

The incident occurred on April 24, 2020 at approximately 1:10 a.m., when Troopers were dispatched to Killens Pond Road, between Sandbox Road and Bloomfield Road, Harrington, when a passerby reported a subject lying in the roadway.  Upon arrival a 40-year-old male was located unresponsive in the roadway and transported to the Sussex Bayhealth Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The victim, identified as John W. Groff, 40, of Lincoln, DE was turned over to the Delaware Division of Forensic Science where an autopsy was performed and the cause and manner of death was determined to be a homicide sustained from two gunshot wounds to the upper body.

The investigation continues to remain active and ongoing.

*UPDATE* Notification of Police Activity- Newark

Newark – On April 27, 2020, at approximately 6:09 p.m. the Delaware State Police responded to the 700 block of E. Chestnut Hill Rd., for a report of loud bangs. As precautionary measures, Troopers and Special Operations Response Team responded out of an abundance of caution for the residents and community. Further investigation determined the incident was not criminal in nature, and only a verbal domestic had occurred. There were no injures as a result of this incident.

The area of E. Chestnut Hill Rd. (Rt. 4) was closed in both directions between Augusta Dr. and Salem Church Rd. for approximately six hours as a result of the investigation. The roadway is now open.

Notification of Police Activity – Newark

Newark – The Delaware State Police are currently conducting an investigation in the 700 block of E. Chestnut Hill Rd., Newark. At this time the incident is contained to a specific residence, however as a precautionary measure E. Chestnut Hill Rd. (Rt. 4) has been closed in both directions between Augusta Dr. and Salem Church Rd.  Citizens will notice a police presence in the vicinity and are asked to avoid the area. The investigation is active and ongoing with further details being released as they become available.

*UPDATE- Suspect Identified and Arrested* Troopers Attempt to Identify Commercial Burglary Suspect- Laurel

Laurel– The Delaware State Police and Laurel Police Department have identified and arrested, 41-year-old Carlton Robinson, formerly of Lake Wales, Florida, currently reported as homeless, wanted in connection with commercial burglaries.

The Delaware State Police and Laurel Police Department were investigating commercial burglaries that occurred on April 22, 2020. Troopers initially were dispatched at 1:00 a.m. to Reese’s Liquor Store, located at 30231 Sussex Highway, Laurel, for a burglary. At 3:31 a.m., the Laurel Police Department was dispatched to a second burglary, which occurred at Exxon, located in the town limits of Laurel at 30341 Sussex Highway.

Through investigative measures, the two police departments identified Robinson. On April 27, 2020, Robinson was taken into custody by Laurel Police Department. He was transported back to Laurel Police Department where he was charged with the following:

  • Burglary 3rd (2 counts)
  • Theft Under $1500 (2 counts)
  • Criminal Mischief Under $1000 (2 counts)
  • Failure to Obey an Emergency Order

Robinson was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $3,750.00 secure bond.

Shots Fired Complaints Lead to Arrest of Georgetown Man-Georgetown

Georgetown- The Delaware State Police have arrested 23-year-old Jeff T. Cotonon-Ramos, of Georgetown on weapon charges stemming from multiple shots fired complaints.

The incident occurred on April 26, 2020 at approximately 7:20 p.m., when Troopers were dispatched to the area of Briarwood Road, Georgetown, in reference to a shots fired complaint.  Upon arrival, Troopers made contact with a resident who stated they heard gunshots from their residence and saw a blue in color Toyota Corolla traveling on Briarwood Road.  A second report of shots fired was then reported in the area of Shingle Point Road.  A Trooper observed a blue Toyota Corolla with registration tags matching those provided by a witness traveling northbound on Sand Hill Road approaching Sand Hill Lane.  A traffic stop was initiated and contact was made with the driver, a 24-year-old male of Georgetown, and passenger Jeff Cotonon-Ramos.  An odor of alcohol was detected and a DUI investigation ensued.

Further investigation led to the discovery of a Glock 19 firearm along with 9mm round casings on the passenger’s side floor of the vehicle.  Both the driver and Cotonon-Ramos were taken into custody without incident and transported back to Troop 4.  There were no reports of injuries or anything being struck as a result of this incident.

Cotonon-Ramos was charged with the following:

  • Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon A Firearm (Felony)
  • Possession of a Firearm while under the influence
  • Disorderly Conduct
  • Fail to Obey an Emergency Order

Cotonon-Ramos was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $5500.00 secured bond.

The 24-year-old male was charged with misdemeanor offenses including the following:

  • Driving a Vehicle Under the Influence
  • Fail to Obey an Emergency Order
  • Conspiracy Third Degree

He was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $3000.00 cash only bond.

Troopers Investigating Attempted Robbery-Lincoln

Lincoln- The Delaware State Police are investigating an attempted robbery that occurred last evening at a residence in the Cedar Village Mobile Home Park.

The incident occurred on April 26, 2020 at approximately 9:50 p.m., when Troopers were dispatched to a residence on Major Street, Lincoln, for a report of an attempted robbery.  Upon arrival, Troopers met with a 20-year-old male resident who advised that two unknown subjects knocked on his front door.  When the victim answered the door, the subjects asked him if he had any drugs.  When the victim indicated that he did not, a physical altercation ensued at the front door.

The suspects then proceeded to kick the front door in an attempt to enter the residence.  The suspects were unable to gain entry and fled the scene.  The victim was not injured as a result of this incident.

The suspects were described as two black males, one who spoke with a Haitian accent.

Troopers Investigating Shoplifting Turned Robbery – Wilmington

Wilmington – The Delaware State Police are investigating a shoplifting turned robbery that occurred at a Wilmington area grocery store on Saturday morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:19 a.m., Saturday, April 25, 2020 at the ACME grocery store, located at 1308 Centerville Rd., Wilmington. A male suspect filled a shopping cart with merchandise and then exited the store without paying. When confronted in the parking lot by store employees, who asked the suspect for payment or a return of the merchandise, he displayed a knife and refused to comply. The suspect then fled the parking lot in a black, KIA Soul. The employees were not injured as a result of the incident.

The suspect was described as a black male, 20-25 years of age, 5’8”-5”10” tall, 140-150 lbs., wearing a dark colored shirt and jeans.
