Newark- The Delaware State Police are currently on scene of a serious crash that occurred at approximately 10:33 p.m., on July 14, 2020.

As a result of this crash and ongoing investigation, East Chestnut Hill Road (Rt. 4) between Todd Estates and Gender Road is closed at this time.

Motorists will experience delays in the area and are advised to seek alternate routes of travel.

Delaware State Police Seek Assistance With an Unsolved Murder- Wilmington

Wilmington– The Delaware State Police Homicide Unit continue investigating the murder of Susan Ledyard, 50, of Wilmington. On July 23, 2019, at 7:39 a.m., Susan’s body was found in the Brandywine River near Northeast Boulevard.

An autopsy conducted by the Division of Forensic Science ruled Susan’s cause of death to be blunt force trauma and drowning. Susan’s car was parked on Walkers Mill Road, approximately three miles from where Susan’s body was discovered, but it is not believed Susan entered the river where her car was parked.

Through investigative measures, detectives have been able to account for Susan’s activity until 3:00 a.m. on July 23, 2019, the night before she was found but the publics’ assistance is still needed in determining her actions between 3:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m., as well as any information that will lead to the identification of her killer.

Troopers Investigating Shots Fired Incident-Felton

Felton- The Delaware State Police are investigating a shots fired incident that occurred earlier this morning.

The incident occurred on July 12, 2020 at approximately 4:28 a.m., when Troopers were dispatched to the unit block of  Skinner Lane, Felton, for a report of shots being fired.  Upon arrival, it was learned that two male residents were inside when the exterior of their residence was struck by gunfire.  Further investigation revealed that three rounds stuck the residence and one went through the wall.  The occupants did not sustain injury as a result of this incident.

There is no suspect information at this time.

*Update*-*TRAFFIC ADVISORY* Troopers Investigating Serious Crash on Coastal Highway (RT 1) at Brick Granary Rd.-Milford

Milford- The Delaware State Police are continuing to investigate a serious crash involving a single vehicle that occurred last evening in which multiple individuals sustained injury.

The incident occurred on July 11, 2020, at approximately 11:37 p.m., when a 2014 Dodge Durango was traveling southbound on Coastal Hwy (SR 1)  just north of Brick Granary Road. For unknown reasons, the Durango exited the right side of the roadway and struck a guard rail and bridge wall/ barrier. This impact, diverted the vehicle back across the roadway where it exited the southbound lanes and entered the grass median, and overturned several times.  All eight occupants were removed from the vehicle before it became fully engulfed in a fire.

The operator, a 31-year-old male from Philadelphia, PA was not properly restrained.  He was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.  His girlfriend, a 28-year-old female passenger from Philadelphia, PA was properly restrained.  She was transported to the hospital and treated and released for minor injuries.

There were six children in the vehicle ranging from ages 10-2, all who were properly restrained, however none were seated in child safety seats.  Three of the children, two 3-year-olds and a 6-year-old were transported to the hospital with critical injuries.  The other three children, a 10-year-old and two 2-year-olds were also transported to the hospital where they were treated and released with non-life threatening injuries.

Coastal Hwy northbound and southbound lanes in the area of Brick Granary Road was closed for approximately 4 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.  Anyone with information in reference to this incident is asked to please contact Troop 7, Cpl/3 K. Troopers Investigating Attempted Robbery Of Pizza Store Owner-Greenwood

Greenwood- The Delaware State Police are investigating an attempted robbery of a pizza store owner that occurred last evening.

The incident occurred on July 10, 2020, at approximately 10:30 p.m., when Troopers were dispatched to the Stargate Pizza, located at 9634 Sussex Hwy, Greenwood, for a report of an attempted robbery.  Upon arrival, Troopers met with the store owner who advised that while he was closing the business, he was approached outside by a subject who proceeded to display a machete and demand money.  The store owner advised the suspect that he did not have any money and threw a pizza at him, causing the suspect to flee.   The store owner did not sustain injury as a result of this incident.

The suspect was described as a white male who ran from the scene and got into a vehicle on northbound Sussex Highway.

*Update* Troopers Investigating Fatal Crash on Rt 141 and Kennett Pike-Wilmington

Wilmington- The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a single vehicle that occurred early this morning.

The incident occurred on July 10, 2020, at approximately 5:51 a.m., when a 2001 Chevrolet Blazer SUV was southbound on Barley Rd. (DE 141) approaching the overpass for Kennett Pike (DE 52) For unknown reasons the 25-year-old operator of Wilmington failed to maintain within the southbound lanes as the vehicle approached the curved portion of the roadway. The Blazer exited the west edge of the roadway and struck the guardrail before becoming engulfed in flames.

The operator was the only occupant in the vehicle and was pronounced deceased at the scene. His name is being withheld at this time pending the notification of next of kin.

The roadway was closed for approximately 3 1/2 hours while the accident was investigated and cleared.

The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit. Anyone with information regarding the accident should contact Cpl/ J. Baldwin at 302-834-2620.

Troopers Attempting to Locate Bridgeville Man Wanted for Reckless Endangering-Bridgeville

Bridgeville- The Delaware State Police are seeking the public’s assistance in attempting to locate 18-year-old Damaj T. Showell who is wanted for reckless endangering and related charges.

The incident occurred on July 9, 2020, at approximately 10:40 p.m., when Troopers were dispatched to a residence in the 21000 block of Mill Park Drive, Bridgeville, in reference to a domestic incident involving a gun and shots fired.  Upon arrival, Troopers learned that Showell and his father had engaged in a verbal dispute earlier in the day, and Showell threatened his father that when it got dark outside, he would be back to see him.

Showell’s father was walking on Mill Park Drive after 10:00 p.m., when Showell, who was a passenger in a blue Mazda 6, drove by him displaying a handgun out of the passenger’s side window.  Showell then proceeded to fire the gun in the direction of his father and fled the scene.  The 43-year-old male victim did not sustain injury as a result of this incident.

Troopers have been unable to locate Damaj Showell who currently has an active warrant out of Troop 5 for the following:

  • Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited
  • Reckless Endanger First Degree
  • Breach of Release
