Delaware State Police Investigating Shooting Incident- Wilmington

Wilmington– Delaware State Police are investigating a shooting that occurred on Edgemoor Road in Wilmington early Monday morning.

At approximately 1:44 a.m., Monday, August 24, 2020, Troopers responded to Edgemoor Road in Wilmington, for a shooting. Upon arrival, a 17-year-old male was located with a single gunshot wound to his left leg. He was subsequently transported to an area hospital where he is being treated for the gunshot wound.

The initial investigation determined the male victim was walking alone on Edgemoor Road when an individual riding on Edgemoor Road shot him. 

The only suspect information known at this time is the suspect is believed to be a male occupying the rear seat in a dark-colored SUV.

Harrington– Delaware State Police have identified the names of the of the individuals who died in a crash on August 21, 2020, on  southbound S. Dupont Highway (US 13) at State Fair Boulevard, as  passenger 81-year-old Joyce E. Thompson of Lincoln, DE and driver 80-year-old Terry L. Troutman of Lincoln, DE.  Both individuals were transported from the scene to area hospitals where they succumbed to their injuries.

The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.

Delaware State Police Investigating Shooting at Hotel – Newark

Newark- The Delaware State Police are investigating a shooting incident that occurred early this morning and left one man wounded.

The incident occurred on August 22, 2020 at approximately 12:25 a.m., when Troopers were dispatched to the Sonesta Suites, located at 240 Chapman Road, Newark, in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, it was discovered that a 21 year-old male from Claymont had been shot and was being taken to the hospital by other subjects on scene. Troopers located the vehicle in transport to the hospital and performed lifesaving first-aid until Emergency Medical Services arrived. The victim was then transported by ambulance to a local hospital for a gunshot wound to his back and left arm.

Further investigation revealed that the victim was at the hotel for a party in one of the rooms. While in the parking lot there were multiple gunshots, and the victim was struck twice. A total of 18 rounds were fired at the scene from four separate caliber firearms.

Troopers recovered a Smith and Wesson .38 special revolver at the scene.

There is no suspect information at this time and no other reported injuries.

Delaware State Police Investigating Fatal Crash- Harrington

Harrington– Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 5:05 p.m., Friday, August 21, 2020, on southbound S. Dupont Highway (US 13) at State Fair Boulevard.

The initial investigation has determined a 2011 Hyundai Tucson, driven by a 80-year-old Lincoln man was traveling eastbound on State Fair Boulevard approaching a posted stop sign at the intersection of S. Dupont Highway (US 13) southbound. A 2015 Chevrolet Express work van operated by a 46 year-old male from Bridgeville was traveling southbound on S. Dupont Highway (US 13) approaching State Fair Boulevard. The Tucson attempted to cross southbound S. Dupont Highway when it was struck by the Express van. The impact pushed the Tucson off of the roadway into the grass median which caused it to overturn and partially eject the operator and the front seat passenger, an 81 year-old female from Lincoln.

The driver of the Tucson and the front passenger were not properly restrained. They were both transported by Delaware State Police helicopters to a local area hospital for their injuries. The front passenger was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. Her name is being withheld at this time pending the notification of next of kin.

Southbound S. Dupont Highway (Rt. 13) was closed for approximately 3 hours while the investigation was completed and the roadway was cleared.

Delaware State Police Attempting to Identify Attempted Burglary Suspect- Wilmington

Wilmington– The Delaware State Police are seeking the public’s assistance in attempting to identify the pictured suspect who is wanted in connection with a burglary.

The incident occurred on August 16, 2020 at Pleasant Hill Bowling Lanes located at 1001 West Newport Pike Wilmington, DE. After the suspect arrived at the business, a prying tool was used in an attempt to enter the closed business. After failing to gain entry, the suspect flees in a west bound direction toward Delaware State Route 4 in an unknown type of sedan pictured above.

The suspect is described as a white male, wearing a dark colored jacket, shorts, and dark colored shoes.

Delaware State Police Investigating Fatal Crash- Middletown

Middletown– Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 8:09 p.m., Wednesday, August 19, 2020, on Saint Augustine Beach Road south of 6th Street.

The initial investigation has determined a 2014 Kia Sportage, driven by a 59-year-old Townsend man was traveling southbound on Saint Augustine Beach Road from the area of Port Penn. In the area of 1800 Saint Augustine Beach Road, the roadway curves gradually to the right. For unknown reasons, the operator failed to negotiate the curve in the roadway, traveled across the solid double yellow line, and the northbound lane of travel before traveling off the east edge of the road and the front center of the vehicle struck a tree located on the east side of the roadway.

The driver of the Kia was not properly restrained and pronounced deceased at the scene.

Saint Augustine Beach Road was closed for approximately 4 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

Traffic Stop Leads to Virginia Men Arrested for Drug Charges- Newark

Newark– Delaware State Police have arrested 37 year-old Lenoard T. Brooks of Cape Charles, VA and 29 year-old Jaron Nottingham of Cape Charles, VA for drug charges following a traffic stop.

On 8/19/2020 at approximately 3:43 p.m. a Trooper on patrol in the area of southbound State Route 1 and State Route 273, Newark, observed a gray Chevrolet Equinox following a vehicle too closely and make a lane change without signaling 300′ prior to changing lanes.  A traffic stop was made on the vehicle and contact was made with the driver who was later identified as Brooks and passenger who was later identified as Nottingham.  Upon contacting the vehicle, the trooper smelled an odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. 

Located inside the Equinox was approximately 1.5 grams of marijuana, approximately 1,049 grams of cocaine that was packaged separately in clear bags and approximately $6,000 in suspected drug proceeds.

     Lenoard T. Brooks

Brooks was taken into custody without incident and transported to Troop 6 where he was charged with the following crimes:

  • Possession with Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance (felony)
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance (felony)
  • Conspiracy Second Degree (felony)
  • Possession Of Marijuana (civil violation)
  • Following A Motor Vehicle Too Closely
  • Failure to Signal

Brooks was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court #2 and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $51,003.00 cash bond. 

         Jaron Nottingham

Nottingham was taken into custody without incident and transported to Troop 6 where he was charged with the following crimes:

  • Possession with Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance (felony)
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance (felony)
  • Conspiracy Second Degree (felony)
  • Possession of Marijuana (civil violation)

Nottingham was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court #2 and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $51,001.00 cash bond.
