Delaware City- Delaware State Police is issuing a traffic advisory for the Delaware City area as a result of Delaware City DMV holding a COVID-19 vaccination clinic today.  As a result, the following roadways are experiencing heavy traffic and long delays:

  • South DuPont Highway in the area of Wrangle Hill Road (SR 72)
  • Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway (SR 1) southbound at the Wrangle Hill Road/Delaware City Exit
  • Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway (SR1) northbound at the Wrangle Hill Road/Delaware City Exit

Delays are expected to remain in effect for an extended period of time.

Travelers are urged to seek alternate routes of travel and avoid the area.

Delaware State Police Seeking Public’s Assistance Locating Wanted Dagsboro Man- Dagsboro

Dagsboro- Delaware State Police are seeking the public’s assistance with locating 40-year-old Leonel A. Velasquez-Chery of Dagsboro.

On January 22, 2021, at approximately 7:50 p.m., troopers were dispatched to a residence on Shawnee Drive, Dagsboro, for a reported assault involving a weapon. Through the investigation it was determined Leonel A. Velasquez-Chery entered the residence and assaulted a 21-year-old male acquaintance. During the incident, Leonel held a large knife near the victims face. The victim did not require medical attention. During the incident, there was a 1-year-old child in the residence.

Leonel is wanted out of Delaware State Police Troop 4 for the following charges:

  • Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony (Felony)
  • Aggravated Menacing (Felony)
  • Assault 3rd Degree
  • Endangering the Welfare of a Child

Delaware State Police Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Collision- Milford

Milford- Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian collision that occurred earlier this evening.

On January 22, 2021, at approximately 5:57 p.m., a 2004 Suzuki GSX was traveling northbound on Log Cabin Road. An 85-year-old male of Milford had pulled into his driveway of a residence in the 1000 block of Log Cabin Road. The male exited his parked vehicle and began crossing the road in the direction of his mailbox when he was struck near the center of the roadway by the Suzuki. After the initial impact, the Suzuki overturned, and the 24-year-old male operator of Milford was ejected from the motorcycle.

The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene. Identification is pending notification to next of kin.

The motorcycle operator suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital by ambulance.

Log Cabin Road was closed for approximately 3 hours while the investigation was completed and the roadway cleared.

Multiple Day Search Results in Locating Suspected Human Remains- Gumboro

Gumboro- Delaware State Police, with the assistance of the Division of Forensic Science, have discovered suspected human remains Friday morning in the 30000 block of R Farm Lane, Gumboro.

The suspected human remains have been turned over to the Division of Forensic Science for identification and manner of death.

Traffic Stop Leads to Weapon and Drug Arrests- Bridgeville

Bridgeville- Delaware State Police make traffic stop that leads to weapon and drug arrests of three subjects.

On January 21, 2021,  at approximately 8:05 p.m., Delaware State Police conducting proactive patrol observed two passenger vehicles traveling northbound on King Road in the area of Cavalry Lane, at an apparent high rate of speed.  The trailing vehicle, a silver Chevrolet Malibu, was following the vehicle in front of it at a close distance. The trooper was able to conduct a traffic stop on the Chevrolet Malibu on Coverdale Road north of Hastings Farm Road.

As the trooper approached the vehicle and made contact with the 23-year-old male operator of Laurel, the odor of Marijuana was detected from inside the vehicle. Also visible inside the vehicle was the handle of a Anderson Manufacturing AR-15 rifle near the rear drivers’ side passenger, 19- year-old Quadyr Whitney of Laurel.  Whitney and the other three occupants of the vehicle were removed from the vehicle and a criminal investigation ensued. The right rear passenger later identified as 19-year-old Jareon Smith of Delmar was taken into custody without incident after a Springfield Armory Hellcat 9mm handgun and approximately .091 grams of heroin was located on his person. The handgun in Smith’s possession was reported stolen on January 4, 2021 with the Laurel Police Department. The front seat passenger, later identified as 23-year-old Jaquail Bland of Laurel was also found to be in possession of a fully loaded Glock 17 handgun with an extended magazine and a loaded I.O. Inc. Hellcat .380 handgun. A computer search also revealed Bland had active warrants our of Sussex County Family Court and Laurel Police Department.

As a result of this investigation, the individuals were transported to Troop 5 where they were charged with the following crimes:

Jaquail A. Bland was charged with the following crimes:

  • Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony (Felony)
  • Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon a Firearm (2 counts- Felony)

Bland was arraigned in the Justice of the Peace Court #3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of a $28,484 secured bond.

 

Jareon T. Smith was charged with the following crimes:

  • Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony (Felony)
  • Possession of a Deadly Weapon by Person Prohibited Who Also Possesses a Controlled Substance (Felony)
  • Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon a Firearm (Felony)
  • Receiving a Stolen Firearm (Felony)
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

Smith was arraigned in the Justice of the Peace Court #3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of a $32,000 secured bond.

 

Quadyr Whitney was charged with the following crimes:

  • Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon a Firearm (Felony)

Whitney was arraigned in the Justice of the Peace Court #3 and released on a $7,500 unsecured bond.

 

The 23-year-old male operator was issued the following traffic summons and released:

  • Unreasonable Speed
