Delaware State Police Investigating Serious Multi-Vehicle Collision- Bridgeville

Bridgeville- Delaware State Police are investigating a serious multi-vehicle collision that occurred Sunday morning.

On March 28, 2021, at approximately 8:53 a.m., a 2012 Ford Escape operated by a 27-year-old man of Berlin, MD, was traveling eastbound on Seashore Highway, approaching the intersection of Sussex Highway with a red light. A 2017 Ford Explorer (fully marked Laurel Police Department K9 Police Car) operated by a Laurel Police Department Officer with 14 years of service was traveling southbound on Sussex Highway in the left lane approaching the intersection of Seashore Highway with a green light. A 2006 Ford Escape operated by a 66-year-old female of Millsboro was traveling northbound on Sussex Highway, stopped in the turn lane for westbound Seashore Highway with a red light. The operator of the 2012 Ford Escape failed to stop for the red light, entered the intersection directly into the path of the Laurel Police Department police car, and the front of the Escape struck the right front of the police car within the intersection. As a result of the impact, the police car was forced into the 2006 Ford Escape, causing it to overturn onto its roof before coming to rest within the turn lane. The police car continued traveling in a southeasterly direction and came to rest on the concrete island. After the initial impact, the 2012 Ford Escape rotated clockwise and came to rest upright within the intersection.

All three operators were properly restrained.

The operator of the 2012 Ford Escape was transported to an area hospital by ambulance and admitted with serious injuries.

The operator of the Ford Explorer was transported to an area hospital by ambulance with minor injuries and discharged. The officer’s K9 partner was not injured. The officer was en route to Laurel town limits after assisting the Delaware State Police with a call for service.

The operator of the 2006 Ford Escape was transported to an area hospital by ambulance and admitted with serious injuries.

This collision remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit. Delaware State Police Issue Traffic Advisory Rte 1 Northbound at Exit 156- New Castle

New Castle- Delaware State Police is issuing a traffic advisory for Rte 1 northbound at Red Lion Creek Bridge (Jug Handle).
Due to an overturned tractor trailer, Exit 156 will be closed for an extended period of time.

Rte 1 northbound is closed at the Tybouts split and all traffic is being diverted to US 13 northbound.

Motorist are urged to seek alternate routes of travel.

Troopers Arrest Wilmington Man After Committing Two Armed Robberies- New Castle

New Castle- Delaware State Police arrested 57-year-old Donald J. Cunningham of Wilmington on robbery charges after he committed two armed robberies at Rite Aid stores.

On March 27, 2021, at approximately 8:30p.m., Delaware State Police responded to Rite Aid located at 701 Governor’s Place, Bear, for a reported armed robbery. During the incident, the suspect produced what appeared to be an all black semi-automatic handgun and displayed it toward the cashier. After obtaining an undisclosed amount of money, the suspect took the cashier outside of the business and attempted to obtain the victim’s cellphone and car keys.  When he was unsuccessful, he fled the area on foot.

On March 28, 2021, at approximately 2:17 a.m., troopers responded to a reported armed robbery at Rite Aid located at 1718 Marsh Road, Wilmington. The suspect in this incident was described as the same suspect in the Governor’s Square robbery and during the robbery the suspect displayed what appeared to be a black semi-automatic handgun toward the cashier and another store employee. The suspect was able to obtain an undisclosed amount of money and fled the business on foot.

No one was injured during either incident.

Through investigative measures, troopers were able to determine the suspect in both robberies was Donald Cunningham. At approximately 2:30 a.m., Cunningham was located during a traffic stop on Harrison St., Wilmington. During the traffic stop, officers observed in plain view what appeared to be a black semi-automatic handgun and Rite Aid bag. Cunningham was taken into custody without incident and transported to Troop 2 where he was charged with the following crimes:

  • 3 counts- Robbery 1st Degree (Felony)

Cunningham was arraigned in the Justice of the Peace Court #11 and committed to Howard R Young Correctional Institution on a $30,000.00 cash bond.

*Update #2* Notice of Increased Police Presence- Seaford

Seaford-Delaware State Police are currently investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred last evening in Seaford.

The incident occurred on March 25, 2021, at approximately 7:13 p.m., when troopers were dispatched to Danny Drive to assist medical personnel. As medical personnel and troopers were engaging the 51-year-old female of Seaford, she armed herself with a firearm and threatened the individuals with the weapon. A Delaware State Trooper reacted to the threat by shooting the suspect with the departmental-issued handgun.

The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. Her name is being withheld at this time, pending the notification of next of kin.

The troopers and medical personnel did not sustain an injury as a result of this incident. The trooper assigned to Delaware State Police Troop 5 is currently placed on administrative duty in adherence to Delaware State Police Divisional Policy.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. The Delaware State Police Homicide Unit is conducting the investigation.

Troopers Investigating a Rash of Burglaries- Newark

Newark- The Delaware State Police are currently investigating multiple burglaries that occurred on Thursday, during the early morning hours.

On Thursday March 25, 2021, between 2:31 a.m. and 4:12 a.m., Troopers handled a total of six burglaries to businesses on Capitol Trail, Newark.

  • Golden Palace, 1450 Capitol Trail- The suspects arrived in the front of the store at approximately 2:31 a.m. and forced entry through the front glass doors with an unknown object.  Once inside, the suspects removed a bag containing an undisclosed amount of money and fled the scene.
  • Buriram Sushi, 1126 Capitol Trail- The suspects arrived in the front of the store at approximately 2:45 a.m. and forced entry through the front glass doors with a crowbar.  Once inside, the suspects proceeded to the cash register, where they removed an undisclosed amount of cash prior to fleeing the scene.
  • Ole Tapas, 1126 Capitol Trail- The suspects arrived in the front of the store at approximately 3:21 a.m. and forced entry through the front glass doors with an unknown object.  Once inside, the suspects proceeded to the cash register, where they removed an undisclosed amount of cash and an I-Pad prior to fleeing the scene.
  • Tagpuan Philippine Cuisine, 700 Capitol Trail- Between the hours of 3:08 a.m- 4:12 a.m., two suspects made forced entry by breaking a glass window with an unknown object. The suspects removed an undisclosed amount of cash from the cash register and fled the scene.
  • Lock Optical, 700 Capitol Trail- Between the hours of 3:08 a.m.- 4:12 a.m., two suspects made forced entry by breaking a glass window with an unknown object. The suspects removed various types of glasses and sunglasses from the business and fled the scene.
  • Perkins Restaurant, 700 Capitol Trail- Between the hours of 3:08 a.m.- 4:12 a.m., two suspects made forced entry through a glass window breaking it with a brick.  Once inside the suspects broke into a safe and removed an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the scene.

The suspects are described as two black males dressed in all dark clothing wearing hooded jackets and masks.  No surveillance images are available at this time.

Troopers Seek Public’s Assistance Identifying Burglary Suspects- Dover

Dover- Delaware State Police seek the public’s assistance with identifying the three pictured suspects wanted in connection to a burglary that occurred on March 6, 2021, at the Shore Stop/Valero located at 1491 S. Governors Avenue, Dover.

On March 6, 2021, the suspects threw objects at an exterior window during the overnight hours, causing it to shatter and made entry into the business. Once inside, the suspects removed items from the store and fled on foot toward Webbs Lane. A short time later, the three suspects returned to the business and took additional items before fleeing northbound on South Governors Avenue towards Gunning Bedford Drive in the Rodney Village Community.

 

 

  • The first suspect is described as a male subject, 5’10”-6′, and approximately 150 lbs. He was wearing a black Nasa hooded sweatshirt, black pants, tan Timberland style boots, black mask, and black gloves.
  • The second suspect is described as a male subject, approximately 6′ tall, and approximately 160 lbs. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with a memorial photo on the front of a black males, black shoes, and white mask.

 

  • The third suspect is described as a male subject, approximately 6′ tall, and approximately 180 lbs. He was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt with black spots on the shoulders, black sweatpants with two white stripes down the legs, and black shoes.

Seaford- Delaware State Police are currently investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred last evening in Seaford.

At approximately 7:13 p.m. on March 25,2021, troopers were dispatched to Danny Drive, Seaford. During the course of the investigation, an incident occurred which resulted in a Delaware State Trooper firing his divisional issued weapon and resulted in the death of a 51-year-old Seaford woman.  This investigation is still in the early stages and no further information will be released until appropriate next-to-kin notifications have been made.

The trooper assigned to Delaware State Police Troop 5 is currently placed on administrative duty in adherence to Delaware State Police Divisional Policy.

The Delaware State Police Homicide Unit is conducting the investigation.
