Hit and Run Driver Charged after Striking a Bicyclist – Rehoboth

Rehoboth Beach – The Delaware State Police have charged a Millsboro man with Vehicular Assault and other traffic related offenses after he struck a bicyclist and left the scene.

The incident occurred around 4:50 p.m. Saturday July 10, 2021 when a 20-year-old Rehoboth woman was riding her bicycle on the westbound shoulder of Rehoboth Beach Ext. (SR1A), just west of Church Street. Derek M. White, 46 of Millsboro, was operating a 2015 Jeep Wrangler westbound on SR1A just behind the bicyclist. White failed to maintain his travel lane and entered the westbound shoulder where the front of the Jeep struck the rear of the bicycle. As a result of the impact, the cyclist was thrown from her bicycle and landed in the entrance to the Henlopen Square shopping complex. The female bicyclist was treated on scene by EMS and then flown by Delaware State Police Aviation (Trooper 2) to Christiana Medical Center with serious injuries.

After the collision, the Jeep fled the scene and continued traveling westbound where it was ultimately located by a witness in the parking lot of Grand Rental Station on Hebron Road. Troopers responded to that location and took Derek White into custody without incident. A DUI investigation ensued and White was transported back to Troop 7 where he was charged with the following:

  • Vehicular Assault 1st (Felony)
  • Leaving the Scene of a Collision Resulting in Injury
  • Driving While Suspended or Revoked
  • Failure to Have Insurance Identification in Possession
  • Driving a Vehicle Under the Influence of Drug
  • Failed to remain within a single lane
  • Failure to Report a Collision Resulting in Injury or Death

Derek White was arraigned at JP3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $3,500.00 cash bond.

Traffic on Rehoboth Avenue Ext. near Church Street was impacted for approximately 2.5  hours while the collision was investigated and cleared.

*Traffic Advisory* State Police Investigating Serious Crash- Magnolia

Magnolia – Delaware State Police are on the scene of a serious motor vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 8:38 p.m., this evening, July 10, 2021, on Bay Road (SR1) northbound just south of Trap Shooters Road.

As a result of the crash, SR1 northbound has been closed and SR1 southbound is being impacted with emergency response vehicles. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes of travel. The road closure is anticipated to be lengthy, with no estimated time for a re-opening.

Delaware State Police Investigating Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision- Wilmington

Wilmington- Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred Friday morning on eastbound Kirkwood Highway (Route 2) at Milltown Road.

On July 09, 2021, at approximately 7:46 a.m., a Ford F-150 was traveling eastbound on Kirkwood Highway in the right lane from the intersection of Milltown Road.  A Ford Fusion was traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on Kirkwood Highway from the area of Woodmill Drive. For reasons unknown, its operator lost control, proceeded across the center concrete median and into the eastbound lanes of travel.  The Fusion continued traveling out of control until the passenger side of the Fusion struck the front of the F-150.

The operator of the Fusion, a 22-year-old female of Wilmington, DE, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced deceased at the scene.  Identification of the victim is pending notification to the next of kin.

The operator of F-150, a 60-year-old male of Wilmington and his front seat passenger were both transported by ambulance to the Christiana Hospital where they were admitted for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.  Both the operator and his passenger were wearing their seatbelts.

Eastbound Kirkwood Highway between Milltown Road and Woodmill Road was closed for approximately 4 hours while the collision was investigated, and roadway cleared.

State Police Arrest Two on Gun Charges During Traffic Stop

Magnolia- Delaware State Police arrested two local men following a traffic stop Thursday afternoon.

On July 8, 2021, at approximately 1:10 p.m., a trooper patrolling the area of Peachtree Run and Irish Hill Road initiated a traffic stop on a beige Toyota Corolla for an expired registration. Upon contact with the operator, Xavier T. Daniels, 22 of Milford, and passenger, Thomas R. Hoskins, 21 of Felton, a strong odor of marijuana was detected. A criminal investigation ensued, and a search of the Corolla was conducted. Located inside were a loaded Taurus G3 9mm handgun and a Crown Royal bag containing marijuana.

Both Daniels and Hoskins were taken into custody without incident and transported to Delaware State Police Troop 3.

Thomas Hoskins was charged with

  • Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited (Felony)
  • Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon (Felony)
  • Possession of Marijuana – Personal Use

Hoskins was arraigned in the Justice of the Peace Court #2 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on a $7,500.00 secured bond.

Xavier Daniels was charged with

  • Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited (Felony)
  • Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon (Felony)
  • Possession of Marijuana Other than Personal Use
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
  • Expired Tags

Daniels was arraigned in the Justice of the Peace Court #2 and released on $6,100.00 unsecured bond.

Troopers Investigate Bicycle Crash- Dewey Beach

Dewey Beach, DE- Delaware State Police continue to investigate a collision between a vehicle and two juveniles on bicycles that occurred Tuesday night in Dewey Beach.

On July 6, 2021, at approximately 9:43 p.m., Delaware State Police responded to Coastal Highway southbound in the area of St. Louis Street for a collision between a 2010 Ford Explorer and two juvenile bicyclists. The preliminary investigation has revealed the bicyclists attempted to cross the roadway and traveled into the path of the Ford Explorer. The vehicle was unable to avoid the collision and the bicyclists were struck within the left travel lane of Coastal Highway.

The 13-year-old female bicyclist from Wilmington was not wearing a helmet and was transported to an area hospital in critical condition.

The 14-year-old female bicyclist from Hockessin was not wearing a helmet and was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.

The 70-year-old operator from Bethany Beach was uninjured.

The collision remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit. Any witness to this collision should contact Sgt. Nick DeMalto by calling (302) 703-3269.

Coastal Highway in the area of the collision was closed for approximately 3 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

*UPDATE-Driver Identified* Troopers Seeking Public’s Assistance Identifying Driver Involved in Hit and Run Crash- Georgetown

Georgetown, DE- Delaware State Police have identified the driver involved in a hit and run crash in the 18000 block of Shingle Point Road as a 44-year-old Georgetown, DE, man.

On July 5, 2021, at approximately 11:00 a.m. Delaware State Police responded to a hit and run injury collision involving a truck and ATV. Through witness interviews, troopers determined a flatbed truck pulling a trailer was traveling south in the area of 18000 Shingle Point Road, Georgetown. A red Honda Recon ATV with three juvenile occupants entered Shingle Point Road from a private driveway in the same area. The flatbed truck attempted to avoid colliding with the ATV by entering the northbound lane but could not avoid striking the rear of the Honda Recon. As a result of the collision, the 12-year-old female rear passenger was ejected from the ATV and collided with the asphalt pavement of Shingle Point Road.

The 12-year-old female was transported by helicopter to an area hospital in critical condition.

The crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police. No charges have been filed at this time. Anyone with information should contact Cpl/1 W. Wyatt Bullock by calling 302-856-5850.
