Man Arrested for DUI After Crashing into State Police Vehicle on I95

Newark – The Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a crash that resulted in an arrest of a Bear area man after he collided with a stopped State Police vehicle.

At approximately 1:08 a.m. this morning, Saturday August 14, 2021, Troopers were dispatched to the area of I95 southbound just south of Salem Church Road overpass for a report of a disabled vehicle in the far right lane that had run out of gas. Two Troopers assigned to Troop 6 barrack responded to the vehicle and positioned both of their patrol Tahoes directly behind the disabled car in the right lane with their emergency lights illuminated.

At approximately 1:34 a.m., a 2018 Nissan Altima, operated by Cody J. Brownlee, 25 of Bear, was traveling southbound on I95 in the far right lane when he struck the rear of a 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe, occupied by a three-year-veteran of the Delaware State Police. The impact caused the first Tahoe to strike the rear of a 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe occupied by another three-year-veteran of the State Police and his K9 partner “Bolt.” The disabled vehicle was not affected by the collision.

The two male Troopers were transported to area hospitals by EMS where they were treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries. K9 “Bolt” was transported to an area animal hospital where he was examined and released without any apparent injuries.

Cody Brownlee (No Photo Available)  was transported to Christiana Medical Center where he was treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries. Upon his release a DUI investigation ensued and he was charged with the following:

  • 2 counts of Vehicular Assault 2nd
  • Assault 2nd on a Law Enforcement Animal
  • Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol
  • Failure to Yield/Change Lanes for Emergency Vehicles

Brownlee was arraigned at JP11 and released on his own recognizance.

The Delaware State Police would like to thank the first responders, Paramedics, Emergency Room staff at all the hospitals, and DelDOT for their assistance during this incident.

I95 southbound was closed at SR 273 for approximately 3.5 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

**Traffic Advisory** Troopers Investigating Crash on I95

Newark – Delaware State Police are on the scene of a motor vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 1:34 a.m., this morning, August 14, 2021, on I95 southbound near Salem Church Road.

As a result of the crash, all of I95 southbound is currently closed at SR 273 with emergency response vehicles on scene. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes of travel.

Delaware State Police Investigating Robbery of Gas Station- Newark

Newark – The Delaware State Police are investigating the robbery of a Newark area gas station that occurred this morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:38 a.m., Thursday, August 12, 2021, at the Exxon gas station, located at 4600 Ogletown Stanton Road, Newark, when troopers responded to a knife point robbery. Investigation determined a male suspect entered the store and confronted a male employee behind the sales counter. The suspect displayed a knife and demanded money from the register. The employee complied with demands, but was unsuccessful at opening the register. The suspect then slammed the register to the floor causing it to break open. The suspect fled out of the store with an undisclosed amount of cash, and was last seen running away from the scene northwest on Harmony Road. The employee was not injured as a result of the incident.

The suspect was described as a black male approximately 35 years old, 5’8”-6’0” tall, 185-205 lbs., wearing a light-colored shirt, jeans, a black baseball hat, and face mask.

Delaware State Police Investigate Fatal Motorcycle Crash- Milford

Milford, DE- Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred Tuesday night in Milford.

On August 10, 2021, at approximately 8:24 p.m., a 1980 Kawasaki KZI motorcycle operated by a 25-year-old Milford man was traveling southbound on Bay Road (SR 1) approaching New Wharf Road. A 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV driven by a 38-year-old female from Milford was traveling northbound on Bay Road (SR 1), in the right travel lane, just north of New Wharf Road. For unknown reasons, the motorcycle exited the east edge of Bay Road southbound, traveled south through the grass median, entered the northbound travel lanes, and directly into the path of the Hyundai. The front of the Hyundai struck the right side of the Kawasaki. After colliding, the motorcycle came to an uncontrolled stop and came to rest on its left side. The Hyundai continued traveling north, exited the east edge of Bay Road, and the front center struck a utility pole.

EMS transported the motorcycle operator to an area hospital where he died from his injuries.

The Hyundai operator and 19-year-old female front seat passenger were not injured.

The roadway was closed for approximately three hours while the collision was investigated, and the roadway cleared.

Troopers Investigating Shoplifting Turned Robbery – Wilmington

Wilmington – The Delaware State Police are investigating a shoplifting turned robbery that occurred at the Home Depot on Tuesday evening.

The incident occurred at approximately 5:20 p.m., Tuesday, August 10, 2021, at the Home Depot, located at 3600 Miller Rd., Wilmington. While inside of the store a male suspect removed a drill set from its packaging and exited without paying. The suspect was confronted by a 29-year-old male employee who attempted to stop him. To avoid apprehension, the suspect displayed a handgun towards the employee and threatened him. The suspect then fled on foot behind the rear of the business. The employee was not injured as a result of the incident.

The suspect was described as a black male, approximately 25-30 years of age, 6’0” tall, wearing a dark colored shirt, jeans and a face covering.

Delaware State Police Investigating Robbery of Liquor Store- Newark

Newark – The Delaware State Police are investigating the robbery of a Newark area liquor store that occurred last night.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:55 p.m., Sunday, August 8, 2021, at Creekside Spirits, located at 1124 Capital Trail, Newark, when troopers responded to an armed robbery. Investigation determined a male suspect entered the store and confronted a male employee while displaying a handgun. The suspect demanded money from the register and the employee complied with demands. After the first employee was unable to open a second register the suspect confronted a second employee who complied and opened the additional cash register.  The suspect obtained an undisclosed amount of cash and fled out of the back of the store. The suspect fled on foot westbound on Capital Trail towards a nearby apartment complex. The employee was not injured as a result of the incident.

The suspect was described as a black male approximately 6’1”- 6’3” tall, 270-300 lbs., wearing a light-colored shirt, dark pants and shoes, and a mask.
