Wilmington, DE- Delaware State Police investigate a fatal collision after vehicle was discovered in wooded area.

On September 8, 2021, at approximately 7:58 a.m., an excavating crew working near the intersection of DE SR 48 and Hercules Road, discovered an occupied wrecked 2016 Mercedes CLA in the wooded area. The workers notified 911 and troopers responded to the scene. The investigation determined at an unknown date and time, the vehicle was traveling westbound on DE SR 48. After it cleared the intersection with Hercules Road, it entered into a gradual curve to the right in the roadway. The operator failed to negotiate the curve and traveled across the eastbound lane of travel, south edge of the roadway, and entered into a heavily wooded area. The Mercedes eventually struck a creek embankment and overturned onto the driver side.

The operator of the vehicle was located deceased with the vehicle and has not been identified at this time. The body has been turned over to the Delaware Division of Forensic Science for a forensic analysis to be completed.

The roadway was closed for approximately 3 hours while the investigation was being conducted.

The victim was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. It is unknown when and what time the collision occurred. A computer check revealed that the vehicle was reported stolen by Wilmington (DE) Police Department on August 11, 2021 at 0926 hours.

Wilmington, DE- Delaware State Police is issuing a traffic advisory for Lancaster Pike between Old Wilmington Road and Hercules Road. The roadway will be closed for an undetermined amount of time due to a police investigation in the area. This investigation is in the early stages and additional information will be released once it becomes available.

Claymont, DE- Delaware State Police are investigating an armed carjacking that occurred this morning at a convenience store in New Castle County.

On September 7, 2021, at approximately 7:51 a.m., troopers were dispatched to a carjacking at Exxon, located at 3700 Philadelphia Pike Claymont, DE. The investigation determined the 52-year-old male victim was seated in his 2013 Acura MDX while fueling his vehicle. While seated, two male suspects approached the car from the rear and opened the victim’s door, which was left cracked open. One of the suspects pointed a handgun at the victim and demanded the keys to the vehicle. The victim refused to give the suspects his keys, resulting in the second suspect physically assaulting him. Both suspects pulled the victim from the Acura, entered it, and fled Northbound on Philadelphia Pike. The victim refused medical treatment at the scene.

The unknown suspects are described as black males in their early 20’s, wearing masks. No surveillance photographs are available.

At approximately 11:15 a.m., Delaware State Police were notified the victim’s 2013 Acura MDX was recovered in Philadelphia.

This case remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Troop 2 Criminal Investigative Unit. Georgetown, DE- Delaware State Police are investigating an assault that occurred early Monday morning that left a 24-year-old Georgetown man injured.

On September 6, 2021, at approximately 5:30 a.m., the 24-year-old male victim was walking westbound on Old Furnace Road west of Rum Bridge Road. As a vehicle drove close to the victim as he walked on the roadway, he made a hand gesture to the vehicle. After the car drove by, it turned around, and approximately three or four subjects exited. The victim attempted to remove a pocket knife he had on his person to defend himself but was assaulted by the subjects before he could protect himself. During the altercation, one of the subjects took the victim’s knife and cut him with it. They then reentered the vehicle and fled the area in an unknown direction.

The victim contacted an acquaintance and was transported to a nearby hospital by private vehicle for medical treatment. He was treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the suspect vehicle is described as a thin build, approximately 6′ tall, black male. He was wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt.

The second suspect is described as an average build, approximately 5’8″, white male. He was wearing a white t-shirt and shorts.

There is no additional suspect information.

The suspect vehicle is described as a dark-colored sedan, possibly a Kia Soul.

Newark, DE- Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred early Monday morning north of Newark.

On September 6, 2021, at approximately 5:13 a.m., a 2017 Toyota Camry operated by a 27-year-old male from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was traveling northbound on JFK Memorial Highway (I-95) in the left thru lane north of the Christiana Road (DE-273) overpass. As the vehicle entered a slight curve in the roadway, it drifted onto the left shoulder and sideswiped the concrete barrier in the center of the roadway. As the Camry continued traveling to an opening in the barrier, the vehicle’s front left struck the impact attenuator, causing it to travel out of control and come to rest in the middle of the roadway with disabling damage.

Moments later, a 2015 Honda Civic operated by a 59-year-old female from Baltimore, Maryland, was traveling northbound on I-95 in the left-center lane, approaching the disabled Camry in the roadway. The front bumper of the Civic struck the passenger side of the Camry, setting the Camry in motion again. The Civic continued traveling onto the right shoulder and came to rest against the guardrail. The collision with the Civic pushed the Camry north before it came to rest between the two left lanes.

Several minutes later, a 2020 Freightliner tractor and trailer operated by a 41-year-old male from Randallstown, Maryland, began approaching the collision scene in the left-center lane. Due to the location of the disabled vehicle in the roadway and the movement of other northbound traffic, the operator of the Freightliner was unable to avoid the traffic hazard. The right front of the tractor struck the left rear of the Toyota and set the vehicle in motion before it came to rest on the right shoulder against the guardrail.

The 27-year-old male operator and 27-year-old male passenger from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the Toyota Camry were transported to a nearby hospital for their injuries. The operator was treated and admitted for his injuries. The passenger succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. Identification is pending notification to next of kin.

The 59-year-old female operator of the Honda Civic was transported to an area hospital, where she was treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries.

The 41- year-old male operator of the Freightliner was not injured.

The three right lanes of northbound I-95 were closed for approximately 2.5 hours due to the initial crash investigation. This collision remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit. Anyone with information regarding this accident should contact Sgt. D. Rehoboth Beach, DE- Delaware State Police arrested Thomas J. Obrien, 26, of Arlington, VA, early Sunday morning after he entered the victims’ residence and was found sleeping in bed.

On September 5, 2021, at approximately 4:24 a.m., troopers were dispatched to the 38000 block of Pine Lane for a burglary in progress. The homeowner awoke and found the male suspect in a rear bedroom on the second story of the residence. When troopers arrived, the male, later identified as Thomas J. Obrien, was partially clothed and sleeping in bed. Thomas complied with the troopers’ orders and exited the bed. Thomas was taken into custody without incident, and a strong odor of alcoholic beverages was detected. The victims located Thomas’ wet clothing in the bedroom and discovered he was wearing one of the victim’s t-shirts.

Thomas was taken into custody without incident, transported to Delaware State Police Troop 7, and charged with Burglary Second Degree (Felony) and Theft. He was arraigned in the Justice of the Peace Court #3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on a $2,600.00 secured bond.

Troopers would like to remind the public always to remember to lock their doors. By remembering this important safety tip, you will make it more difficult for a burglary to occur.

Delaware State Police Investigating Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision- Dagsboro

Dagsboro- Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred Friday afternoon at the intersection of Nine Foot Road and Hickory Hill Road.

On September 3, 2021, at approximately 12:35 p.m., a 2020 Ford Explorer operated by an 88-year-old male, was traveling southbound on Hickory Hill Road, approaching the intersection of Nine Foot Road. At this time, a 2000 Isuzu NPR flatbed delivery truck, operated by a 30-year-old male, was traveling eastbound on Nine Foot Road, approaching the intersection with Hickory Hill Road. The operator of the Ford failed to stop at the intersection and entered the intersection, directly into the path of the Isuzu. The operator of the Isuzu attempted to avoid the collision, but ultimately struck the passenger side of the Ford. After impact, both vehicles exited the south east corner of the intersection where they came to rest in a standing corn field.

There were two occupants, an 88-year-old male and an 84-year-old female inside of the Ford. The 88-year-old male operator who was properly restrained and was transported to Nanticoke hospital where he was admitted in critical condition. The 84-year-old female passenger who was properly restrained was pronounced deceased at the scene. Identification is pending notification to the next of kin.

The 30-year-old male operator of the Isuzu who was properly restrained was transported to Nanticoke hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.

The intersection of Nine Foot Road and Hickory Hill Road was closed for approximately 4 hours while the crash was being investigated and the roadway cleared.

Impairment and speed do not appear to be a factor for any operator.
