Delaware State Police Investigating Shooting Incident- New Castle

New Castle, DE- Delaware State Police are investigating a shooting incident that occurred early Saturday morning in New Castle.

On September 11, 2021, at approximately 1:36 a.m., troopers were dispatched to the area of East Hazeldell Avenue and North DuPont Highway (US 13) for a shooting. The investigation determined a large crowd was in the area fighting when a 25-year-old male from New Jersey was shot multiple times. The victim was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital where he was admitted in critical condition.

There is currently no suspect or surveillance photographs available.

This case remains an active and ongoing investigation conducted by the Delaware State Police Troop 2 Criminal Investigative Unit. *UPDATE- Victim Identified* Troopers Investigate Fatal Hit & Run Pedestrian Collision- Wilmington

Wilmington, DE- Delaware State Police have identified the individual who died Wednesday morning in a fatal pedestrian collision as Jason R. Gooden, 34, of Wilmington.

On September 8, 2021, at approximately 4:14 a.m., troopers received a report of a pedestrian located in the right thru northbound lane of DE SR 100 (South DuPont Road), within the area of the intersection with Taft Avenue. The investigation determined an unknown vehicle was traveling northbound on DE SR 100 in the right thru travel lane when it struck the pedestrian, later identified as Jason R. Gooden. The vehicle continued traveling northbound towards the intersection of DE SR 100 and Faulkland Road to an unknown destination.

Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this collision. *Update* Delaware State Police Investigate Fatal Pedestrian Crash- Edgemoor

Edgemoor, DE- Delaware State Police are conducting a fatal pedestrian collision that occurred early this morning north of Wilmington.

On September 9, 2021, at approximately 6:12 a.m., a 2019 Jeep Cherokee operated by a 79-year-old male from Claymont was traveling southbound in the left-thru lane of Governor Printz Boulevard approaching the intersection of Rysing Drive. At the same time, the 65-year-old male pedestrian was walking northbound, closest to the yellow fog line within the southbound left-thru lane. As the Jeep continued in the left lane, the front left struck the pedestrian. After the collision, the operator immediately pulled over to the shoulder and called 9-1-1.

The pedestrian was not wearing any reflective clothing or carrying a lighted device. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. Identification is pending notification to next of kin.

Governor Printz Boulevard in the vicinity of Rysing Drive was closed to vehicular traffic for approximately two hours during the on-scene investigation.

This collision remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit. Anyone with information regarding the crash should contact Sgt. D. *UPDATE* Delaware State Police Investigate School Bus Crash- Milton

Milton, DE- Delaware State Police is conducting a crash investigation involving a school bus that occurred Thursday afternoon.

On September 9, 2021, at approximately 3:03 p.m., a Freightliner school bus operated by a 61-year-old female from Harbeson, was traveling westbound on Burton Road, entering a moderate right curve. Due to inattention by the operator, the vehicle crossed the north edge of the roadway, entered the soft grassy roadside and began to rotate clockwise. The bus traveled approximately 79 feet before sideswiping a tree with the front right and continued to rotate clockwise while beginning to overturn. The Freightliner then struck a second tree with the left front side, continued to overturn while striking a third tree with the left side and came to rest on its left side.

There were eight juveniles from Cape Henlopen School District on the school bus at the time of the collision.

One 11-year-old juvenile was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries, treated and released.

The operator was cited for Inattentive Driving and Failure to Drive at Speeds Appropriate for Conditions.

The roadway was closed for approximately two hours while the crashed was investigated and roadway cleared.

Delaware State Police Troop 3 Community Café- Dover

Dover, DE- On Thursday, September 9, 2021, Delaware State Police Troop 3 hosted a Community Café at the Modern Maturity Center located at 1121 Forrest Avenue, Dover. Troop 3 Administration and members of the Delaware State Police Community Outreach Unit were available to speak with and answer questions to approximately 150 people in attendance. Captain Rodney Layfield, Delaware State Police Troop 3 Commander, spoke to the community members on crime in Delaware State Police jurisdictions. Master Corporal Rickey Hargis, Delaware State Police Community Outreach Officer, also spoke at the event about the Community Outreach Unit and important safety tips. Following the presentations, Troop 3 Administration and members of the Community Outreach Unit had an opportunity to discuss important issues with those in attendance.

The Delaware State Police enjoyed having the opportunity to engage with community members and would like to thank everyone who came out. Also, thank you to the Modern Maturity Center for allowing us to hold this event at your senior center.

49th Annual Camp Barnes Benefit Stock Car Race

Delmar, DE– The 49th Annual Camp Barnes Benefit Stock Car Race will be held at the Delaware International Speedway on Saturday, October 2, 2021.  Gates will open at 2:00 p.m. with racing action beginning at 4:00 p.m. Rain date is scheduled for Sunday, October 3, 2021.  The Delaware International Speedway is located at 37854 Sussex Highway (US 13 southbound), just north of the Delaware/Maryland line.

This year’s event will feature competitors throughout the Northeast Dirt Motorsports areas.  Drivers will compete for prize money over $40,000.  Big Block-Small Block Modifieds, Super Late Models, RUSH Crate Late Models, Crate 602 Sportsman, Little Lincoln, Vintage, Mod-Lites, and Super Trucks will compete in over 100 laps of featured racing in their respective classes.

Gates open early at 2:00 p.m. with several activities and displays on hand, to include the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit and the Delaware State Police Mounted Patrol Unit.

In addition, Camp Barnes will recognize Melvin L. Joseph Construction Company of  Georgetown, Delaware at intermission for their many years of dedication to Delaware racing.

Tickets to the event are available at the speedway’s ticket booth the night of the event. Spectator’s tickets are $20 and pit tickets are $35.  Children under 10 accompanied by parent or guardian are admitted free to spectator seating.

Camp Barnes originally opened in 1948 and was named in recognition of Colonel Herbert Barnes. The camp is located next to the Assawoman Wildlife Area on Miller Creek near Bethany Beach. For six weeks in the summer, each week, 100 children ages 10-13 attend Camp Barnes with no financial burden on their parents.  They participate in outdoor activities and are taught leadership and teamwork skills.

Delaware State Police Seek Public’s Assistance with Solving 19-Year-Old Cold Case- Farmington

Farmington, DE- The Delaware State Police Homicide Unit requests the public’s assistance in solving a cold case suspicious death investigation from September 2002 in Kent County, DE. Shortly before midnight on September 9, 2002, the Farmington Fire Department responded to a wooded area off Gingerwood Drive, west of Farmington, for a vehicle fire. A deceased male victim was located in the burning vehicle, later identified as Matthew Henson, 18, from Denton, MD

Through the investigation, detectives learned Henson worked at an automotive accessories business in Delmar, DE, and did auto work with friends in the Caroline County, MD area. He also bought, sold, traded automotive stereo and television equipment and installed these accessories in vehicles. Outside of his automotive work, Henson was also a member of a Denton/Greensboro, MD, area car club. 

This year marks the 19th anniversary of Matthew Henson’s suspicious death investigation. Troopers are asking anyone with information to help solve this case to please come forward by contacting the Delaware State Police Homicide Unit by calling 302-741-2703.
