Newark- Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred last Friday, on Stanton Christiana Road (Route 7).

On Friday, October 15, 2021, at approximately 3:43 p.m., a 1977 MG MGB was traveling northbound Stanton Christiana Road (Route 7) from the intersection of Old Stanton Christiana Rd in the right lane. The vehicle began slowing and came to a stop due to traffic ahead. At the same time, a 2020 GMC Sierra pickup truck traveling northbound in the right lane directly behind the MGB, failed to stop for traffic ahead and struck the rear of the MGB. After impact the MGB was pushed across the northbound lanes and came to rest in the right lane of southbound Route 7. The GMC continued in a northwesterly direction across the northbound lanes and into the center median where it struck the crash attenuator located within the median. This second collision redirected the GMC into the northbound lanes where it overturned on its roof and came to rest.

The 51-year-old operator of the MGB, identified as John Porter of Wilmington, was transported to Christiana hospital for life-threatening injuries. At the hospital he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

The 28-year-old operator of the GMC freed himself from the overturned vehicle and fled from the scene on foot. He was later apprehended by troopers approximately half a mile from the collision scene. Once he was taken into custody, it prompted Troopers to initiate a DUI investigation. The results of the DUI investigation are pending.

Stanton Christiana Road (Route 7) was closed for approximately 3 hours while the crash was investigated, and the roadway cleared.

The investigation remains on-going. Delaware – On Saturday, October 23, 2021 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has scheduled their National Take-Back Initiative (NTBI).  This is a great opportunity for those who missed the previous events, or who have subsequently accumulated unwanted, unused, and expired prescription drugs, to safely dispose of those medications. This is an opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.  The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

DEA will also accept vaping devices and cartridges at any of its drop off locations during Take Back Day. It is important to note that DEA cannot accept devices containing lithium ion batteries. If batteries cannot be removed prior to drop-off, DEA encourages individuals to consult with stores that recycle lithium ion batteries.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.  Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.

Middletown – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate a fatal motorcycle collision that occurred early Sunday evening north of Middletown.

The crash occurred around 8:00 p.m. Sunday October 17, 2021 as a 2007 Suzuki GSX motorcycle being operated by a 20-year-old Middletown man was traveling southbound in the left thru lane of Summit Bridge Road (SR 896) just south of Victoria Drive. A 2015 Chevy Malibu, operated by a 27-year-old female from Middletown, was initially stopped in the left turn lane of SR 896 northbound to enter the Valero gas station (4434 Summit Bridge Road). At this location, a traffic signal controls vehicular traffic in and out of the Shopping Center. As the motorcycle approached the intersection, the traffic signal displayed a solid circular green light. At the same time, the Chevy Malibu initiated a left turn and drove into the path of the motorcycle.

The operator of the motorcycle then dropped the motorcycle prior to crashing into the passenger’s side of the Chevy Malibu. As a result, the motorcyclist slid under the vehicle and became trapped before the car could come to a complete stop.

The 20-year-old male motorcyclist was wearing a helmet and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The 27-year-old female operator of the Chevy Malibu was properly restrained and uninjured in the crash.

Alcohol involvement on behalf of the operator of the Chevy Malibu is unknown. Speed on behalf of the motorcyclist may have been a contributing factor as well.

Summit Bridge Road (SR896) between Bethel Church Road and Boyds Corner Road was closed for approximately 3.5 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

Middletown – Delaware State Police are on the scene of a serious motor vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 8:00 p.m., this evening, October 17, 2021, on Summit Bridge Road north of Boyds Corner Road.

As a result of the crash, Summit Bridge Road southbound is closed between Victoria Drive and Boyds Corner Road with emergency response vehicles on scene. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes of travel. The road closure is anticipated to be lengthy, with no estimated time for a re-opening.

Newark, Delaware – The Delaware State Police have arrested a Newark man with illegally possessing a gun after he was involved in a crash.

The incident began around 8:00 p.m., Saturday October 16, 2021, when Jessie Jamison, 25 of Newark, Delaware, was involved in a single vehicle collision when the 2015 Infinity Q50 he was operating on Christiana Road (SR273) veered off the road and struck a utility pole in the area of Brownleaf Road. When troopers arrived on scene, they were informed that Jamison may be in possession of a firearm that was concealed on him.

When troopers made contact with Jamison, who was being treated in an ambulance, he indicated he was in possession of a firearm in the pocket of his jacket. Troopers recovered the 9mm handgun with a fully loaded clip along with another fully loaded clip in another pocket of Jamison’s sweatshirt. A computer inquiry revealed he is prohibited from purchasing or possessing any firearm and ammunition due to a 2017 robbery conviction.

Jessie Jamison was transported back to Troop where he was charged with the following:

• Possession of a Firearm or Ammunition by a Person Prohibited – 2 counts
• Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon
• Failure to Have Insurance in Possession
• Operation of an Unregistered Motor Vehicle
• Fictitious or Cancelled Registration
• Failure to Drive at Speed Appropriate for Conditions

Jamison was arraigned at JP11 and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $15,004.00 cash bond.

Claymont – The Delaware State Police are investigating a carjacking that took place in a parking lot early Saturday evening.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:20 p.m., Saturday, October 16, 2021, in the parking lot in front of Total Wine, located at 691 Naamans Road. Two male suspects approached the 56-year-old female as she sat in the front passenger seat of her 2016 BMW X3 with the ignition running and lights on. One of the suspects then opened the passenger door and demanded her vehicle while the other suspect opened the drivers door. The victim refused to cooperate with the suspect’s demands prompting one of the suspects to threaten the use of a gun if she didn’t comply. The female victim was then pulled from the car causing her to fall to the ground. The suspects then fled in the BMW in an unknown direction.  The victim sustained minor injuries but refused medical treatment on scene.

The suspects were described as two black males, approximately 20-25 years old, both wearing dark clothing. There are no surveillance images available at this time.
