Wilmington – The Delaware State Police are investigating an attempted carjacking and carjacking that took place Wednesday night in North Wilmington.

The first incident occurred at approximately 9:03 p.m., Wednesday, January 5, 2022, in the parking lot of Wawa, located at 1702 Rocky Run Parkway, Wilmington. Investigation determined a black male suspect approached a 42-year-old male victim as he exited his vehicle in the parking lot. The suspect demanded the victim out of the vehicle and displayed a handgun tucked in his waistband. The victim pushed the suspect away but was physically assaulted by the suspect. The victim then ran towards the rear of the business. His vehicle was unable to be operated because the victim still had the key fob in his possession. The suspect then fled the scene in a gold sedan.

A short time later, at approximately 9:04 p.m., the same suspect who exited a gold sedan approached a second victim in the parking lot of the Green Turtle located at 307 Rocky Run Parkway, Wilmington. The suspect approached a 26-year-old victim, pointed a handgun towards him, and demanded the victim’s car keys. The victim complied and the suspect fled the scene in the stolen 2000 Chevrolet Malibu.

The suspect was described as a black male, approximately 5’8”-5’11” tall, 160-175 lbs., wearing all dark clothing and a mask. There are no surveillance images available at this time.

The stolen vehicle was located in the Chateau Orleans Apartments located in the 300 block of Shipley Road, Wilmington.

Felton, DE- Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred late Wednesday night in Felton.

On January 5, 2022, at approximately 11:12 p.m., a 2011 Nissan Rogue was traveling southbound on S. DuPont Hwy (US 13), in the left lane, just north of Peach Basket Rd. At the same time, a 55-year-old Harrington woman was near the center of the left lane of southbound S. DuPont Hwy, just north of Peach Basket Rd. As a result, the Nissan struck the pedestrian near the center of the left lane with its front bumper. The vehicle continued southbound a short distance and stopped in the left lane of S. DuPont Hwy, just south of Peach Basket Rd. 

The 55-year-old Harrington woman was dressed in dark clothing and was not carrying any light. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Identification is pending notification to next of kin. 

The 17-year-old driver is from Harrington, DE. She was uninjured during the collision. 

S. DuPont Hwy was closed for approximately 3 hours for the crash investigation. 

Delaware State Police Troop 3 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this collision. Lewes, DE- Delaware State Police Troop 7 is seeking the public’s assistance locating Jhareed Alexander Ayers, 21, of Sussex County, and his brother, James Robert Ayers, 19, of Lewes, who are wanted on multiple felony criminal charges.

On December 16, 2021, Jhareed and James were involved in a home invasion on Needle Dr. Lewes. A 57-year-old male was held at gunpoint and then physically assaulted during the home invasion before an undisclosed amount of money was stolen from the residence. Three juveniles were present inside the home during the incident and were not injured. The 57-year-old male received minor injuries but did not require medical attention. As a result of this incident, Jhareed is wanted for Home Invasion Burglary First Degree (Felony), Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony (Felony), Conspiracy Second Degree (Felony), Aggravated Menacing (Felony), Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited (Felony), Theft $1,500 or Greater (Felony), Assault Third Degree, and three counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

James is wanted for Home Invasion Burglary First Degree (Felony), Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony (Felony), Conspiracy Second Degree (Felony), Aggravated Menacing (Felony), Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited (Felony), Theft $1,500 or Greater (Felony), Assault Third Degree, and three counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child

On December 22, 2021, Jhareed responded to Duffy Street, Rehoboth Beach, attempting to locate an acquaintance. When unsuccessful, he pointed a firearm at an individual outside and demanded they help him find the person. When Jhareed was unsuccessful in locating the individual, he fled the area. The victim was not injured. As a result of the incident, Jhareed is wanted for Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony (Felony), Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited (Felony), Offensive Touching, and Aggravated Menacing (Felony). 

Jhareed also has an active capias for Failure to Pay out of Sussex County Court of Common Pleas.

James has an active capias for Failure to Appear out of Sussex County Court of Common Pleas.

Felton, DE- Delaware State Police are issuing a traffic advisory for southbound South DuPont Hwy, Felton. Troopers are currently investigating a serious injury crash involving a pedestrian. As a result of the collision, southbound South DuPont Hwy. in the area of Peach Basket Road will be closed for an extended period of time. Motorists are urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes of travel. This investigation is in the early stages and additional information will be released once it becomes available.

Newark- Delaware State Police have arrested four juveniles, two males (17-year-old of Wilmington and 16-year-old of Newark) and two females (13-year-old and 14-year-old of New Castle), for robbery and related charges following a carjacking that occurred Monday afternoon.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:25 p.m., Monday, January 3, 2021, in the parking lot of Acme, located at 1 University Plaza, Newark. Investigation determined two male suspects approached a 44-year-old female victim and her 15-year-old son while they returned to her black Dodge sedan in the parking lot. One of the suspects forcibly removed the victim’s purse while the second suspect entered the vehicle from the passenger door and physically assaulted the juvenile victim. After a brief struggle with both victims, the suspects who implied they had a weapon, were able to get into the driver and front passenger seat. The suspect operating the stolen vehicle put the vehicle in reverse which threw both victims to the ground. The victims were transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.

Through investigative means, troopers quickly identified the two male juvenile suspects and obtained arrest warrants. On January 4, 2021, troopers conducted surveillance and located the stolen vehicle in front of a residence on Mackay Lane, Newark. A perimeter was established around the residence and troopers were successfully able to talk the suspects outside where they were taken into custody without incident. Also taken into custody at the residence were two female juveniles who were determined to be accomplices in the carjacking.

Additionally, investigators linked the two juvenile males to a second carjacking that occurred on January 1, 2021, at approximately 2:41 p.m., at the BJ’s Wholesale Store located at 100 Pencader Plaza, Newark. Investigation determined the two juvenile suspects approached a 58-year-old female victim of Middletown, DE, in the parking lot, implied they had a weapon, and demanded her car keys. The suspects then forcibly removed the victims purse from her possession which contained the key fob to the vehicle and the suspects fled in the stolen tan Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The Jeep has not been recovered at this time

The four juveniles were transported to Troop 2 where they were charged with the following crimes:

Two Juvenile males

• Robbery 1st Degree (Felony)- 3 Counts
• Conspiracy 2^nd Degree (Felony)- 2 Counts
• Wearing a Disguise During the Commission of a Felony (Felony) – 2 Counts

The two juvenile males were arraigned in the Justice of the Peace Court #11 and committed to the New Castle County Detention Center on $187,000 cash bond.

• Robbery 1st Degree (Felony)
• Conspiracy 2^nd Degree (Felony)

The two juvenile females were arraigned in the Justice of the Peace Court #11 and committed to the New Castle County Detention Center on $42,000 secured bond.

Ellendale, DE- Delaware State Police investigate the roof collapse of a chicken house that resulted in a 12-year-old female being injured. 

On January 4, 2022, at approximately 3:10 p.m., Delaware State Police were dispatched to the 17000 block of Maple Branch Rd., Ellendale, for a reported structure collapse. The investigation determined at approximately 3:00 p.m., a 17-year-old male, a 12-year-old female, a 14-year-old female, an 11-year-old female, a 20-year-old female, and an adult male were working in the chicken houses located on the property. When all individuals entered one of the chicken houses, the 17-year-old male observed the food and water lines sagging. He began telling everyone inside to get out when the roof collapsed. All of the individuals inside escaped without injury except the two youngest females. The 17-year-old male and the other male began digging through the debris when they located the 12-year-old female pinned under the collapsed roof. They were able to safely remove her from the collapsed chicken house, and EMS transported her to a nearby hospital in stable condition. The 11-year-old female was not trapped in the fallen debris but was also transported by EMS to a nearby hospital, where she was discharged after being medically cleared.  

This case remains under investigation by Delaware State Police Troop 4 Criminal Investigations Unit, but preliminary findings indicate the roof collapse resulted from snow on the roof. 

Delaware State Police would like to thank the Ellendale Volunteer Fire Department and Sussex County Technical Rescue Team for their assistance rescuing the victims in the chicken house roof collapse yesterday. Additionally, our thoughts remain with the victims and their family and hope for a speedy recovery.

New Castle– Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred Sunday afternoon on North DuPont Highway (Route 13) at the intersection with East Franklin Avenue.

On Sunday, January 2, 2021, at approximately 3:03 p.m., a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu was traveling northbound on Route 13 approaching the intersection with East Franklin Avenue.  The Malibu entered the right shoulder with the intent to make a right turn onto eastbound East Franklin Avenue. At this time, a 2004 Toyota Corolla was within the left turn lane of southbound Route 13 and proceeded to make a left turn across all northbound lanes of travel, attempting to turn onto eastbound East Franklin Avenue.  The Corolla entered directly into the path of Malibu, and subsequently the front of the Malibu struck the passenger side of Corolla. The force of the impact forced both vehicles in a northeasterly direction where they eventually came to final rest. 

The 28-year-old female operator of the Malibu was transported by ambulance to Christiana Hospital where she was treated and released.

The 47-year-old operator of the Corolla was not wearing a seatbelt and was transported by ambulance to the Christiana Hospital where he was admitted for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The 40-year-old male rear left rear seat passenger of the Corolla was not wearing a seatbelt and was airlifted by Delaware State Police Aviation to Christiana Hospital for serious, life-threatening injuries.  The victim succumbed to his injuries several hours later and was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Identification of the victim is pending notification to next of kin.

There were two additional passengers in the Corolla who were transported to Christiana hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation remains on-going.
