Delaware State Police Announces New Chaplain

The Delaware State Police is proud to present its newest Chaplain, Rabbi Nick Renner

 

Rabbi Nick Renner

 

Rabbi Renner has been the Associate Rabbi and Director of Lifelong Learning at Congregation Beth Shalom, located in Wilmington, since July 2021. He is originally from Chapel Hill, North Carolina and studied at Duke University. While attending Duke University, he earned the International Comparative Studies (ICS) Distinguished Thesis Award in 2005 after completing his thesis on the Israeli disengagement from Gaza. Rabbi Renner graduated with a bachelor’s degree in International Comparative Studies (ICS) with the honors distinction of cum laude in 2007. He earned a Master of Arts in Hebrew Letters and the title of Rabbi from Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in 2014.

Rabbi Renner began his career as an Assistant Rabbi at Kehillat Israel Reconstructionist Congregation of Pacific Palisades in California from August 2014 until April 2018. During this time, he serviced his community by performing his rabbinical duties at baby-naming ceremonies, weddings, ‘coming-of-age’ ceremonies, and funerals. Rabbi Renner also worked with the Israel Matters Committee and taught sessions on contemporary Israel. In May of 2018, he began his academic career at the University of Delaware Hillel as the Senior Jewish Educator. While in this position, he worked with undergraduate students, the religious life programming board, and Hillel’s engagement internship. He also taught academic courses in University of Delaware’s Jewish Studies program.

For more than twenty years, Rabbi Renner has played guitar and bass in various musical groups encompassing the genres of rock, funk, blues, hip-hop, jazz, and folk. He has also played live and in-studio performances in North Carolina, Philadelphia, West Los Angeles, Delaware, and Netanya, Israel. Rabbi Renner resides in Delaware with his wife, Kimmy, and their child, Isaac.

Delaware State Police welcomes Rabbi Renner with open arms. We are confident that he will strengthen the inspirational leadership within our agency.

Delaware State Police Investigate Shooting Inside Bar

Delaware State Police are investigating a shooting that occurred inside of a Wilmington area bar early this morning.

On October 19, 2022, at approximately 12:12 a.m., troopers responded to the Overtime Bar and Grill, located at 105 Kirkwood Square, Wilmington, regarding a shooting that had just occurred. The ensuing investigation revealed that a 26-year-old male victim from New Castle, Delaware had a verbal altercation with a group of individuals inside of the bar. During the altercation, one suspect displayed a handgun and fired multiple rounds at the victim. The victim was struck one time in the shoulder.

The victim transported to an area hospital where he was medically treated and released. No other individuals were injured.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male 20-25 years-old, 5’3”-5’6” tall, 140 lbs. with a beard. There are no surveillance images available at this time.

The Delaware State Police Troop 2 Criminal Investigation Unit continues to investigate this case. Delaware State Police Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Collision

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian that occurred in the Newark area on Tuesday night.

On October 18, 2022, at approximately 11:46 p.m., a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe, operated by a 49-year-old male was traveling northbound on Ott’s Chapel Road and turned left onto West Chestnut Hill Road traveling westbound. At the time, a pedestrian had entered the westbound lane of West Chestnut Hill Road from an unknown location. The Tahoe veered to the right in attempt to avoid the collision, but the front right of the Tahoe ultimately struck the pedestrian. The area of the collision was dark and not well lit. The pedestrian was wearing dark clothing and was not carrying a light at the time of the collision.

The 67-year-old male pedestrian of Newark, DE was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Identification of the victim is pending notification of the next of kin.

No other vehicles were involved in this incident and no other injuries were reported. West Chestnut Hill Road was closed for approximately three hours while the collision was investigated, and the roadway cleared.

Delaware State Police Investigating Robbery of Dollar Store

The Delaware State Police are investigating a robbery that occurred at a Dollar General located in Lincoln, DE.

The incident occurred on Monday, October 17, 2022, at approximately 9:55 p.m., when troopers were dispatched to the Dollar General located at 18380 Johnson Road, Lincoln, for a report of a robbery. Upon arrival, it was learned that two male suspects both displaying handguns approached a male and a female employee and escorted them towards the cash register while demanding money. The employees complied and the suspects fled the store with an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspects were last seen entering a white sedan and fleeing the scene.

The victims were not injured during the incident.

The first suspect was described as black male 5’10” approximately 150 lbs., wearing all dark clothing and a mask.

Delaware State Police Investigating Fatal Collision

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred in the Wilmington area on Sunday morning.

On October 16, 2022, at approximately 11:45 a.m., an Aprilia motorcycle, operated by a 27-year-old male from Pennsylvania, was traveling southbound on Brandywine Creek Road from the area of Beaver Dam Road. As the motorcycle was traveling southbound, it entered a left curve. The motorcycle lost control and drifted off the west edge of the roadway. The motorcycle was unable to regain control and struck a large rock.

The operator of the motorcycle, who was wearing a helmet during the collision, was transported to an area hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Identification of the victim is pending notification to the next of kin.

Brandywine Creek Road was closed between Beaver Dam Road and Ramsey Road for approximately 3 hours while the roadway was cleared, and the collision was investigated.

Delaware State Police are currently on the scene of a serious motor vehicle collision on Brandywine Creek Road in the Wilmington area. As a result, Brandywine Creek Road is closed in both directions in the area of Ramsey Road for an extended period. Motorists are urged to seek alternate routes of travel to avoid delays. This collision is in the early stages of the investigation. Additional details will be released once they become available.

Delaware State Police Investigating Fatal Collision

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred in the Middletown area on early Saturday morning.

On October 15, 2022, at approximately 4:23 a.m., a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 was traveling southbound on South Dupont Highway (Route 13). At the time, a 2018 Ford F-150 was traveling northbound on Route 13 within the left lane of travel and was proceeding north from the intersection with Hyetts Corner Road.  In the area north of the Route 1 overpass the Dodge, for unknown reasons, left the roadway and entered into the grass median.  The Dodge proceeded across the grass median and entered into the left lane of Route 13 northbound, directly into the path of the Ford. The Dodge struck the front and driver side of Ford for a point of impact.  The Dodge then came to rest within the left lane of northbound Route 13 and the Ford came to a rest within the right shoulder of northbound Route 13.

The 24-year-old operator of the Dodge and 26-year-old front seat passenger were not wearing their seatbelts.  Both occupants sustained serious injuries and were transported to an area hospital. Impairment on part of the operator is pending further investigation.

The 67-year-old operator of the Ford, who was wearing his seatbelt, was pronounced deceased at the scene of the collision.  Identification of the victim is pending notification to the next of kin.

Route 13 was closed for approximately four hours while the collision was investigated, and the roadway was cleared.
