Delaware State Police are investigating a shooting incident that occurred in the Hartly area on Friday night.

On Friday, November 25, 2022, at approximately 8:17 p.m., troopers responded to the 2500 block of Fords Corner Road, Hartly regarding a reported shooting. A 41-year-old male victim present at the residence heard a series of approximately 6-8 gunshots, one of which struck his house. The ensuing investigation revealed that the residence had been shot by one round that entered into an empty bedroom. The victim was not injured during this incident.

At this time there is no suspect information or surveillance images available.

The Delaware State Police Troop 3 Criminal Investigative Unit continues to investigate this case. Troopers are asking anyone who witnessed this incident to please contact Detective B. Delaware State Police Troop 5 and Seaford Police Department will be hosting a Community Café at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, November 28, 2022. The event will be held at Smith’s Café, located at 22939 Sussex Highway in Seaford. The Community Café will have Troop 5 Administration, Seaford Police Department Administration, and Community Engagement Officers in attendance to meet and interact with members of the public. This Community Café is often referred to as “Coffee with a Cop” by other police agencies. It is being held in an effort to strengthen the relationship between the Delaware State Police and the communities that we proudly serve.

The Delaware State Police are investigating the attempted robbery of a Newark area gas station that occurred Wednesday afternoon.

The incident occurred on November 23, 2022, at approximately 3:14 p.m., at the Shell gas station, located at 1148 Christiana Road, Newark. A male suspect entered the business and confronted an employee at the sales counter. The suspect displayed a knife and demanded money. The employee did not comply and ran out of the store. The suspect then fled the scene without obtaining any money or property and was seen traveling in a light-colored sedan westbound on Route 273. The employee was not injured during the incident.

The suspect was described as a black male, in his early 20’s approximately, 6’ tall, 200 lbs., wearing dark clothing and a mask.

No surveillance images are available at this time.

On November 23, 2022, at approximately 8:10 p.m., a 2005 Honda Civic was traveling northbound on North Old State Road south of Haflinger Road at a high rate of speed. The driver lost control of the vehicle and exited the east edge of the roadway. The vehicle then struck a Delmarva Power utility pole.

The driver, a 21-year-old male of Houston, Delaware, was not wearing a seatbelt during the collision. He was transported to an area hospital for life-threatening injuries. An 18-year-old male passenger of Houston, Delaware, was wearing a seatbelt during the collision. He was transported to an area hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The roadway was closed for approximately three hours while the collision was being investigated and cleared.

The Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues investigating this incident. Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred on Horsey Church Road in the Laurel area yesterday morning.

On November 22, 2022, at approximately 7:42 a.m., a 2013 International dump truck towing a flatbed trailer, was traveling eastbound on Horsey Church Road east of Chandler Road. At the time, a 2002 Ford Crown Victoria was traveling westbound on Horsey Church Road in the same vicinity. As the vehicles approached one another, the Crown Victoria failed to maintain his lane and entered the eastbound lane of travel. The front center of the Crown Victoria struck the front center of the dump truck.

The 29-year-old male operator of the Crown Victoria from Salisbury, MD was not properly restrained and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Identification of the victim is pending notification to the next of kin.

The 48-year-old male operator of the dump truck from Salisbury, MD was properly restrained and transported to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. There were four other passengers in the dump truck. All were transported to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Horsey Church Road was closed for approximately five hours while the collision was investigated, and the roadway was cleared.

Delaware State Police are investigating a shooting that occurred in the Millsboro area on Monday night.

On November 21, 2022, at approximately 8:43 p.m., troopers responded to the 30000 block of Ayers Lane regarding a shooting. When troopers arrived, they discovered that the residence had been shot numerous times with an unknown firearm. The homeowner sustained a gunshot wound to the upper torso and was transported to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. No one else was harmed during this incident. The circumstances and motive surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.

Delaware State Police have arrested a Philadelphia man for using illegally skimmed payment cards at a Newark gas station yesterday afternoon.

On November 20, 2022, at approximately 3:38 p.m., troopers responded to the Sunoco located at 520 JFK Memorial Highway regarding a suspicious subject who had been observed using numerous payment cards at a gas pump. Troopers contacted 28-year-old Edward Whitefield-Dukes, who was filling a large fuel tank in the bed of his rental pickup truck. While speaking with troopers, Whitefield-Dukes discarded a credit card reader and writer into a nearby trashcan. Troopers recovered the device and Whitefield-Dukes was taken into custody at the scene without incident. A search of Whitefield-Dukes’ truck led to the discovery of numerous Wawa gift cards that were encoded with various credit card numbers from different financial institutions that were not associated with Wawa.

Whitefield-Dukes was transported to Troop 6 and charged with the following crimes:

• Possession of a Payment Card Scanning Device (Felony)
• Possession of Instruments Facilitating Identity Theft (Felony) – 10 counts
• Theft Under $1,500

Whitefield-Dukes was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court # 11 and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $42,000 cash bond.

The Delaware State Police would like to warn the public about leaving their cars unattended and unlocked while idling.

Delaware State Police Criminal Investigative Units have recently been handling numerous vehicle thefts occurring throughout the State of Delaware.  A large majority of the thefts have occurred at gas station and convenience store parking lots where a vehicle was left unattended, idling, and unlocked. Victims often leave their car running while they go into a store to make a purchase. Investigations show that suspects will specifically look for and target unattended vehicles idling in parking lots.

Additionally, Delaware law states: (Title 21, § 4182) Unattended motor vehicle.  No person driving or in charge of a motor vehicle shall permit it to stand unattended without first stopping the engine, locking the ignition, removing the key and effectively setting the brake thereon. For a first offense, a fine of $25.00 – $75.00 can be imposed.
