Troopers Arrest Store Employee for Felony Theft

On Wednesday the Delaware State Police arrested 27-year-old Derrick Whitehead of Townsend, Delaware for felony internal theft after it was discovered that he was stealing money from his employer.

On February 22, 2023, at approximately 6:37 p.m., a trooper responded to the ShopRite grocery store located at 1101 Governors Place in Bear regarding an internal theft. The trooper was informed that one of the store’s loss prevention associates had been stealing money that had been collected from the cash registers. The investigation revealed that the employee, identified as Derrick Whitehead, had stolen over $5,000 from ShopRite throughout the month of February 2023.

Troopers contacted Whitehead at the store and took him into custody without incident. Whitehead was taken to Troop 2 and charged with one count of felony Theft. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11 and released on $2,000 unsecured bond.

Troopers Arrest Man on Gun and Drug Charges Following Traffic Stop

The Delaware State Police have arrested 48-year-old Kevin Walker of Dover, Delaware on drug dealing and firearm charges following a traffic stop that occurred yesterday evening in Camden.

On February 22, 2023, at approximately 6:20 p.m., a trooper on patrol observed a black 2020 Chevrolet Camaro traveling southbound on South Dupont Highway south of Dover. The trooper recognized the driver as Kevin Walker, and a computer check showed that Walker had a suspended driver’s license. Troopers stopped Walker on East Street south of East Camden Wyoming Avenue and asked him to exit the car. A drug-certified canine then conducted a free-air sniff of the Camaro’s exterior, and the dog alerted to the presence of an odor of narcotics. A probable cause search of the car led to the discovery of the following:

  • Approximately 42.90 grams of crack cocaine
  • Approximately 81.60 grams of methamphetamine
  • Approximately 655 baggies containing approximately 4.585 grams of suspected heroin
  • Approximately 41.08 grams of marijuana
  • Approximately 1.34 grams of cocaine
  • Approximately twelve Suboxone strips
  • Approximately 35 prescription pills of various types
  • A concealed and loaded 9-millimeter handgun
  • Drug paraphernalia

A computer check of Walker showed that Walker is a convicted felon prohibited from possessing firearms.

Walker was taken to Troop 3 and charged with the following crimes:

  • Possession With Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance in a Tier 3 Quantity (Felony) – 2 counts
  • Possession With Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance in a Tier 2 Quantity (Felony)
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited (Felony)
  • Possession of Ammunition by a Person Prohibited (Felony)
  • Possession With Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance (Felony) – 7 counts
  • Carrying a Concealed Firearm (Felony)
  • Possession of a Firearm While Possessing a Controlled Substance (Felony)
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
  • Driving While Suspended / Revoked

Walker was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $243,500 cash bond.

State Police Arrest Woman on Gun and Drug Dealing Charges

The Delaware State Police have arrested 40-year-old Trillian Reidy of Camden-Wyoming, Delaware on drug dealing and weapon charges following the execution of a search warrant on Tuesday.

On February 21, 2023, at approximately 8:55 p.m., troopers concluded a narcotics investigation into Trillian Reidy and executed a search warrant on a residence on the 3000 block of Mud Mill Road in Camden-Wyoming. Troopers entered the home and found Reidy hiding in a closet. She was subsequently taken into custody without incident. A search of the home led to the discovery of the following:

  • Approximately 479 baggies containing approximately 3.353 grams of suspected heroin
  • Approximately 33.02 grams of methamphetamine
  • Six Xanax pills
  • Approximately 0.8 grams of MDMA
  • Over $850 in suspected drug dealing proceeds
  • Various items of drug paraphernalia
  • A .25 caliber handgun

Computer checks showed that Reidy is a convicted felon prohibited from possessing firearms.

Reidy was taken to Troop 3 and charged with the following crimes:

  • Possession With Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance in a Tier 3 Quantity (Felony)
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited (Felony)
  • Possession With Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance (Felony) – 2 counts
  • Possession of a Substance in a Tier 2 Quantity (Felony)
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance – 2 counts
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

Reidy was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 7 and committed to Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution on $21,800 secured bond.

Delaware State Police Hosting 50th Annual Trooper Youth Week This Summer

The Delaware State Police and the American Legion are sponsoring the 50th Annual Trooper Youth Week from Monday, June 19 to Friday, June 23, 2023. The 50th Annual Trooper Youth Week comes in the same calendar year as the Division celebrates its 100 years of service to the citizens of the First State.

Trooper Youth Week is a week-long live-in Academy program designed to give high school students who are sincerely interested in law enforcement an opportunity to experience the rigors of training that police officers receive at the DSP Academy in Dover. The program is both mentally and physically challenging.

The students are selected from a competitive pool and are required to participate in daily physical training as well as a variety of law enforcement-related classroom instruction. Daily physical training will include outdoor running, push-ups, and sit-ups, among other exercises. The program is facilitated by uniform troopers assigned to the DSP Training Academy and school resource officers from across the State.

High school seniors, juniors, and sophomores are all encouraged to apply. Applications can be downloaded directly from our Trooper Youth Week website or by contacting a school resource officer at their respective school. There is no cost to the student to attend this training.

The deadline for turning in the application is 4 p.m. on Friday, May 19, 2023.

State Police Investigating Man for Home Improvement Fraud

The Delaware State Police will be charging 32-year-old Michael Tyler Joseph of Fruitland, Maryland for felony Home Improvement Fraud when he is extradited to Delaware from Maryland. Joseph is currently incarcerated in Maryland, and he is wanted in Delaware for defrauding a family out of over $23,000 throughout the past year.

On January 6, 2023, an Ocean View family contacted the State Police to report a home improvement fraud. Detectives learned that Michael Tyler Joseph, owner of Elite Hardscapes LLC, had previously agreed to build an addition onto their home, with construction beginning in January 2022. The family paid Joseph over $23,000 throughout the year for the project, but the work was not completed, the contract was not fulfilled, and the money was never reimbursed.

There is currently an active felony warrant for Home Improvement Fraud for Joseph, who may have used other company names in addition to Elite Hardscapes LLC. The warrant will be executed when he is extradited to Delaware. The Delaware State Police Troop 4 Financial Crimes Unit continues to investigate similar cases involving Michael Tyler Joseph. Detectives are asking anyone who may have been defrauded in a similar manner to please contact the Financial Crimes Unit by calling 302-856-5850. Troopers Seek Public’s Help With Locating Wanted Man

The Delaware State Police are seeking the public’s help with locating 33-year-old Floyd Smith of Hartly, Delaware after he fled from troopers last night. Smith struck a State Police vehicle with his car and nearly hit four troopers with his vehicle as they were attempting to take him into custody.

On February 19, 2023, at approximately 10:16 p.m., troopers responded to a residence on the 2000 block of Judith Road in Hartly after they received a call that Floyd Smith was at the home. Smith had two active warrants for his arrest, which included a warrant for Violation of Probation and a second for felony theft. Troopers arrived and saw Smith sitting in a running tan Ford Fusion with the doors locked. Smith refused to exit the vehicle and instead began reversing out of the driveway, despite four troopers standing close to his car. Smith then struck a State Police vehicle with his car before driving through the yard and fleeing from the area at a high rate of speed. Neither Smith nor his vehicle were located and his whereabouts are unknown.

Smith is described as a white male, approximately 5’07” tall, weighing approximately 200 pounds, with green eyes and brown hair. He has a script tattoo on his right hand that says “Lost” and a script tattoo on his left hand that says “Soul,” along with tattoos on both of his arms. He is known to frequent the Denton, Hartly, and Felton areas.

State Police Investigating Early-Morning Shooting

The Delaware State Police are investigating a shooting that occurred early this morning in Seaford that left one victim suffering from a gunshot wound.

On February 19, 2023, at approximately 3:37 a.m., troopers responded to a residence on the 26000 block of Sussex Highway regarding a shooting that had just occurred. Troopers secured the scene and learned that an 18-year-old man from Seaford had been taken to an area hospital for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his leg after he was shot during a large party at the residence. Detectives assumed the investigation and located multiple shell casings on the property. No suspect has been identified and the circumstances and motive surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.

The Delaware State Police Troop 4 Criminal Investigations Unit continues to investigate this case. Troopers are asking anyone who witnessed this incident to contact Detective P. State Police Arrest Man for Drug Dealing

The Delaware State Police have arrested 31-year-old Kevann McCasline of New Castle, Delaware on numerous drug dealing charges following a narcotics investigation that began in December.

In December 2022, the Delaware State Police initiated an investigation into Kevann McCasline after troopers received information that he was actively selling narcotics from his residence. On the morning of February 17, 2023, troopers executed a search warrant on McCasline’s property on Freedom Trail in New Castle, and McCasline was taken into custody after he initially resisted arrest. A search of the property led to the discovery of the following:

  • Approximately 52 grams of crack cocaine
  • Approximately 35 grams of methamphetamine
  • Approximately 84 wax bags containing approximately 0.588 grams of suspected heroin
  • Approximately 10 grams of marijuana
  • Various items of drug paraphernalia

McCasline was taken to Troop 2 and charged with the following crimes:

  • Possession With Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance in a Tier 3 Quantity (Felony) – 2 counts
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance in a Tier 3 Quantity (Felony) – 2 counts
  • Operating a Clandestine Laboratory (Felony)
  • Possession With Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance (Felony)
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Possession of Marijuana

McCasline was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 2 and was committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $271,001 cash bond.

Traffic Stop Results in Gun and Drug Arrest

The Delaware State Police have arrested 20-year-old Jeremiah Weatherspoon of Magnolia, Delaware on gun and drug charges following a traffic stop that occurred yesterday morning.

On February 18, 2023, at approximately 9:00 a.m., a trooper on patrol observed a silver Honda sedan traveling southbound on South Dupont Highway in Dover. The trooper noticed that the driver failed to stop for a red turn arrow as he turned left onto Walnut Shade Road from South Dupont Highway. The trooper stopped the car and contacted the driver and only occupant, identified as Jeremiah Weatherspoon. The trooper smelled the odor of marijuana and Weatherspoon failed to show valid proof of insurance for the Honda. Weatherspoon was asked to exit the car, and a probable cause search of the vehicle led to the discovery of approximately 29.32 grams of marijuana and a concealed and loaded handgun. Weatherspoon is 20 years old and is prohibited from possessing a firearm and/or ammunition.

Weatherspoon was taken to Troop 3 and charged with the following crimes.

  • Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited (Felony)
  • Possession of Ammunition by a Person Prohibited (Felony)
  • Carrying a Concealed Firearm (Felony)
  • Possession of Marijuana
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
  • Traffic violations

Weatherspoon was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 7 and released on $15,300 unsecured bond.
