State Police Investigating Robbery of Delivery Truck Driver

The Delaware State Police are investigating the armed robbery of a delivery truck driver that occurred yesterday evening in Wilmington.

On March 20, 2023, at approximately 6:54 p.m., a 40-year-old truck driver parked his delivery truck behind the Wawa located at 4555 New Linden Hill Road and began unloading merchandise into the store. While the victim was in the store, one unknown male suspect entered the back of the truck and began stealing numerous cases of cigarettes while a second unknown male loaded the stolen items into a dark gray Kia Soul. When the driver walked back outside, the second suspect pointed a handgun at the driver and told him to back away. The driver complied, and the suspects fled the area.

The truck driver was not harmed. Neither suspect has been identified, and surveillance video and images are not yet available.

State Police Investigating Roadside Robbery

The Delaware State Police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred on State Route 1 in the New Castle area on Saturday evening.

On March 18, 2023, at approximately 9:42 p.m., a 35-year-old man and a 50-year-old man stopped their 2020 black Honda Odyssey minivan on the shoulder on southbound State Route 1 in the area of the School House Road overpass to change a tire. While they were stopped on the shoulder, both victims were approached by two unknown black males who had pulled over behind them. One of the suspects pointed a gun at the 50-year-old man, punched him in the stomach, and stole an undisclosed amount of cash from the victim. Both suspects then fled from the scene in a dark-colored SUV.

The victim who was punched did not need emergency medical attention. Neither suspect has been identified and there are no video or camera images available.

Delaware State Police Continue Their 100th Anniversary Celebration with Centennial Tribute

Legislative Mall

The Delaware State Police are continuing their 100th Anniversary Celebration with a Centennial Tribute. The ceremony will occur on April 28, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. on the Legislative Mall located at 411 Legislative Avenue in Dover. There will be elected officials in attendance who will speak and help commemorate the DSP’s 100 years of service to our citizens and visitors. This event will occur rain or shine. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be held indoors at Legislative Hall.

There will be parking available on Water Street and the surrounding area. A media staging area will be available on Legislative Mall close to the intersection of Legislative Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

The event is open to the public and all are welcomed and encouraged to attend.

Troopers Arrest Man for Felony DUI Following Pursuit

The Delaware State Police have arrested 48-year-old Rodney Hearn of Georgetown, Delaware for felony DUI and other offenses following a vehicle pursuit that occurred early this morning in Bridgeville.

On March 20, 2023, at approximately 1:23 a.m., a trooper on patrol observed a silver 2004 Kia Spectra turn left onto Coverdale Road from Mill Park Drive. The driver of the Kia failed to properly signal, and the trooper attempted to stop the car on Coverdale Road at Seashore Highway. However, the driver did not stop on command and began speeding away northbound on Chaplains Chapel Road. The trooper pursued the Kia until it came to a stop on Tuckers Road west of Oak Road. The driver, identified as Rodney Hearn, was subsequently taken into custody without incident. Hearn showed signs of impairment and was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia and approximately .38 grams of crack cocaine that he had attempted to destroy. Computer checks showed that Hearn has three prior convictions for DUI.

Hearn was taken to Troop 5 and charged with the following offenses:

  • 4th Offense DUI (Felony)
  • Disregarding a Police Officer Signal (Felony)
  • Tampering With Physical Evidence (Felony)
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
  • Numerous traffic violations

Hearn was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $15,211 cash bond.

The Delaware State Police is aware of a social media post that threatens the safety of Gunning Bedford Middle School on March 20, 2023. The DSP takes threats to any school very seriously and has initiated proactive safety measures to ensure the safety and security of all students and staff. Delaware State Police Investigating Homicide

The Delaware State Police is investigating a homicide that occurred this morning in Newark.

On March 19, 2023, at approximately 5:53 a.m., New Castle County Police Department responded to a possible traffic accident on Old County Road. When officers arrived, they located an adult male victim suffering from a gunshot wound inside a vehicle. An examination of the scene revealed that the shooting occurred near the 2400 block of Old County Road, which is within the jurisdiction of the Delaware State Police. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The victim’s identification is being withheld until notification is made to the family. No suspect information is available at this time.
