Delaware State Police Investigating Single Vehicle Fatal Collision

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal single motor vehicle collision that occurred in the Wilmington area early this morning.

On April 11, 2023, at approximately 1:31 a.m., a 2007 Chevrolet Impala operated by a 25-year-old female of Wilmington, DE, was traveling southbound I-95 in the left middle lane approaching the overpass for Route 141. For unknown reasons, the Impala veered to the right and crossed through the right middle and right lane. During this time the Impala began to rotate in a clockwise direction. The Impala then entered the right shoulder where the front left of the vehicle struck the guardrail. The collision caused the guardrail to become detached and penetrated the driver’s side of the vehicle.

The 25-year-old female operator of the Impala who was not wearing a seatbelt was pronounced deceased at the scene. Identification of the victim is pending notification to the next of kin.

The 28-year-old female passenger who was not wearing a seatbelt was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries.

The three right lanes of southbound Interstate 95 were closed for approximately 5 hours while the crash was investigated, and the roadway was cleared.

Delaware State Police Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Collision

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian that occurred in the Wilmington area last Wednesday night.

On April 5, 2023, at approximately 9:23 p.m., a pedestrian later identified as Joshua A. Stepler, 25, of Felton, DE was walking south on South Heald Street towards the intersection with Rogers Road.  Stepler was initially walking within the southbound lanes of travel and crossed the solid, double yellow line and into the northbound lanes of travel.  Stepler continued walking in a southerly direction within the left-through lane of northbound South Heald Street. At the time, a 2014 Kia Sorento was traveling northbound in the left lane of South Heald Street from the intersection with Rogers Road. The front of the Kia then struck Stepler.

Stepler was transported to an area hospital in critical condition. On April 8, 2023, Stepler succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. Stepler was not wearing any type of reflective or bright clothing and was not carrying any kind of lighted device. Impairment is suspected.

The 24-year-old operator of the Kia who was wearing her seatbelt, did not sustain any injuries from the crash. The operator’s headlights were illuminated at the time of the collision and impairment is not being considered a factor.

South Heald Street between Rogers Road and Garasches Lane was closed for approximately 3 hours while the crash was investigated and the roadway cleared.

*Update* Delaware State Police Investigating Shooting at the Christiana Mall

The Delaware State Police are continuing to investigate a shooting at the Christiana Mall on Saturday night.

On April 8, 2023, at approximately 6:43 p.m., the Delaware State Police responded to the Christiana Mall for a reported shooting at the food court entrance. Investigation revealed that three male suspects confronted an 18-year-old male victim as he was exiting the food court. The three suspects began to physically assault the victim, at which point the victim’s two friends entered the physical altercation and began fighting with the suspects. During the fight, one suspect removed a handgun from his waistband and began firing multiple rounds. The first victim and his friend, a 16-year-old male were both struck by three rounds in the torso and the lower extremities. The suspects then fled the scene.

There was one 18-year-old victim who was standing on the sidewalk outside of the entrance when he was struck by one round in the lower extremity.  He was transported to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The two victims struck multiple times by gunfire were transported to area hospitals and are listed in stable condition.

The suspects are described as three black males in their late teen’s wearing all dark clothing. The image and video below displays the three suspects involved in the shooting incident.

Delaware State Police Investigating Single Vehicle Fatal Collision

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal single motor vehicle collision that occurred in the Harbeson area last night.

On April 8, 2023, at approximately 9:20 p.m., a 2007 GMC Yukon operated by a 47-year-old male of Milton, DE, was traveling at a high speed eastbound on Lewes-Georgetown Highway (Route 9) approaching a slight right curve just west of Harbeson Road (Route 5). For unknown reasons, the operator failed to maintain control of the vehicle and crossed the center line of the road and into the westbound lane. The GMC continued to travel in an easterly direction as it crossed through the intersection of Harbeson Road. The GMC then exited the north edge of the roadway and continued eastbound, through the front yards of several residences, until the front of the vehicle struck a utility pole. After impact, the vehicle caught fire and was partially engulfed in flames.

The 47-year-old male operator was pronounced deceased at the scene. Identification of the victim is pending notification to the next of kin.

Lewes-Georgetown Highway between Harbeson Road and Hudson Road was closed for approximately 2.5 hours while the crash was investigated, and the roadway was cleared.

Delaware State Police Investigating Shooting at the Christiana Mall

Delaware State Police are investigating a shooting at the Christiana Mall that occurred this evening.

At approximately 6:43 p.m., tonight, the Delaware State Police were dispatched to the Christiana Mall for a reported shooting that occurred at the entrance to the food court. Officers responded and located three victims with gunshot wounds in the vicinity of the food court. The victims were transported to area hospitals for their injuries. All three of the victims have been listed in stable condition. Five other individuals sustained various injuries not related to gunfire during the incident. These subjects were transported to area hospitals for medical treatment.

It has not been confirmed how many suspects were involved at this time. Investigators are actively working to identify the suspects. The incident is determined to be a result of an altercation between several suspects and at least one of the victims. This remains an active and ongoing investigation.

The Christiana Mall has been searched and cleared by police. There is no threat to public safety.

We would like to thank the many officers from numerous agencies including police, fire, and EMS who responded to assist in this coordinated response.
