Teen Apprehended After Chase With a Stolen Car

Early Wednesday morning, the Delaware State Police apprehended a 15-year-old after he led troopers on a pursuit with a stolen car outside of New Castle and Wilmington.

On June 7, 2023, at approximately 1:00 a.m., a trooper on patrol in New Castle observed a red Ford Edge traveling southbound on New Castle Avenue approaching the onramp to northbound Interstate 295. A computer check showed that the car had been reported as stolen by the Newtown Township Police Department in Pennsylvania on May 21, 2023. The trooper attempted to stop the Edge on I-295, but the vehicle fled into New Jersey at a high rate of speed, and the trooper discontinued and stopped following the car.

At approximately 2:18 a.m., another Delaware trooper saw the same Ford Edge on New Castle Avenue near Hillview Avenue in New Castle. Troopers attempted to stop the stolen car but it fled at a high rate of speed on northbound New Castle Avenue towards Wilmington. The Edge turned onto Christiana Avenue and continued eastbound until it struck a chain fence and concrete barrier in front of Intercontinental Services of Delaware, located at 1020 Christiana Avenue. Two black males exited the Edge and ran away on foot, and the 15-year-old driver was found by troopers and assisting police agencies a short time later. The second occupant was not located.

The driver was taken into custody and later taken to an area hospital for injuries sustained in the crash. When he is released from the hospital, he will be charged with the following offenses:

  • Receiving Stolen Property Over $1,500 (Felony)
  • Disregarding a Police Officer Signal (Felony)
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Numerous traffic violations

The second occupant of the stolen Ford Edge has yet to be identified. Investigators are asking for anyone with information regarding his identity to contact Trooper First Class J. Guevara by calling 302-834-2620. Information may also be provided by sending a Private Facebook Message to the Delaware State Police or contacting Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-847-3333.
