State Police Investigating Fatal Crash in Seaford

The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash occurred on Sunday afternoon in Seaford that left one woman dead.

On December 3, 2023, at approximately 4:18 p.m., a 2018 Nissan Versa was traveling northbound in the right lane of Sussex Highway approaching the intersection of Middleford Road. At the same time, a 2014 Honda Odyssey was traveling westbound on Middleford Road, approaching the intersection of Sussex Highway. The Versa failed to stop at the red light and proceeded into the intersection, into the Odyssey’s path of travel. The front of the Versa impacted the left front side of Odyssey within the intersection.

The driver of the Versa, a 74-year-old woman from Seaford, Delaware, was taken to an area hospital by ambulance where she later died. Her name is being withheld until her family and relatives are notified.

The driver of the Odyssey, a 47-year-old woman from Seaford, Delaware, and passengers were taken to an area hospital by ambulance for non-life-threatening injuries.

The roadway was closed for approximately three and a half hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

State Police Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Crash

The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred Sunday evening in Seaford that left one man dead.

On December 3, 2023, at approximately 9:15 p.m., a 2019 maroon Dodge Grand Caravan was stopped on the right shoulder of Sussex Highway, south of Ockles Road. For unknown reasons, the 88-year-old driver of the Dodge exited the van and was in the right southbound lane of Sussex Highway in the path of travel of an approaching 2005 gold Lincoln Town Car. The 88-year-old man was not wearing or carrying any type of reflective clothing and was struck by the Lincoln in the right lane. As a result, the man was thrown onto the roadway and came to rest on the west edge of the grass median.

The driver of the Dodge, a man from Laurel, Delaware, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld until his family and relatives are notified.

The driver of the Lincoln, a 68-year-old man from Delmar, Delaware, was not injured.

The roadway was closed for approximately 3.5 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

State Police Investigating Fatal Crash in Dover

The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash occurred on Friday afternoon in Dover that left one woman dead.

On December 1, 2023, at approximately 3:11 p.m., a 2001 Buick Century was traveling eastbound on Rose Bowl Road. The Buick stopped at the stop sign at North Dupont Highway. At the same time, a 2012 Nissan Sentra was traveling southbound in the left lane of North Dupont Highway, approaching Rose Bowl Road. The Buick moved from the stop sign attempting to cross the southbound lanes of North Dupont Highway, in front of the Nissan, resulting in the Nissan striking the Buick’s driver side door in the left lane of North Dupont Highway.

The driver of the Buick, a 59-year-old woman from Hartly, Delaware, was taken to an area hospital by ambulance, where she died. Her name is being withheld until her family and relatives are notified.

The driver of the Nissan, a 21-year-old woman from Smyrna, Delaware, was taken to an area hospital by ambulance for non-life-threatening injuries.

The roadway was closed for approximately two and a half hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

* Update * – State Police Detectives Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting

In a coordinated effort with allied law enforcement agencies, Delaware State Police located Brian Holben, the attempted murder suspect involved in the officer-involved shooting, on Tuesday. The culmination of investigative efforts led to the execution of a search warrant on Thursday afternoon, resulting in the discovery of Holben’s deceased body in Maryland.

On Thursday, November 30, 2023, at approximately 4:00 p.m., Maryland State Police, in collaboration with the U.S. Marshal’s Task Force, assisted Delaware State Police detectives by serving a search warrant for Holben. The operation aimed to apprehend Holben, who had fired a gun at Delaware State Police detectives on November 28, 2023. Through investigative means, detectives learned of Holben’s location inside a camper, situated on a property at the 13000 block of Holly Road, Greensboro, Maryland.

During the execution of the search warrant, it was confirmed that Holben was inside the camper. Despite attempts to get him to surrender, Holben barricaded himself inside. Subsequent efforts to negotiate his surrender were unsuccessful. When police entered the camper, they discovered Holben with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

State Police Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Crash in Townsend

The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred Wednesday evening in Townsend that left one woman dead.

On November 29, 2023, at approximately 5:33 p.m., a white 2005 Mitsubishi Galant was traveling in the left southbound lane of Dupont Parkway approaching the intersection with Main Drive. For unknown reasons, a pedestrian wearing dark clothing was in the southbound lanes of Dupont Parkway near Main Drive. The area is dark and does not have street lighting. As a result, the pedestrian was struck by the Mitsubishi and came to rest in the left southbound lane of Dupont Parkway. The pedestrian was then struck by a gray 2019 Toyota Tacoma and a blue 2012 Mazda CX-9 that were traveling in the left southbound lane of Dupont Parkway shortly behind the Mitsubishi.

The pedestrian, a 21-year-old woman from Townsend, Delaware, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name is being withheld until her family and relatives are notified.

The driver of the Mitsubishi, a 39-year-old Dover woman, the driver of the Toyota, a 49-year-old Townsend man, and the driver of the Mazda, a 51-year-old Smyrna woman, were not injured.

The roadway was closed for approximately 5 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

State Police Detectives Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting

The Delaware State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Greenwood last night.

On November 28, 2023, at approximately 9:27 p.m., members of the Kent County Governor’s Task Force and Probation and Parole located 27-year-old Brian Holben of Greenwood, Delaware, operating a Jeep Cherokee in the parking lot of 4937 Hickman Road in Greenwood. Holben is a known fugitive with multiple warrants for his arrest. After detectives initiated a traffic stop on the Jeep, Holben attempted to flee by using his Jeep to push two State Police vehicles out of the way. Detectives then attempted to remove Holben from the Jeep, but he pointed a handgun at a detective and fired. Detectives returned fire at Holben before he fled on foot into a wooded area and, at this time, he has not been located. No one was injured as a result of this incident.

The investigation is still active and attempts to locate Holben are ongoing.  If you come across Holben, please stay away from him, as he is considered to be armed and dangerous. We urge the public to call 9-1-1 immediately if he is located. Holben is wanted for the following crimes.

  • Attempted Murder 1st (Felony)
  • Reckless Endangering 1st (Felony) – 2 counts
  • Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony (Felony)
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited (Felony)

As per Delaware State Police standard operating procedures, the troopers who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave. An investigation will be conducted regarding the use of force.
