Electronic Speed Safety Program to Begin in I-95 at Route 896 Construction Zone

The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT), in partnership with the Delaware State Police, announces that starting Monday, July 8, 2024, the Electronic Speed Safety Program (ESSP) will be active in the I-95/Route 896 construction zone in Newark and will continue until the end of the project. State Police Investigating Fatal Motorcycle Crash in Wilmington

The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred last night in Wilmington that left one man dead.

On June 17, 2024, at approximately 9:04 p.m., a silver 2010 Toyota Yaris was traveling in the left lane of East Newport Pike eastbound passing the intersection with Curtis Avenue. At the same time, a 2003 Kawasaki motorcycle was also traveling in the left lane of East Newport Pike eastbound, approaching the rear of the Toyota. The preliminary investigation revealed the front of the Kawasaki struck the rear of the Toyota at an apparent high rate of speed, causing the motorcyclist and his passenger to be ejected.

The passenger of the Kawasaki, a 32-year-old man from Wilmington, Delaware, was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name is being withheld until his family and relatives are notified. The motorcyclist, a 28-year-old man from Wilmington, Delaware, was taken to an area hospital for critical injuries.

The driver of the Toyota, a 19-year-old woman from Wilmington, Delaware, was taken to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The roadway was closed for approximately 4 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

State Police Detectives Investigating Armed Robbery in Dover

The Delaware State Police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred last night in Dover.

On June 17, 2024, at approximately 9:42 p.m., troopers responded to an armed robbery on South State Street near Cool Springs Drive in Dover. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 16-year-old victim was riding his bike on South State Street when he was approached by a black male suspect. The suspect pushed the victim off his bike, pointed a gun at him, and took his property. The suspect fled the area in an unknown vehicle. The victim was not hurt during the incident.

State Police Investigating Road Rage Incident on State Route 1

Delaware State Police are investigating a road rage incident that occurred Saturday night in the Smyrna area.

On June 15, 2024, at approximately 10:21 p.m., a 30-year-old woman from Chester, Pennsylvania, was traveling northbound on State Route 1 (Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway) in the right lane with her 2-year-old child in the rear passenger seat. A white SUV began drifting into her lane. In an attempt to avoid a collision, the victim honked her horn and continued driving. The unknown driver of the SUV responded aggressively by tailgating her, paralleling her vehicle, flashing high beams, and shouting obscenities from the window.

As the vehicles continued northbound, the suspect briefly pulled onto the right shoulder, allowing the victim to pass. The suspect then re-entered the right lane and fired shots at her vehicle before fleeing the scene near Exit 119. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, but several bullets hit the vehicle.

The suspect vehicle is described as a white SUV, possibly a GMC Yukon.

State Police Investigate Robbery at Newark Royal Farms

Delaware State Police are actively investigating an early morning robbery that took place on Sunday at Royal Farms, located at 2808 Pulaski Highway in Newark.

On June 16, 2024, at approximately 3:08 a.m., two employees were in the back office when they noticed the store’s camera system had stopped working. Shortly after, one of the employees heard someone enter the store and observed the individual standing at one of the registers as they exited the back office. The unidentified suspect then displayed a firearm and demanded money. As the second employee appeared from the back office, they saw the suspect pointing the gun at the first employee. Following the suspect’s orders, the second employee got on the ground. The first employee then handed over an undisclosed amount of cash to the suspect, who subsequently fled the scene. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident.

The suspect is described as a black male wearing a face mask. Video surveillance footage is unavailable at this time.

State Police Investigate Robbery at Wilmington Food Lion

Delaware State Police are actively investigating a robbery that occurred last night at Food Lion, located at 4401 Governor Printz Boulevard in Wilmington.

On June 16, 2024, at approximately 8:07 p.m., an unidentified suspect, dressed in a black robe that concealed their body, entered the store. During the incident, an employee was transferring money from the cash registers to the safe. While the safe was open, the suspect approached the employee, sprayed them with pepper spray, and took an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene on foot. The employee was transported to a nearby hospital and released without any lasting injuries. Video surveillance footage is currently unavailable.

Delaware State Police are asking for witnesses to a shooting that occurred last night in Dover.

On June 16, 2024, at approximately 11:20 p.m., troopers responded to a shooting on Palmer Road in Dover. When troopers arrived, they found a 36-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound and gave medical aid. The victim was transported to an area hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the thigh. The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was walking on Palmer Road when an unknown suspect shot him from an unknown location.

State Police Investigating New Castle Motel Shooting

Delaware State Police are investigating a shooting that occurred early Sunday morning at Red Roof Inn & Suites in New Castle.

On June 16, 2024, at approximately 3:33 a.m., troopers responded to a shooting at Red Roof Inn & Suites, located at 1612 N. Dupont Highway. When troopers arrived on the scene, they learned that a 20-year-old male victim had been transported to a local hospital for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the arm.

A preliminary investigation revealed that several individuals gathered at the motel after attending a local concert. During this gathering, the victim and unknown suspect engaged in an argument. The altercation escalated, and the suspect fired a shot at the victim before fleeing the scene.

On June 15, 2024, at approximately 12:31 p.m., troopers responded to a late-reported shooting at Sweet Daddy’s Bar and Grill, located at 3806 Governor Printz Boulevard. A preliminary investigation reveals that around 1:30 a.m. that same day, gunfire was exchanged between unidentified individuals in the parking lot, resulting in damage to an unoccupied vehicle. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported from the incident.
