“Operation Braking Point,” a zero-tolerance, high-visibility traffic safety and enforcement campaign, began January 9, 2023, and continued through to January 23, 2023. The Delaware State Police will again be partnering with the Office of Highway Safety and the Delaware Department of Transportation as we launch “Operation Braking Point 2.0” to further reduce serious and fatal collisions on our major roadways, including Interstate 95 and 495, US Routes 13 and 113, and State Route 1.

Operation Braking Point 2.0 will continue to focus on speeding, which is a significant contributing factor in fatal car crashes. Patrols will be conducted with a zero-tolerance approach throughout all hours of the day from June 9, 2023, through June 17, 2023. DelDOT electronic signs and boards will be reminding drivers to slow down or be ticketed.

We encourage all drivers to slow down, stay focused on the road, and buckle their seatbelts, so everyone can arrive alive this summer season.

The Delaware State Police partnered with the Office of Highway Safety (OHS) and DELDOT for Winter Distracted Driving/Occupant Distraction enforcement.  This campaign targeted distracted drivers and seatbelt violations statewide from January 15, 2023- February 13, 2023.  These additional Patrols resulted in 541 Traffic Contacts (435 tickets and 98 Warnings) and 8 criminal arrests.  Included with these statistics were 82 Distracted Driving (Cell Phone) contacts, 120 Speeding Violations, 52 Seatbelt Violations, 2 Child Restraint Violations, 2 DUI’s and a Passing Stopped School Bus charge.

The Delaware State Police and Delaware OHS recognize that distracted driving caused by the use of personal electronic devices is a very dangerous behavior that continues to make our roadways less safe.  Distracted driving is an ever-growing problem, and the hope is that through enforcement initiatives along with educational opportunities, we can send the message that texting/talking while driving is not only illegal but can be deadly.

The Delaware State Police will continue partnering with the Office of Highway Safety for additional campaigns outside their normal daily patrols.  Currently, additional Speed and DUI enforcement are in progress through the month of March.  We again remind motorists to Slow Down, Fasten Seatbelts, Use Hands-Free Devices, and Do Not Drive Impaired.
