State Police Apprehend Repeat DUI Offender in Wrong-Way Crash with Two Police Vehicles

Delaware State Police arrested 55-year-old William Geissel Jr. of Camden, Delaware, for third-offense DUI and other traffic-related charges after crashing into two police vehicles last night.

On May 2, 2024, at approximately 8:45 p.m., a Dover Police Department Tahoe was traveling southbound in the left lane on South Dupont Highway, with a Delaware State Police Tahoe following behind. A Volkswagen, operated by Geissel, was traveling northbound in the left southbound lane of South Dupont Highway, approaching the police vehicles. The Dover PD Tahoe swerved to avoid the crash, but the Volkswagen crashed into its rear fender and then into the right side of the Delaware State Police Tahoe.

Upon arrival, other responding troopers contacted Geissel and detected signs of impairment. Standardized Field Sobriety Tests were conducted, leading to his arrest. Further investigation revealed Geissel had two prior DUI convictions. He was subsequently transported to Troop 3, arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 7, charged with the offenses listed below, and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on a $4101 secured bond.

  • Vehicular Assault 2nd Degree (2 counts)
  • Traffic Offenses

Geissel was uninjured during the crash. Both officers who were on duty during this incident were transported to a local hospital, where they were treated for injuries sustained during the crash and later discharged. South Dupont Highway was closed for approximately three hours while investigators examined the scene and cleared the roadway.
