*Update – Third Suspect in Custody* Homicide Unit Investigating Shooting in Laurel

The Delaware State Police have identified 21-year-old Shyheem Latham-Purnell of Laurel, Delaware as a third suspect who was involved in the April homicide of 18-year-old Corey Mumford in Laurel. Latham-Purnell was taken into custody earlier today in Maryland.

On April 14, 2023, at approximately 2:40 p.m., the Laurel Police Department responded to a shooting near the 100 block of Sunset Drive in Wexford Village Apartments. When officers arrived, they located Corey Mumford suffering from multiple gunshot wounds behind one of the apartment buildings. The officers began CPR and attempted life-saving measures until EMS arrived on scene. Corey was then taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. Due to the nature of the case, the Laurel Police Department requested that the Delaware State Police Homicide Unit assume the investigation.

On April 21, 2023, suspect Jhalir Henry was arrested in Maryland for the murder of Corey Mumford.

On May 18, 2023, suspect Donregus Holland was arrested in Maryland for the murder of Corey Mumford.

Detectives developed Shyheem Latham-Purnell as a third suspect involved in Corey’s homicide. On June 12, 2023, members of the Maryland Marshals Task Force located Latham-Purnell at a residence in Salisbury, Maryland, and he was taken into custody without incident. Latham-Purnell is now incarcerated in Maryland and will be extradited to Delaware, where he will be charged with Murder First Degree, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited, and Conspiracy First Degree.
