Troopers Arrest Subject for Impersonating a Police Officer and Weapon Charges

The Delaware State Police have arrested 29-year-old Kevin Hawker of New Castle, DE after he impersonated a police officer and attempted to conduct motor vehicle stops in the New Castle area.

On March 28, 2023, at approximately 1:35 p.m., troopers were dispatched to the area of southbound Route 1 in the area of Route 273 for a report of a 2020 Hyundai Elantra with Delaware temporary registration utilizing red and blue emergency lights and attempting to pull vehicles over. A short time later at approximately 1:51 p.m., it was reported the same vehicle pulled a motorist over on northbound School Bell Road near Bear Christina Road. The motorist quickly realized the subject in the Elantra was not a lawful police officer, so she drove off and contacted 911.

Troopers responded to the area and located the suspect vehicle on School Bell Road at the intersection with Pulaski Highway. With the assistance of the New Castle County Police Department, a traffic stop was initiated, and the operator identified as Kevin Hawker was taken into custody.  A subsequent search of his vehicle led to the discovery of a loaded Taurus .22 caliber handgun.

Hawker was transported back to Troop 2 where he was charged with the following crimes:

  • Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony (Felony)
  • Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon a Firearm (Felony)
  • Criminal Impersonation of a Police Officer (Felony) – 2 Counts
  • Driving Without a Valid License
  • Failure to Have Proof of Insurance

Hawker was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court #11 and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on a $24,700 secured bond.
