Traffic Stop Leads to Drug and Weapon Arrest

Delaware State Police arrested 20-year-old Tyler Shabazz of Magnolia, DE on drug and weapon charges following a traffic stop on Tuesday evening.

On March 29th, 2022, at approximately 6:00 p.m., members of the Delaware State Police Kent County Governor’s Task Force were on patrol in the area of S. Dupont Highway and Webbs Lane, Dover. During this time, a trooper observed a black Hyundai Elantra traveling northbound on S. Dupont Highway make a lane change without properly signaling. A traffic stop was initiated, and upon contact with the operator and sole occupant, identified as Tyler Shabazz, the trooper detected an odor of marijuana emitting from inside of the vehicle. Shabazz was detained without incident and a probable cause search was conducted. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of approximately 440 grams of marijuana, a loaded Taurus 9mm handgun, four magazines, numerous rounds of 9mm ammunition, a digital scale, and over $250 in suspected drug proceeds.

Shabazz was transported to Troop 3 and charged with the following crimes:

  • Possession With Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance (Felony)
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance in a Tier 1 Quantity (Felony)
  • Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon (Felony)
  • Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony (Felony)
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
  • Failure to Signal

Shabazz was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court # 2 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $27,001 secured bond.
