Delaware State Police Arrest Newark Man for a Hate Crime- Newark

Newark- Delaware State Police have charged 57-year-old Gary Sweetman of Newark, DE with a hate crime and related charges after yelling racial slurs at two acquaintances.

The incident occurred on August 5, 2021, at approximately 4:19 p.m., when troopers responded to the 800 block of New London Road, Newark, DE, in reference to a disorderly subject. The investigation determined Sweetman yelled racial slurs and obscenities at a male and female victim who were in the front yard of their residence. Sweetman was charged with harassment after a similar incident the day prior.

Sweetman was taken into custody without incident and transported back to Troop 6 where he was charged with the following crimes:

  • Hate Crime (Felony) – 2 counts
  • Harassment – 2 counts

Sweetman was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court #2 and released on $3,000 unsecured bond.
