Delaware State Police Arrest Townsend Man for Aggravated Menacing and Weapons Charges – Townsend

Date Posted: Monday, April 26th, 2021

Townsend- The Delaware State Police have charged 54-year-old Robert Hegwood of Townsend, DE, with Aggravated Menacing and weapons charges after he pointed a gun at two victims Saturday night.

The incident occurred on April 24, 2021, at approximately 7:14 p.m., when troopers responded to a residence on Grears Corner Road, Townsend, DE, in reference complaint involving a weapon. The investigation determined Hegwood had a verbal argument with a neighbor, a 27-year-old male of Townsend. The argument escalated and two acquaintances of the male attempted to diffuse the situation. During this time, Hegwood went inside of his residence and retrieved a shotgun. While the two acquaintances attempted to diffuse the situation and escort the 27-year-old male away, Hegwood pointed the shotgun at each of the victims (a 49-year-old female and 38-year-old female of Townsend) and made threats to harm them. No one was injured as a result of the incident.

Troopers responded to the Hegwood’s residence and took him into custody without incident. The shotgun was also recovered inside the home.

Hegwood was transported back to Troop 9 where he was charged with the following:

  • Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony (Felony)
  • Possession of a Firearm by Person Prohibited (Felony)
  • Aggravated Menacing (Felony) – 2 counts

Hegwood was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on 40,000 secured bond.
