Newark– The Delaware State Police have arrested a 16-year-old female of Newark, for robbery and related charges following a carjacking that took place in the parking lot of Wawa on Sunday evening.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:57 p.m., April 18, 2021, in the parking lot of Wawa, located at 1750 Capitol Trail, Newark. The 22-year-old male victim parked and left his unlocked black 2018 Volkswagen Jetta unattended as he entered Wawa to make a purchase. Upon returning to his car, there was a suspect hidden in the rear seat. The suspect displayed a handgun at the victim and instructed him to drive. The victim complied and drove to the area of Route 2 and Creekside Drive where he was ordered out of the vehicle. The suspect then occupied the driver seat and fled in the stolen vehicle on E. Green Valley Circle. The victim was not injured as a result of the incident.

On April 19, 2021, at approximately 3:03 p.m., the victim returned to the Wawa located at 1750 Capitol Trail, Newark, and observed the suspect who stole his vehicle in the parking lot. The victim immediately contacted the police. Troopers responded to the location and took the female suspect into custody without incident. Upon taking the suspect into custody, troopers discovered the victim’s stolen car key and credit card in her possession.

The juvenile female suspect was transported back to Troop 2 where she was charged with the following crimes:

  • Robbery 1st Degree (Felony)
  • Wearing a Disguise During the Commission of a Felony (Felony)
  • Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony (Felony)
  • Possession of a Firearm by Prohibited Juvenile (Felony)
  • Kidnapping 2nd Degree (Felony)

The juvenile female suspect was arraigned in the Justice of the Peace Court #11 and committed to the New Castle County Detention Center on $77,000 secured bond.

The stolen vehicle was later recovered in the area of the suspect’s residence.
