Dover- The Delaware State Police arrested 54-year-old Mary Williams (no photograph available) for 4th Offense DUI after she was involved in a vehicle pursuit and crashed.
The incident occurred on March 19, 2021, at approximately 12:01 a.m., when a trooper on routine patrol observed a green Chrysler Sebring traveling southbound South Dupont Highway in the area of Voshells Mill Road without a registration plate. The trooper initiated a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled southbound on S. Dupont Highway. The vehicle made a U-turn and traveled back northbound on S.Dupont Highway with it headlights turned off and at a high rate of speed. The suspect vehicle then turned onto to Walnut Shade Road where it failed to negotiate a curve and struck a tree. The sole operator, later identified as Mary Williams, exited the vehicle and attempted to hide from troopers, but was taken into custody without incident. Williams was not injured as a result of the crash.
Upon troopers taking Williams into custody, an odor of alcohol was detected, and a DUI investigation ensued. A computer inquiry revealed that Williams had been charged with three previous DUIs making this her 4th offense.
Williams was transported back to Troop 3 where she was charged with the following:
- 4th Offense Driving a Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol (Felony)
- Disregarding a Police Officer’s Signal (Felony)
- Numerous Traffic Violations
Williams was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court #7 and committed to the Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution on $8,755.00 secured bond.
