Troopers Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Crash – Newark

Newark – The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian that occurred at approximately 8:52 p.m., Tuesday, December 10, 2019 on DE Rt. 273 (Christiana Rd.) in the area of Harmony Rd., Newark.

The initial investigation has determined that a 2018 Mazda 3, operated by a 21 year old Bear man, was traveling westbound on Rt. 273 west of the intersection with Harmony Rd. in the left lane. A 31 year old Newark woman was crossing the westbound lanes of Rt. 273 from north to south on foot and proceeded directly into the path of the Mazda at which time she was struck. After impact the pedestrian was thrown into the eastbound lanes of Rt. 273 where she came to rest. The Mazda came to a stop and remained at the scene.

The female was transported to the Christiana Hospital where she was pronounced deceased. The investigation determined that at the time of the incident she was wearing dark clothing with no reflective material, not carrying a light and not utilizing a marked crosswalk. Impairment on her behalf is undetermined at this time. Identification is pending notification of next of kin.

A 31 year old male subject who was crossing the roadway along with the female victim was not injured.

The driver of the Mazda who was properly restrained, was not injured. Impairment on his behalf is not a factor in the crash.

Rt. 273 was closed between Harmony Rd. and Brownleaf Rd. for approximately 3 hours, while the scene was investigated.
