Wilmington Man Arrested on Drug and Weapons Charges – New Castle

New Castle– The Delaware State Police Governor’s Task Force with the assistance of officers from Probation and Patrol have arrested 27-year-old, Rashaad Benson, of Wilmington, on drug and numerous weapons charges.

The investigation revealed that at approximately 12:15 a.m., Wednesday, September 18, 2019 the Delaware State Police Governor’s Task Force (GTF), which is comprised of Troopers and Probation and Parole Officers, were conducting proactive patrols in the area of Churchman’s Road and Route 7, to target criminal activity and ongoing quality of life issues in that area. GTF members observed a gold Lincoln Towncar, which was being operated by  Benson, who they knew was wanted on a capias, issued out of the New Castle County Court of Common Pleas.

Benson drove to the Royal Farms located at 457 Stanton Christiana Road, where officers were able to take him in to custody without incident. During a search of Benson, a loaded handgun was found to be concealed in his waistband. A subsequent computer search revealed that the weapon was reported stolen out of the City of Wilmington on July 14, 2019. During a search of Benson’s vehicle, approximately four grams of crack cocaine was recovered.

Benson was transported to Troop 2 and charged with the following:

  • Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon (Firearm)
  • Possession of a Firearm by Person Prohibited
  • Possession of Ammunition by Person Prohibited
  • Receiving a Stolen Firearm
  • Possession of a Firearm While in Possession of Narcotics
  • Possession of Cocaine

 

Benson was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on a cash bail of $34,500.00.
