Bicyclist Critically Injured in Coastal Highway Crash – South Bethany

South Bethany – The South Bethany Police Department with assistance from the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a crash involving a bicyclist that took occurred Thursday night on Coastal Highway.

The initial investigation has determined that at approximately 10:16 p.m., Thursday, July 4, 2019, a 2005 Toyota Sienna, operated by a 50 year old Red Lion, PA man, was travelling southbound on Coastal Highway in the left lane, approaching Evergreen Rd. A bicycle, operated by a 27 year old Annapolis, MD woman was travelling westbound across the median of Coastal Hwy., and proceeded into the southbound lanes, directly into the path of the Toyota. The front end of the Toyota struck the cyclist on the right side, knocking her to the pavement. After impact the Toyota came to an immediate stop and remained at the scene.

The cyclist was initially transported to Beebe Hospital before being transferred to the Christian Hospital where she remains in critical condition. It was determined that she was not wearing a helmet and had no functioning lights on the bicycle. Impairment on her behalf is undetermined at this time.

The driver of the Toyota was uninjured. Impairment on his behalf is not deemed as a factor in the collision.
