Traffic Stop Leads to Recovery of Stolen Handgun – Smyrna

Date Posted: Sunday, June 16th, 2019

Smyrna – The Delaware State Police have charged 33 year old Antonio F. Williams, of Philadelphia, PA, with multiple weapons offenses after he was stopped for aggressive driving and then found to be in possession of a stolen handgun.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:50 p.m., Saturday, June 15, 2019, on SR 1 northbound in the area of Exit 119 in Smyrna, when a Trooper on routine patrol, observed a Pontiac Grand Prix with PA tags, driving in an aggressive manor. The Pontiac was determined to have been traveling at speeds topping out at 90 M.P.H., changing lanes erratically and tailgating other vehicles, prior to being stopped by the Trooper.

The Trooper was able to stop the vehicle without incident and then made contact with Williams, who was determined to be the driver and sole occupant. During a consent search of the vehicle, the Trooper recovered a loaded, Taurus 357 handgun, which was concealed under the carpeting of the driver’s floorboard.

Further investigation determined that the handgun had been stolen during a burglary in Upper Darby, PA. It was also confirmed that Williams was a person prohibited to possess a firearm due to a prior felony conviction in PA.

Williams was taken into custody without incident and then transported to Troop 9 where he was charged with the following:

  • Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Felony
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited
  • Possession of Ammunition by a Person Prohibited
  • Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon
  • Receiving a Stolen Firearm
  • Aggressive Driving
  • Speeding
  • Improper Lane Change
  • Failure to Signal
  • Following Too Closely

Williams was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court #11 and released on a $28,700.00 bond.
