Date Posted: Friday, May 24th, 2019

Newark – The Delaware State Police have charged 46 year old John R. Lyons of Newark, with felony assault and weapons charges stemming from a fight at an area hotel that occurred early Friday morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:00 a.m., Friday, May 24, 2019 at the Extended Stay America hotel, located at 333 Continental Dr., Newark, when Lyons became involved in a verbal altercation with a 38 year male subject who was staying in an adjacent room at the hotel. After the initial altercation, the two men separated, but a short time later, Lyons again confronted the victim in the parking lot of the hotel. The altercation turned physical and during the course of the fight Lyons struck the victim in the upper torso with a hammer. After being struck the victim was able to take possession of the hammer at which time Lyons fled back to his room.

Responding Troopers located Lyons in his room where he was taken in to custody without incident. The immediate investigation produced physical evidence, to include the hammer that further linked Lyons to the crime.

Lyons was transported to Troop 6 where he was charged with one count each of Assault 2nd Degree and Possession of a Deadly Weapon during the Commission of a Felony. He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court #11 and then committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $12,500.00 secured bail.
