Troopers Identify Suspects in Connection with Multiple Burglaries

Kent County- The Delaware State Police have arrested one suspect and another is awaiting extradition in connection with multiple burglaries to chicken farms in southern Kent County.

Beginning in February and continuing through April, 2019, the Troop 3 Property Crimes Unit began investigating numerous burglaries to chicken farms in the southern Kent County area. It was determined that unknown suspect(s) were gaining access to chicken farms and removing tools, hunting equipment, and firearms. Through investigative measures, Troopers identified two suspects, 33-year-old Clifton McKinney of Greenwood, DE and 37-year-old Jarel Schaefer of Denton, MD.  It was discovered that the two had pawned numerous stolen items at local pawn shops.

Arrest warrants were obtained for both McKinney and Schaefer for the following charges:

  • Burglary 3rd (5 counts)
  • Possession of Burglary Tools
  • Theft of a Firearm (5 counts)
  • Theft-Felony (3 counts)
  • Theft (2 counts)
  • Falsifying Business Records
  • Theft by False Pretense
  • Selling Stolen Property
  • Criminal Mischief

McKinney was taken into custody without incident at a residence in the 2400 block of Hickman Road and transported back to Troop 3.  He was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court and received a $19,500.00 unsecured bond, however was committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution in reference to having warrants out of Maryland.

With the assistance of the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office, Jarel Schaefer was taken into custody in Denton, Maryland. A search warrant was executed on both his camper and his vehicle resulting in the recovery of stolen property. Additional stolen property was recovered from the local pawn shops.  Schaefer is currently being held at the Caroline County Detention Center, MD awaiting his extradition back to Delaware.
