Troopers Investigating Fatal Crash – North Wilmington

Wilmington – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash that occurred at approximately 1:02 p.m., Saturday, January 12, 2019 on Silverside Rd. at the entrance to the Talleyville Shopping Center.

The initial investigation has determined that a 2011 Nissan Altima, operated by a 21 year old Wilmington man was traveling westbound in the right lane of Silverside Rd., approaching the intersection with the Talleyville Shopping Center entrance. A 2017 Nissan Altima, operated by a 75 year old Claymont man, was traveling eastbound Silverside Rd., in the left turn lane and turned directly into the path of the 2011 Nissan. The driver of the 2011 was unable to avoid the 2017, with the front end of his vehicle striking the right side of the 2017.

The 2011 continued in a westerly direction, coming to a stop in the westbound lanes. The 2017 spun clockwise and traveled in a northwest direction before coming to a stop in the northwest corner of the intersection.

After impact the engine compartment of the 2011 briefly caught fire but was extinguished and did not cause any injuries to the occupants.

The 75 year old victim who was wearing a seatbelt, was transported to the Christiana Hospital by Delaware State Police helicopter where he succumbed to his injuries. Impairment on his behalf is undetermined at this time.

The 21 year old driver and an 18 year old female passenger, who were both seat belted were transported to the Wilmington Hospital with serious injuries. Impairment on his behalf is not being considered a factor in the collision.

Silverside Rd. was closed for approximately 2.5 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
