*TRAFFIC ADVISORY UPDATE* Troopers Investigating Crash Involving School Bus-New Castle

New Castle – Delaware State Police are investigating a crash involving a loaded school bus which sent eight elementary school children to the hospital.

The crash occurred at approximately 8:06 a.m. on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at the intersection of New Castle Avenue (DE Rt. 9) and Memorial Drive, when a 2008 Porsche Cayenne operated by Michael McHugh, 51, of Ocean City New Jersey attempted to turn left from New Castle Ave. northbound on to Memorial Drive westbound. McHugh turned directly into the path of a 2017 Freightliner school bus, operated by a 24 year old New Castle man, which was travelling southbound on New Castle Ave., proceeding through the intersection with Memorial Dr., with the right of way. The front end of the Porsche struck the front end of the school bus with both vehicles becoming disabled in the southbound lanes of New Castle Ave. New Castle Ave. southbound lanes were shut down for approximately two hours.

The school bus was transporting 17 elementary school students to New Castle Elementary School of the Colonial School District. As a result of the crash, 8 of those students were transported to A.I DuPont Hospital For Children, where they were all treated for minor injuries and released.

McHugh was transported to Christiana Hospital where he was also treated for minor injuries.

McHugh was cited for Vehicle Turning Left Must Yield To Oncoming Traffic and having Expired Tags.
