Newark- The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred this afternoon.
The investigation thus far has determined that the crash occurred at approximately 3:50 p.m. today, Saturday, June 24, 2017, as a 38 year old Middletown man was operating a 1994 Honda Accord and was traveling in an eastbound direction on Old Baltimore Pike, preparing to make a left hand turn onto Albe Drive. As the Honda attempted to make the turn on a solid green traffic signal, it entered into the path of a 2008 Kawasaki ZOE motorcycle, which was being operated by a 24 year old Newark man, and which was traveling in a westbound direction on Old Baltimore Pike, also on a solid green traffic signal. The front of the motorcycle then struck the rear right side of the Honda. After the impact, the Honda spun and came to rest on Albe Drive. The male operator of the motorcycle, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, was ejected from the vehicle and landed in the intersection. The motorcycle continued traveling in a westerly direction before coming to rest on Old Baltimore Pike. It then became engulfed in flames.
The operator of the motorcycle was declared dead at the scene. It is unknown if alcohol or drug use on the part of the victim was a factor in the crash. Excessive speed on the part of the victim is being considered as a factor.
The operator of the Honda was treated at the scene by New Castle County Paramedics. He was then transported by ambulance to the Christiana Hospital where he was treated for his non-life threatening injuries. Alcohol use on the part of the operator is being considered as a factor.
Old Baltimore Pike was closed in both directions and Albe Drive was partially closed for approximately 3.5 hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
This crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police. No charges have been filed at this time.
