Pedestrian Crash Injures Man

Released Thursday, July 03, 2008

Rehoboth Beach – The Delaware State Police are investigating an early morning crash that injured a Pennsylvania man. Troopers responded to the crash at approximately 12:10 am this morning after it was reported a vehicle struck a pedestrian on SR 1 in the area of Hebron road.

The investigation revealed a 2002 Toyota SR 5, operated by David Sturgis – 47 of Lewes, was traveling northbound in the right-hand lane of USRT 1 after coming from the merge lane of Rehoboth Avenue Extended. A second vehicle was in front of the Toyota when it made a sudden lane change to avoid a person in the roadway.

After the sudden lane change, the operator of the Toyota observed the pedestrian walking eastbound on the roadway and entered his lane of travel. The Toyota struck the pedestrian, who was identified as Joseph Steward, 60 of Ridley Park, PA. As a result of the crash, Mr. Steward was flown by DSP helicopter to Christiana Hospital where he was treated for lacerations to the head and a shoulder injury. His injuries are not life threatening.

Mr. Sturgis was wearing a seatbelt and alcohol is not a factor on his behalf. The pedestrian was not carrying a flashlight and there was no crosswalk where the crash occurred. Alcohol use on behalf of Mr. Steward is unknown at this time. The crash remains under investigation.
