State of Delaware
– Today the Delaware State Police remember two of their Fallen
Heroes, Trooper Ronald L. Carey and Trooper David C. Yarrington.
These courageous troopers, while protecting and serving the
citizens of Delaware, were shot and killed in Pennsylvania on
January 5, 1972.
The troopers were
investigating an armed robbery when they noticed a suspicious
vehicle at a nearby hotel just over the state line. When they
began to investigate the vehicle, they became engaged in a
struggle with a male suspect. During the struggle a second
suspect, a female accomplice, shot both troopers.
The two suspects then fled and the male was later shot and
killed by Maryland State Troopers. The female was arrested and
returned to Pennsylvania and is currently serving life in
prison.
Trooper Carey died
on January 5, 1972 as a result of the gunshot wound. He was 29
years old and had served with the Delaware State Police for two
and a half years. He is survived by his wife and three children.
Trooper Yarrington
died on January 6, 1972 as a result of the gunshot wound. He
was 24 years old and had served with the Delaware State Police
for 3 years.
The Delaware State
Police honor these brave men for their ultimate sacrifice in
protecting the Citizens of Delaware.
