Update on Dover Home Invasion – Crime Scene Examination Yields Fingerprint Left at Scene Identifies Suspect

Released Thursday, October 23, 2008

Dover – The Delaware State Police have obtained arrest warrants for Mykel Beckels, 18 of the 200 block of Royal Grant Way, Dover for numerous charges related to the Home Invasion Robbery that occurred earlier today.

Investigators examining the crime scene were able to successfully lift a latent fingerprint from the rear sliding glass door of the home. They immediately sent it to the forensic latent examiner at the State Bureau of Identification          for a comparison. The examiner was able to get a match providing the identity as Mr. Beckels who lives just a few blocks away from the 74 year old victims. The victims have informed police they do not know Mr. Beckels and there should be no reason why his prints were on the sliding glass door.

Detectives are providing additional information surrounding the robbery. They have learned the suspect entered the home unlawfully and was found standing inside the kitchen by a 74 year old female resident. The female observed the suspect armed with a black handgun and wearing a disguise over his face. She yelled for her 74 year old husband who responded to see what was happening.

As the elderly man came to assist his wife, the suspect struck him in the head with the handgun causing him to fall to the ground and lose consciousness. As this was occurring, the female called 911 and was talking with the police dispatchers when the suspect approached her and removed the telephone. The suspect then pointed the weapon at the woman and demanded money from her. He was able to remove a small amount of money from her purse before he fled the home.

As a result of the assault, the male victim was flown to Christiana Hospital by DSP helicopter and is currently in stable condition. He sustained multiple lacerations and contusions to his head. The female was not injured.

Police have been aggressively searching for Mr. Beckels and cannot locate him. The Delaware State Police currently have arrest warrants on file for Robbery 1st Degree, Assault 1st Degree, Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony, Burglary 2nd Degree, Aggravated Menacing, Wearing a Disguise During the Commission of Felony, Theft, Malicious Interference with a 911 Call and Criminal Mischief.
